Was the Soviet Union's collapse good or bad?
#1

You know the former nation. It was a juggernaut. It had satellite states after WW2 and propagated communism across the globe. Along with Cuba, it caused the 1962 Missile Crisis. It had harsh policies against freedom, democracy and dissidents. But it finally fell in 1991, along with its satellite states. And maybe Putin wants to re-create it, Putin style.

Its the Soviet Union!

Now, I ask TSP this question: Was the Soviet Union's collapse good or bad?

I believe that it was a glorious fall. The Soviet Union oppressed many ethnic groups, and it was obvious that they wanted out of the USSR. With its oppressive policies, I see no mercy for the Soviet Union. In fact, it tried to "russify" other cultures that were in its territory. It was truly a fall that changed the world for the better.

I disagree with your statement that the Soviets and Cuba were the only ones responsible for the Cuban missile crisis; Kennedy knowingly escalated the conflict by imposing the so-called "quarantine" around Cuba, a blockade in all but name.

And Gorbachev was one of the better Soviet leaders.

That is true. And Gorbachev was the one who tried to modernize the Soviet Union(I think?) to the modern world. Still, that union fell.

As much as there may have been a few good periods of leadership in the USSR its fall was by far a good thing, especially with all the ethnic cleansing policies they tried to impose.

Then again it wasn't really Gorbachev's fault; he tried to introduce more freedoms to the USSR. The Soviet people just generally liked Boris Yeltsin more, and Boris Yeltsin did not like the USSR.

It was good at the time, but Vladimir Putin seems to be undoing what had happened that year. To elaborate, I think that Russia is regressing back to its communist empire days.

Considering its oppression of dissidents and its policies against non-Russians, the collapse of the USSR was indeed a good thing.

@JCRules: Yeah, I think so too, but without the "communist" part.
