[Old] Sedunnic Armed Forces - Qwert - 10-17-2015 SEDUNNIC ARMED FORCES
Post information: This is a description of the Sedunnic Armed Forces, or Rammstovd in Sedunnic. Feel free to comment. This is a work in progress, the post will be updated continuously. Please see the new thread here http://tspforums.xyz/thread-6884-post-182456.html#pid182456 The Sedunnic Armed Forces (Sedunnic: Rammstovd, lit. "the War Authority") is a government agency that forms the military forces of Sedunn, responsible for its defence as well as promoting the nation's wider interests abroad. Historically, they have been involved in armed conflicts with other nations, and peacekeeping efforts, most recently the Great War and the Second Transsunerian Civil War respectively (see History and Current deployment). Operational decisions are made by the Armed Forces Command (Sedunnic: Rammseoverr), headed by Supreme Commander General Maks Fejellienn, answering to the policy of the Government of Sedunn. Employing both conscription and voluntary service, the Sedunnic Armed Forces dispose of a total force of about 195,340 troops, 15 brigades, 50 naval vessels and about 320 aircraft organised in three service branches and four cross-branch sections. The military is mainly defence oriented, and expeditionary capabilities are therefore limited. Most of the equipment is manufactured domestically by state-owned companies and is considered technologically sophisticated. Military funding is by tradition high. Overview:
CONTENTS
Purpose and doctrine The ultimate purpose of the Sedunnic Armed Forces is to prevent a foreign occupation of Sedunn and secure its continuing existence as an independent nation, by defending the nation and its interests in the world, and asserting the territorial integrity. Furthermore, they shall support the civil society in case of natural disasters, and deploy forces to aid allies and in peacekeeping efforts. The Sedunnic Armed Forces are dimensioned to defeat an enemy attacking from one direction and simultaneously stall the enemy in a second and third direction (a three-front war on its own soil). Sedunn has since after the Great War focused on defensive capabilities rather than offensive, and lacks thereof extensive expeditionary capabilities. Striving to obtain the highest level of mobility, fire power and protection, the armed forces rely on technologically sophisticated and expensive equipment. Current deployment Portions of the navy are always deployed away from Sedunn to guard trade routes, gather intelligence, and serve as a first line of defence in certain areas of interest. It is rumoured that the navy always keeps two attack submarines on missions like these. Sedunn currently has about 700 troops engaged in peacekeeping operations in the war torn nation Federation of Transsuneria, in close cooperation with allied nations. The mission started in 2014 and is expected to end 2019. [Image: nkD1E7U.png]
Current deployment. Sedunn is marked in blue. The military is currently involved in peacekeeping operations in Transsuneria. Since re-establishing the Sedunno-Karnetvorian alliance, Sedunn has been allowed to base personnel in Tasternine to support and serve the navy. Sedunn will also establish a naval support base in Transsuneria following granting it a guarantee of independence. Funding and manpower The Sedunnic Armed Forces receive a yearly funding of about 4.4% of GDP, a number that has been stable since after the Great War. This number does not include civilian defences or the Sedunnic coastguard, which is a branch of the police. In 2016 the budget was second largest single portion of the Government's total budget, after social spending. The figure includes some material development expenses. [Image: 3019502_1200_675.jpg?preset=article-slider] A physical fitness test during the Military Service Suitability Evaluation. In Sedunn, military (or civilian) service is compulsory from the age of 18 for all men and women (since 2017). When turning 17, all Sedunnic citizens are called to physical and psychological tests to evaluate suitability. Tens of thousands of men and women from 18 years of age are conscripted for either military or civilian service. After the service an offer is given to serve in the Standing Forces, which is wholly based on voluntary service. After the service period of five years where participating in yearly refresher training is mandatory, joining the Local Guard Forces is offered. The armed forces consists of about 211,500 troops in total, of which 51,576 are active (24%) and 61,000 belong to the Local Guard Forces (29%). In total, about 1.3% of the population is directly engaged in Sedunn's military defence, of which 53% serve voluntary units. Organisation and structure The daily operations are controlled and supervised by the Armed Forces Command, as instructed by the Government of Sedunn. Military operations are delegated to, and coordinated by eight defence regions (below figure), each headed by a regional staff. Responsibilities include training of troops as specified by the Military Headquarters, deployment preparation and readiness, and cooperation with civilian authorities (crisis management). Defence regions in Mainland Sedunn since the 1948 reform. The eighth region (not shown above) is composed of Vastraenn Province. The Sedunnic Armed Forces has three service branches: Army (Trammtasstled), Navy (Sevvtasstled) and the Air Force (Lytretasstled). The army is the largest branch in numbers. The navy is mainly a blue-water navy but has also brown-water ships for home defence. The navy has the most long-range capabilities of the armed forces. The air force operates all manned military aerial craft. The standing (active) forces are fully mobilised within eight hours and the rest within two days or less. Sedunic Armed Forces personnel in numbers: Sedunnic Armed Forces: 211,500. Active: 51,576, of which
Sedunn also has so-called "cross-branch sections", that receive personnel from all three branches. These include the Digital and Space Commands (managing cyber and space surveillance operations respectively), the Military Intelligence Service, and the Special Operations Forces (with an unknown number of special operation operatives, it is often estimated that they have a total strength of about 800). Peacetime organisation During peace, the combat units are stationed and as shown below. Branches There are three service branches in the Sedunnic military. The highest organisational level of the armed forces is the brigade. All three branches maintain several standing units, which differ from the mobilised (reserve) mainly by mobilisation time and of course readiness. The Standing Forces (Hetuskederd) consists of 51,576 men and women. Its main task is to maintain a war deterring effect and to stall invading forces in case of a coup de main long enough for the reserve to mobilise. An increasingly important task is to provide allies with support and defence. The standing units often maintain distinct traditions from their parent units, even though they often train together. The Reserve Forces or Mobilisation Forces (Klannijgstovd) consists of about 159,924 troops. Its main task is to prevent a foreign occupation of Sedunn. It is dimensioned to defeat an enemy attacking from one direction and simultaneously stall the enemy in a second and third direction (a three-front war on its own soil). During mobilisation the navy and the air force receive a comparatively large number of troops. The bulk of the mobilised troops are dedicated to protection of bases and deployment areas. The navy mainly mobilises smaller auxiliary ships. The air force mobilises the rest of the available aircraft, prepares and serves decentralisation of the squadrons from air bases. All ships and aircraft have double crews and pilots. [Image: TWajpv3.png] [Image: Y3yYhjN.png][Image: oQ3F751.png]
Coats of arms of the Sedunnic Army, Navy and Air Force Army The Army manages all operations that involve movement on the ground, it also has all the ground-to-air and ground-to-sea units. There are four types of brigades in the Sedunnic army: the field brigades (mechanised), mountain brigades, city brigades, and coastal brigades, see Brigade types for explanation. Standing Army Motto: Tuvvei skrannom, tuvvei ressom! - Strike hard, strike fast! (See also Trivia below). The Standing Army (Hetutrammtasstled) consists of 34,076 men and women. It fields
In case of mobilisation the Local Guard Forces is put under the Standing Army's command to secure vital mobilisation infrastructure, defence installations, and vital public systems. List of standing units Reserve The army reserve fields about 151,524 troops, with the following key combat units (standing sub-units included).
Refresher Training Most men and women in the mobilised forces have to participate in a month-long refresher training exercise every four years, a two weeks-long exercise every year and a few shorter exercises. They are compensated by the state for missed work hours. Refresher training is mandatory until reaching the upper military age. Depending on civil profession, the type of service might change to make use of specific knowledge and skills. Brigade types Four main types of brigades exist in the Sedunnic Armed Forces: field brigades (mechanised), mountain brigades, city brigades, and coastal brigades.
Navy Motto: Einnd tege jann - The horizon belongs to you The Navy conduct operations on and under the surface and maintain advanced anti-air capabilites. Most of its forces are active and is the nation's foremost means of power projection. The reserve forces are mainly of the type base protection and support units, but there are also reserve crews for minor vessels. Standing Navy The standing navy (Hetusevvtasstled) consists of 9,600 men and women, standing base protection personnel included. It also fields one amphibious battalion. During peace, the standing navy mainly operates from four bases: Essela, Ullenst, Flered and Sraved. Since the 2017 Naval Reform the navy is structured in the following way: Ocean Fleet (Sevv-vavvenis):
The ships of the Ocean Fleet (blue-water) are intended for long-range operations on open waters and are the primary means of power projection, while the ships of the Home Fleet are intended for brown-water operations closer to the home shores. The 1st and 2nd Destroyer Flotilla train and support three Plannsevvd and Vetem-class destroyers respectively, the 1st and 2nd Frigate Flotilla 4+3 Servelann-class frigates, and the 1st Submarine Flotilla most likely has three Ressem-class submarines. The Corvette Flotillas and the two remaining Submarine Flotillas each operate 12 Flered- or Loenn-class corvettes and about nine Noslenravad-class submarines respectively. These Home Fleet Flotillas together have the responsibility to maintain ships in Sraved, Vastraenn in the so-called Task Force Vastraenn in a rotational system. The flotillas also train and deploy eleven standing base protection battalions (which consist of about 500 troops). Radar and weather services personnel and additional support personnel are also part of the flotillas. The 1st Transport flotilla operates several transport and support ships, most notably the amphibious warfare ship Lusuvvd. In total, the standing navy operates five destroyers, seven frigates, 12 corvettes and 12+ submarines (i.e. 36 combat ships). List of major active Sedunnic navy ships Air force Sedunn has a sizeable air force, with over 300 disposable combat aircraft. The active forces are composed as shown below.
Cross-branch sections The so-called cross-branch sections conduct and solve non-conventional operations, like espionage, cyber operations, psyops and complex combat missions. These sections include the Digital and Space Commands (managing cyber and space surveillance operations respectively), the Military Intelligence Service, and the Special Operations Forces (with an unknown number of operatives, it is often estimated that they have a total strength of about 800). The Sedunnic Likktahinndref (Psychological Defence) is a civilian authority under the Civil Defence and is not included, although it co-operates with elements from the cross-branch sections. Special operations forces Very little about the Sedunnic special operations forces is known. Four different units (groups) are known to exist. The number of troops is secret, but it is as mentioned estimated to around 800.
Space Command Onneseoverr, or Space Command, is not a combat force, focusing on surveillance and intelligence gathering using satellites. The command has two main bases, one is located somewhere in the Limmvasd Mountain Range, operating Sedunn's surveillance satellites. The other one is located outside Levenst, Vastraenn, from where the satellites are launched. Digital Command Sieannberett, or Digital Command, is like the Satellite Command not a combat force. It manages cyber operations, both offensive and defensive. According to confirmed reports, the Command was involved in psyops operations in Sporaltryus. Military Intelligence Service By nature, very little is publicly known about the Rammet Hekktundevvt (RHd - Military Intelligence Service). Its personnel is known to work aboard the air force's signal intelligence aircraft. Equipment and suppliers Most of the military equipment used by the Sedunnic Armed Forces is manufactured in Sedunn, by companies that are entirely publicly owned (Law 1021-1912). An organisation called Materiel Requisition in Austral, organised under the Defence Command, is responsible for research, preliminary testing and procurement of military hardware. Selling military equipment to other nations is strictly regulated by law (Law 1022-1912) and is normally only reserved to closely allied nations. However, Sedunn has been known to support rebellions and foreign powers with weapons when it has served a very specific purpose. Major manufacturers of weapons and vehicles include the following.
Below is a selection of Sedunnic weapons and equipment. Ranks and insignia The ranks of the Sedunnic army are shown below. It is, with a few exceptions, applicable to the other service branches. History The Sedunnic Amred Forces have been involved in numerous wars and conflicts. Below is a selection. Major Reforms Since Sedunn emerged as unified nation, it has maintained a seizable military force. To cope with international threats and technology advancements, the military has implemented many reforms striving for technological and tactical superiority. Below is a list of major recent reforms and the political decisions behind them. WIP Ground Combat System 14 Renewal Ground Combat System 14 is a series of new equipment and vehicles mainly to the army aiming to improve mobility and fire power in line with the Doctrine of 1990. To improve mobility, towed artillery is abolished and replaced with self-propelled pieces. The army's fire-control systems undergo an extensive modernisation, mainly improving close air support and artillery spotting capabilities. With this renewal the last of the infantry brigades are fully mechanised and the number of anti-air systems increases in all field brigades. Range, accuracy and electronic warfare capabilities are widely improved. To increase the mechanisation ratio and to support the introduction of new more advanced equipment, the number of troops in general, and especially the number of infantry brigades, was reduced significantly. In 1972 a total of 1.2 million troops could have been fielded in case of mobilisation, compared to today's 234,000, but the overall fire-power and mobility have improved significantly. The mechanised infantry brigades have also been merged with the armoured brigades, forming so-called mechanised brigades. Uniforms A unified standard uniform was untroduced by King Poljier I in mid 17th century. At first, blue was preffered as the main colour, with details in white and yellow. With the 1800 Uniform, grey was choosen to replace blue, and over time the grey was made darker. The last grey field uniform was the model 1906, which was replaced by a green uniform in 1935. Today, a green-grey-brown camoflage pattern uniform is used. The standard dress uniform is largely based on a late 19th century field uniform. See below. Miscellaneous & Trivia Radio Alphabet The radio alphabet (used for call-signs etc) is made up of Sedunnic two-syllable male names. C, Q, W, X and Z are not present in the Sedunnic alphabet. Service Admonition Music Over the centuries, many songs, poems and marches have been written by and for those serving in the military. Below is a selection.
