[IC] King Andrei of Stoinia State Visit to Izaakia
#11

“I’ve always found what is right for one country is not always right for another, ultimately all we can hope for is stable and fair governance. Speaking of Eareamia, their royal family lived here when they were in exile during the communist times, and as much as our paths have very much split, I do hope the situation evolves peacefully and positively.

Interesting you should say that about king and Voievod being interchangeable, we have a similar thing with President and Montwælda, which in old Montacian means mountain wielder, as whoever controlled the mountain controlled the nation.

But alas, here we are Voievod and Montwælda, taking in the fresh air on a hunt, and with some luck building bridges to tie our future prosperity together.”

A man in a tweed suit runs from the house and across the moor, with clear disregard for the preservation of his outfit, falling over at one point. He reaches the two leaders, and whispers into President Blancs ear. After this exchange she says to King Andrei.

“I’m afraid I have some intelligence to share with you, by all accounts the Denverian navy have defected to the Nationalist side, and are making their way northwards towards our region. If you wouldn’t mind, we should proceed to the house, a full briefing will be available there, and please take my secure command room to talk with your military and government.

I’ll have our birds dropped off with the chef, and meet you again at dinner? Please, ask if you need anything.”
Gianni: “Izaakia, I hate you so much. You’re such a good bad guy. Must be because of your genes“.

- "You do have a point. Despite our long friendship with Sedunn, both of us firmly believe in our own ideas. Hence why Stoinia has a Voievod and Sedunn a Dellm. As for the Earamian royal family... Perhaps we should have welcomed them to our nation and perhaps taught them a few more manners."
As President Blanc was discussing with her assistant, Andrei raised an eyebrow. He decided not to press the matter and inspected his pheasant one last time.
- "That's quite a turn of events. Thank you for your hospitality, I'll use your room at once. Hopefully our dinner will be more philosophical and less reactionary."

President Blanc and King Andrei reconvene for dinner, as a starter they’re served pheasant breast in a garlic butter sauce on a bed of butter fried asparagus, served with a Vintage 1996 Chateau Porthos Pinot Noir.

“I must apologise for earlier, and I hope you can forgive me, but as I’m sure you saw, this was rather exceptional. I don’t mind telling you, between friends, we’re sending a fleet south to dispatch with the fleet headed for Remetull. Can’t afford to have trade disrupted on the Keyli-Home Nations shipping route.”

As they begin to tuck in, President Blanc notes on the tastiness of the starter.

“When it comes to pheasant, they say you should either eat it as fresh as possible, or leave it to hang until it’s head falls off. I for one, have never managed to make it to the second stage. It’s very Izaakian to be straight to the point, that new world entrepreneurial spirit, no time to sit back and savour things.

But of course, we’re no longer just a new world country, we are now reunited with the home nations in the old world. Which is of course, why we’re sitting down together, to discuss our present and our future together in Bailtem.”

- "No worries. I fully understand that matters of state rarely require your attention when time is on your side. I'm understand you want to protect your trade, but I'm confident the Sedunners and the Imperial Federation won't allow the fleet to wreck havoc. Some might view your stance as projection of power to distant nation, though I'm sure they don't fully understand the Izaakian perspective."
The King started with his meal. Although he wasn't a fan of the fried asparagus, he did have to concede to the fact that it blende quite well with the pheasant in garlic butter sauce. He took a sip from the wine as well and let his taste buds wash over with the all too familiar taste of wine. Instead of answering the President's question directly, he would enjoy a bit of small talk first.
- "Not bad. Come to think of it perhaps we should talk about new wine imports and exports. After all, the Mediterranean Viticulture Group can't shine without competition. As for your newly reunited nation, I think the Cross-Mediterranean Economic Community is just as important to the future. Wouldn't you agree?"

“Oh the CMEC sure it has its place, as you know we weren’t invited to join, but we see the benefit of the stability it should bring to the region. But of course, I am a fan of Mediterranean wines, it’s only been quite recently we’ve had full access to the Montacia and Brodlancia wines that have been perfected over millennia on the steady old world slopes. Actually, here in Keyli the wine market hasn’t been huge, with our climate, vines aren’t exactly on the cards, we’re more of a Beer and Spirits nation. Actually, when we get to the main course, it’s been paired with a beer, but all in good time.”

She takes a sip of wine, and grins with satisfaction.

“I’m sure we have a lot more to offer each other than just wine. Cheese perhaps, I don’t know if you’ve ever had Izaakian cheese, but the damp and wet climate down here, which I’m sure you’ve noticed is near constant, produces some of the finest and freshest grass in the world, which in turn produces some of the best dairy and meat products. Perhaps we should partake in a cheese supper later on this evening.”

-"Ah yes, the CMEC. Well I'm sure that Izaakian economy can holds on its own. Or so your Foreign minister tells us. But alas... If you're people are more akin to beer and spirits, we have an assortment of those as well. Reminds me of last time a Sedunnic official visited Sinaia and we gave him some țuică. Poor fellow didn't quite know what hit him. I think they should train diplomats for that as well."
The King chuckled and took another sip from his wine before continuing.
- "I'm afraid we Stoinians haven't had the luxury of your cheese. Then again we are a Tarnian people. Our forefathers were in our eyes the grandfathers of Bailtemmic pastoral culture and thus ingrained in our society. I'll be more than happy to be a taste judge. But speaking of native grass, I'm also interested in how the Keylian natives are faring these days? If I recall they were called the Keya'Iluti, correct? Weren't they a pastoral people as well?"

“You’d have thought university would be sufficient training for diplomats to build up alcohol tolerance. Although, perhaps Sedunners are just lightweights.”

She finishes her drink and calls for a new one.

”Yes, the Keya’iluti, but none of them were pastoral, we have 4 tribes, the two biggest were the Ma’kaui and Ra’kau, they lived along the coast, mainly they survived from fishing, whaling and some gathering berries etc. Then you have the M’ania, they lived more on the plains and forests further south a mainly hunted the great Wooly Buffalo of the south for food, and hunted for pelts and bearskins to trade. Further south than that, we then have the Aput, literally the snow people, they live on the polar snow caps, they track the penguin migrations for food and occasionally roam along the icecap towards the coast for fishing and seal clubbing.

As you may know, they haven’t had a great time since our arrival 400 years ago, we’ve had some disagreeable policies towards natives in the past, particularly the land seizures and forced adoptions of native children. The disenfranchisement of natives has led to a lot of substance and alcohol abuse in native communities, but i think we are starting to make headway. Our new environment minister Walter Rombold recently announced that we intend to recognise native populations as part of the natural ecosystem, and provide support to them for managing the environment.”

”So please do tell me, about some of your traditional Stoinia dishes, it’ll be interesting to see if there are any similarities with the Home Nations cuisine”

- "True hunters I see. Perhaps next time we should have a Keya'iluti huntsman as our guide or at my next visit to Keylian Izaakia. And the Wooly Buffalo, you know we do have a similar bovine in Stoinia, the Zimbru. Though less coated as the name suggests. I'm sure your plans might have some merit, but be sure to allow a large enough ecosystem as I fear most of it would in the long term rather become used for urban expansion. Wasn't there a plan by your mayor? 30 by 30 if I recall correctly."
Andrei took another sip from the Keylian wine and indulging in the unique taste.
- "Well. I think our cuisine is best summarized by a common motto within our nation: Mutton is the best vegetable. Being a pastoral people, I'm sure you can deduce the influence. But our cuisine has a wide variety of dishes from rolled cabbage rolls filled with minced meat to a bread filled with bean soup. Although our carnivore tendencies, we also have tons of vegan fastening food throughout the year. Perhaps our food companies could start exporting them to respond to the growing Keylian market of gluten-free and other diets to lessen the impact on the environment?"

“I’m sure we could find someone who would be happy to oblige, perhaps come back in summer and we can do a fishing trip with some of the Ma’kaui tribe. You are right, we do have the 30 for 30 scheme, an extra 12 million people in the next 8 years, but that is to the west of Izaakston, it’s largely former docklands, but alas, since improvements in shipping technology, shipping requires less space, and sadly less employees. It’s really more of a regenerations.”

”I do like the motto that mutton is the best vegetable, but sadly, I do think you’re right, we’re going to need to cut back on some meat for the sake of the environment. But let’s not get too bogged down in the sadness of reduced meat consumption, and call in the next course, it’s a curried venison dish, on a bed of spiced Izaakian rice, and I’ve paired it with one of my favourite beers. One of the major bonuses of being a seafaring nation, is the spices, an army May March on its stomach, but a navy sails on its taste buds.”

“Actually, one of our former Queens, Artemesia went on a voyage of exploration around the world when she was in exile in Hai Men, and brought back many spices we use today, and in fact chocolate.”

- "I'm afraid I'm not much of a person of curry and spices. But I'll try it nonetheless."
King Andrei chuckled as he admitted his tastes. He tried the curried venison. Although not a great enjoyer of curry, he did find that it blended remarkably well with the spiced rice. The beer as well complemented the rest of the dish. President Blanc once again proved she was a woman of good tastes.
- "Quite the mixture you've assembled. You certainly have my compliments for your tastes. As for your Queen Artemesia, let's toast on her adventurous spirit that brought us these spices. I hope she didn't have a fallout like Jezza III with the Sallodesians."
