Kurdish independence
#11

The Kurds indeed deserve their own country. However, in my opinion, it can only happen if Iraq is split into at least three nations (a Kurdish one, a Sunni one, and a Shi'ite one). Neither Turkey nor Iran would give any part of their territory to the Kurds, considering their past history with them.

The entire border-drawing after WWI and the Ottoman collapse was a complete fuck-up. The best way to solve the issue (although by far the most difficult) would be to just go in and draw some better lines on the map.

The way I see it is that Iraq will not not cut into three until after ISIS is dealt with. But even then, it is many belief that many politicians in the U.S. will not support a Shiite part of Iraq.

The US government is currently divided between the liberal Democrats and the conservative Republicans. Even if the Democrats tried to set up good relations with such a state, the Republicans would raise a stink.

Are you sure, because Obama had the opportunity to do this and instead left Iraq in 2011 cold-turkey. We should have finished what we started in Iraq and then cut it up, but we didn't.

There was a lot of pressure to get the US out of Iraq.

Even though it was not a good war to start, we should have finished what we started there, even with the pressure. Because we pulled out of Iraq too early, we allowed an insurgency to rise and now we have ISIS out there in Northern Iraq.

How many more years would we have to stay there to "finish" what we started? What exactly would be different if we stayed 5 10 more years? We spent 10 years "training" the Iraqi army and they still dont stand and fight. They still are divided over religious lines. Shites wont take order from a sunni and vice versa, so what happens is that you get secterian violence that will never stop no matter how long we are there.

Im so sick and tired of hearing that same argument about how we shouldnt have left. Its naive. Btw we didnt just leave cold turkey....the Iraqis wanted us to leave. Remeber the status of forces agreement we tried to hash out with the iraq govt?

Where do you get the idea that the Obama admin had the ability to split Iraq up into different nations? Its a soverign nation, why the hell would they cut up their country into tiny bits because we say so? The arrogance of the west is that we somehow believe we can dictate to mid east countries what shape their countries should take. do we not learn anything from history? This is the same mistake western powers made after the fall of the ottomans and the end of wwI.
