[DRAFT] [2237.AB] Assembly approval of the Election Commissioner
#12

(08-26-2022, 01:28 PM)HumanSanity Wrote: Not to mention, there's a logistical difficulty with this proposal. My understanding is that before Kris became the stable and consistent Election Commissioner, the EC was often appointed last minute before an election and by a game of "nose goes" among the CRS. If the EC then required Assembly confirmation, we just often wouldn't have an EC.

If we don't trust the CRS to appoint the EC, we have bigger problems, frankly, and this proposal wouldn't fix them. But the region does trust the CRS.

The system is fine. Why does it need to be changed at all?

I understand the point you are coming from, however, though how unbiased the CRS may be, the Assembly should still have a say in important figures of our region's government. And a say can be the act of a recall and, or, a motion of no-confidence, but can also be the approval of a high-ranking governmental official. This comes back to the idea of committees, and hearings, and we could easily have a hearing, where members of the potential committee on Elections and Ethics could question the EC nominee, and then bring the vote to the Assembly.
