A Consensus Reached: Down with Independentism
The South Pacific disavows its old “Independent” label

Change, my dear and it seems not a moment too soon…

A remarkable change of tone has swept through the corridors of power in The South Pacific. The Assembly has voted 15-0 to disavow its “independent” label.  Certainly, this is a major change for a region which only a year ago might have been described by some commentators as “devoutly” independent. The consensus was reached in regards to a recent amendment to Article 4.5 of the Code of Laws, which had labelled the South Pacific Special Forces, an “independent” army and explicitly condemned the presence of ideology in military policy.

The old independent label had long been a bone of contention, largely because it tied The South Pacific to a set of interregional expectations in regards to what an “independent” region was supposed to do – these expectations are, of course, the subject of the ongoing Independence Conference whose Europeian hosts controversially declined to invite The South Pacific to attend. Likewise there was significant debate surrounding whether independentism was in fact an ideology (not an absence of ideology), plus others too found the phrasing of “regional interests” invited a long, protracted and never particularly constructive regional dialogue over what the region’s “interests” entailed.

One of the more recent complaints about independentism surrounded its practical use – some found that in all likelihood, the SPSF was not currently justifying its actions based on the interests of their region, but instead the preferences of its soldiers – the interests of the region play a more retroactive role in managing the SPSF as, historically, officers have avoided leading missions which could have contradicted the foreign policy of their current government.

Kringalia, Delegate of The South Pacific was positive about the move.

“I am glad to see that this amendment was unanimously adopted,” says Kringalia. “While there is nothing wrong with Independence, some of us felt that the label simply didn’t fit the culture and interests of the South Pacific nowadays. I was favourably surprised by the civilised tone of the debate in the Assembly, which shows that it is possible to have a debate on ideology and still respect each other. In terms of the amendment itself, it was specifically drafted to make an accurate description of how our Special Forces already work, engaging in missions with both sides, and being welcoming to new recruits, regardless of their personal stances, which we agreed was a great model to follow.”

The new amendment replaces the old independent phrasing with a new value-neutral wording, which emphasises the necessity of civilian control of the military, supremacy of the law and foreign policy over military policy and an open and tolerant stance that embraces the diversity of The South Pacific’s members.

Last night, The South Pacific Special Forces conducted their first mission, among many more to come, we reckon, as a non-independent army in the attempted liberation of Coalition of Catholic States.

About time too.

Should have gotten something from an SPSF member too on how they feel about this.

Too bad for you that it uses the past tense. Wink

1. Independence. "Independentism" sounds so terrible that it just hurts my ears.
2. Very dramatic title for something that changed absolutely nothing in reality and was really just a name change. Tounge
