Regional Update September 2017
Introduction

Following a surge after the region was commended by the Security Council in April, Forest’s population is now stable at 230 to 250 nations. At time of writing, 70 nations were WA members, of which 59 were endorsing the delegate, making
[Image: ransium__343083t2.jpg] The United Mangrove Archipelago of Ransium one of the more influential delegates of a user created region. We also have a notable concentration of Issues Editors and authors, with 5 editors and a number of multiply published authors having a presence either as natives or through puppets.

Forest this summer has had a real positive buzz about it. It remains a very active region with 30 to 40 poll responses being typical (meaning we're making decisions with a level participation comparable to the legislatures of the far larger GCRs) and a vibrant and varied RMB. I for one am very proud to call it home.

 N-Day 2

As an eco-friendly, pacifist region you wouldn’t expect to us to be enthusiastic about nuclear war, but with considerable irony we entered the fray on N-Day 2 and (to our own surprise as much as anyone else’s) finished in fourth position, the highest scoring and by far the largest faction to receive no radiation. In the final hour we even managed to wreak Gaia’s vengeance on some of NationStates' least eco-friendly nations (you know who you are!). Thanks go to our allies
Spiritus and International Democratic Union as well as all those who came to cooperate with us as nuclear death rained from the skies.

 World Assembly

Our delegate
[Image: ransium__343083t2.jpg]The United Mangrove Archipelago of Ransium has authored no less than three successfully adopted recent World Assembly resolutions: Trade of Endangered Organisms (GA #403), Commend Yggdrasil (SC #221) and Commend Drasnia (SC #224).

 Interregional Events and Cultural Happenings

[Image: frieden-und_freudenland__712949t2.jpg]The Democratic Island Federation of Frieden-und Freudenland took two medals at the Oatland Olympics, [Image: mount_seymour__109607t2.jpg]The Pacific Alpine Commonwealth of Mount Seymour finished strongly in Where the Wild Things Are’s Royal Ass Côte and Forest nations have three times won The Bar on the Corner of Every Region’s Weekend Poetry Competition. We were also pleased to accept an invitation to the next Cross Regional Games hosted by Wysteria.

Forest has established a regional library and is now preparing for this year’s photography competition. Roleplay Minister [Image: caracasus__976299t2.jpg]The United Socialist States ofCaracasus is facilitating a closed diplomatic summit on the NS forum and a weekly Post an Account From Your Nation event on the RMB.

 Raiders...?

We were slightly perplexed to receive two visits from
The Black Hawks, who arrived each time at major update endorsing the Forest nation with the second largest number of endorsements. We can only assume that this was an attempt to break [Image: ransium__343083t2.jpg]The United Mangrove Archipelago of Ransium’s delegate streak as it approached two years, something we would have been completely unconcerned about. We can only wonder why they bother, but are grateful to the defenders who arrived to foil the operation.

 Government Matters

We have opened embassies with
Oatland and Haiku, plus an embassy thread on the forum of The North Pacific. We have also introduced an ambassador programme and appointed representatives to The South PacificThe Rejected RealmsInternational Democratic UnionYggdrasilCanadaTexasGayPhilosophy 115Democratic Socialist Assembly and Hippy Haven.

The post of Statistics and Research Minister, which had been vacant for some time, has now been filled by [Image: montmorencia__497150t2.png]The Kingdom of Montmorencia. Amongst other tasks, the Minister will be updating the record of Exceptionally Green Nations and Ransium’s Greenness Index. After some debate and a vote, we chose not to add either of the new Egalitarian and Feminist tags to the region because, although many of us are feminists or sympathetic to feminism, we decided not to detract from our focus as an environmentalist region.

September is election season in Forest as we choose a Forest Keeper to be the region’s leader for the next 12 months. This involves a 3 week shut down of government during which time embassy requests and other matters cannot be dealt with.

Regional Update November 2017

Election and government business

September saw the annual election for Forest Keeper, the head of the regional government. Five candidates ran, and a closely fought campaign began between the incumbent
[Image: mount_seymour__109607t2.jpg]Mount Seymour (better known to many as [Image: somyrion__960921t2.jpg]Somyrion and
[Image: aumeltopia__757093t2.png]Aumeltopia here in TSP) and newcomer [Image: palos_heights__310418t2.png]Palos Heights. With a few days left to go, however, [Image: mount_seymour__109607t2.jpg]Mount Seymour announced their withdrawal due to real life commitments and as a result the election was a landslide victory for [Image: palos_heights__310418t2.png]Palos Heights, who secured a crushing 85% of the vote - a great achievement for a young nation of just over 1 billion population.Although new applications were invited [Image: palos_heights__310418t2.png]Palos Heights has chosen to retain the previous government team with the exception of Culture Minister, which [Image: mount_seymour__109607t2.jpg]Mount Seymour takes on following [Image: frieden-und_freudenland__803907t2.jpg]Frieden-und Freudenland's decision to retire. The government is:

WA Delegate: [Image: ransium__343083t2.jpg]Ransium
Culture Minsiter: [Image: mount_seymour__109607t2.jpg]Mount Seymour
Foreign Affairs Minister: [Image: uan_aa_boa__345079t2.jpg]Uan aa Boa
Roleplay Minister: [Image: caracasus__976299t2.jpg]Caracasus
Regional Historian and Recruitment Minister: [Image: mozworld__466874t2.jpg]Mozworld

In a new initiative designed to increase openness and accountability, government discussions are now held in The Government Glade, a Discord channel visible to all Forest residents.

[Image: palos_heights__310418t2.png]Palos Heights says, "For the strongest tree is not measured by the rings around its trunk or the size of its canopy, but the strongest tree is known by all by its roots."

"My premiership in Forest has been one underscored by the community rising to the occasion. Forest had an amazing Z-Day experience and it is thanks to the great people of Forest that we had such a turn-out. Forest is strong not because of any one individual leader, and I am excited to begin cultivating more leaders such as the wonderful individuals Mount Seymour, Mozworld, Errinundera, and Drasnia who lead us through Z-Day.

My time as Forest Keeper will be one of natural growth, strengthening our roots, and spreading the Forest way."

Following the focus on the election and on Z-day, the only major item of business has been a review of embassy policy and consideration of whether to close our embassy with a region that has become inactive. This was robustly debated, after which a regional poll decided against closure by a margin of 30 votes to 16.

The Ambassador Programme has expanded with 9 nations now assisting the Foreign Affairs Minister. Oatland and Antarctica have both agreed to open their embassies to posting by all nations in allied regions.

World Assembly Matters - 2 new commendations

The recent votes to commend Forestians
[Image: zwangzug__511154t2.png]Zwangzug and [Image: candlewhisper_archive__495333t2.jpg]Candlewhisper Archive continue a period of ascendancy for Forest in the Security Council, with the region's commendation being followed by these two new resolutions and the passage of three resolutions by our delegate [Image: ransium__343083t2.jpg]Ransium.

Z-Day 6

Forest was delighted to place third in the event for both total number of survivors and total number of survivors with no infection.

Forest's population hit an all time record of over 500 nations and 3 trillion people in the run-up to Z-day. Following a pre-agreed plan all active nations began researching a cure - this was so effectively implemented that there were only one or two isolated incidences of anyone doing anything else. Coordinated cure missile strikes quickly began and, with the borders closed to newcomers for the time being, the region became infection free 14 hours after the beginning of the event.

Forest then began to admit and cure batches of refugees, advertising this offer on the NS forum. Initially this was quite successful and a number of nations either took refuge in Forest for the remainder of the event or returned to battle the zombies refreshed and replenished. As time went on, however, nations that had embraced the zombies and wanted to infect Forest began to outnumber genuine asylum seekers. These were quickly banjected on every occasion, but we hadn't anticipated the new feature allowing zombie hordes to convert other nations to zombie exporters in a single attack. This caused a brief outbreak of Forest nations going rogue, and as one was sadly offline at the time there was no alternative but to temporarily eject them.

After reviewing this, and being aware that we were being targeted by zombie factions from other regions, the decision was taken to leave the borders closed until the threat had passed.

At time of writing our regional population remains up at 340-350 nations with several new active contributors who have joined us because of Z-day (as well as some puppets that haven't yet been moved out!)

Future Events at the Culture Ministry

Forest's annual photography competition is coming soon and submissions from our embassy regions would be extremely welcome. Other new events are also in the pipeline, so watch out for new updates, especially as the holiday season approaches...

Forest January Update
Government of Forest

Founder: Errinundera
WA Delegate: Ransium
Forest Keeper: Uan aa Boa
Deputy Forest Keeper: Turbeaux
Embassy Officer: Ruinenlust
WFE Editor: Mozworld
Roleplay Mentor: Caracasus
Forum and Discord Sower: Mount Seymour
Gameplay Ambassador: Lord Dominator
Head Cartographer: Areulder
Statistics Officer: Blon Gre
Voice of Forest: Canaltia

Foreword

Since this is the first of a series of updates, a foreword would be a good way to start this one off. This is the January Forest Update, a series of paragraphs meant to condense all of the important events in the previous 3 months for the benefit of our embassy regions. As Voice of Forest, it is my honor to manage these updates. Because this is the first update, it’s a way for me to lay the groundwork for what I want to do with these updates, and it will evolve based off of what is needed, what would make it more effective, and most importantly, what you lovely people want to see.

Government

In the past three months, Forest has been blessed with a very stable government, with 2 additions, no removals, and no changes for government positions. The additions were the Statistics Officer, and the Voice of Forest, and were following a telegram sent out by Uan aa Boa on November 11th.  To quote Uan, the purpose of the Statistics Officer is “to decide on a new format to recognise environmental excellence and put new dispatches in place.“ Basically, the Statistics Officer is given the responsibility of carrying on Montmorencia’s work, and creating a ranking system to celebrate the many environmentally outstanding nations in Forest. This position went to Blon Gre, who was appointed on November the 21st.

The second position, Voice of Forest, is given the task of “prepare[ing] regional news updates for our ambassadors to post in our embassy regions and their off-site fora, as well as our new thread in the NS gameplay forum”. The position was given to me, Canaltia, and this update is the first of the regional news updates mentioned above.

Embassies

When Uan aa Boa was elected as Forest Keeper, one of their goals was to increase Forest’s embassy presence. In my opinion, the last while has been a tremendous success with embassies. Forest has opened no less than four new embassies, and there have been seven ambassador appointments.

Starting with the embassies, on November the 27th, Forest opened embassies with Conifer, the environmentally-friendly region of 101 nations (at the time of writing), following a 33-1 vote. On December the 6th, Forest and the influence powerhouse of Europe opened embassies, with a similar 33-1 vote in favour. A mere 4 days later, embassies with Sonindia, a defender and RP region, were opened, after a 21-14 vote. Last but not least, embassies with Wintreath, the eternal winter wonderland, were opened after an 18-1 vote on December the 29th.
Following these embassies, ambassadors were appointed shortly after. Seagull was appointed to Conifer, New Ladavia to Europe, yours truly to Sonindia, and Turbeaux to Wintreath. In addition to these, three ambassadors were appointed to other embassy regions who didn’t have ambassadors previously. On November 19th, Palos Heights was appointed to Oatland, and on November 20th, Rejectionville was appointed to The Bar on the Corner of Every Region, and The Southern Cascadian States to Winterfell.

Culture

Recently, Forest has been blessed with not just one, but two major cultural events, with the Autumnal Writing Contest and the Forest Photo Contest. The Autumnal Writing Contest, organized and run by Caracasus, opened for submissions on October the 22nd to anyone in Forest or a region we have an embassy with. After all of the amazing submissions, the judges managed to pick out winners on December the 7th. Congratulations to everyone involved, since there were some truly inspiring pieces of writing submitted. You can find all the details in the contest dispatches linked below.
https://www.nationstates.net/page=dispatch/id=1106052
https://www.nationstates.net/page=dispatch/id=1135956

Beginning December 1st and ending at the last second of 2018, the Photo Contest was run by Mount Seymour and was open to any nation in Forest or a region with embassies with Forest. The amount of not just submissions, but high quality submissions, was astounding. Sure enough, the winners were announced last night, and you can find the details here:
https://www.nationstates.net/page=dispatch/id=1132499
https://www.nationstates.net/page=dispatch/id=1147325

Conclusion

That about sums up the Forest happening in the last few months. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, shoot me a telegram and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Thank you to all of the people in our embassy regions for making the past three months so enjoyable.
