Just finished Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer.

It takes a lot of skill to craft a story which is simultaneously so beautiful and so horrific, so peaceful and so quietly unsettling. The way in which so much of what makes this story disturbing is hidden at the edge of sight is particularly striking and a reminder that Vandermeer is not just a writer who can craft beautiful prose, but who is able to utilise it so effectively, The effect is as profoundly imaginative and wonderful as it is disturbing.

This is also the first book I have read that really deserves the term Kafkaesque in its most literal sense. There was something very reminiscent of Kafka in the nameless characters and the almost dreamlike progression of events.

I look forward to reading the other two books in the trilogy, though I do not know when that might be.
