I'm not sure, I'm not a part of this any more. But, some direction would be useful.

I think we were supposed to roleplay as if our nations were on a space race, similar to the USSR and the US between 1955 and 1972.

I think that was stated. I don't remember. What about sending a space box to space first or something?
Explain what they're supposed to be doing? Give the RP's rules and guidelines? Give plot suggestions? Introduce the setting with an RPed intro? There a lot more you can do than a "here's your teams, now do things."
