TOP STORY: IOC AND RYCCIA TO SIGN THE GOVERNMENT ISLAND ACCORD
David Tzeng, Il Protettore del Popolo

Leaders at the Crownsville Summit, held in the Douglas Room of the Marina Hotel

Government Island - A certain calm briefly spread over the South Pacific as Kringalian President Connor Walsh presented the final draft of the Government Island Accord and submitted it for signing by Ryccia and the International Oversight Commission.

In its final form the Accord provided for the already known International Tribunal for the Ryccian Wars and an Atomic Oversight Authority to ensure the reduction of the Ryccian nuclear arsenal to 150 warheads, but it also contained three additional chapters on military reduction and a social and economic development project.

In accordance with the consensus at the Crownsville Summit, the Ryccian military is to be dissolved and its asserts to be transferred to the National Guard, which will be limited to a purely defensive role, since Ryccia has formally forsaken the use of war as a foreign policy tool. In addition, caps have been placed on the size of the National Guard, the kind of weaponry that it may acquire and the conditions for its deployment overseas, which is subject to authorisation from a Military Commission composed of IOC members.

Chapter IV of the Accord provides for several human rights guarantees in Ryccia and contemplates cooperation with the Southern Cooperation Organisation in terms of social and economic development. It allows for humanitarian and technical aid aimed at ensuring long-term progress for Ryccia. It also formally lifts sanctions imposed by Resolution 002, paving the way for the reestablishment of diplomatic relations and trade between Ryccia and the rest of the world.

While peace between Ryccia and the Southern Cooperation Organisation has been guaranteed, leaders attending the Crownsville Summit are still worried about the increasing threats of aggression by Sporaltryus, whose leadership recently declared war on Ryccia and then refused to attend the Summit.

Qvaitican Secretary of Intelligence and Security Victor Cutter proposed imposing sanctions on Sporaltryus to force it to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the conflict, a motion seconded by representatives from Ryccia, Noctenos and Karnetvor. Foreign Secretary Crawford from Kringalia has been slightly more forceful, sending a diplomatic note to the Sporaltryan Government where he warned that the Southern Cooperation Organisation was legally bound to defend Ryccia from any external attacks.

Hostilities have no broke out thus far, but the concern is palpable at the Crownsville Summit, where the focus has turned from addressing Ryccian instability to containing potential Sporaltryan aggression.

2016 Qvaitican presidential election heats up, United Conservative Party divided
Jason Cobb, The Qvaitican Cascade

Primary voters from the previous Qvaitican presidential election

Sydney, Qvait - After Governor Natalie Cruz (Labor) suspended her campaign, two politicians from the Conservative side have also suspended their campaigns: Senators Timothy Walsh and Gavin Pierce. This now leaves four candidates altogether, two from the Labor Party and two from the United Conservative Party (UCP). However, the UCP has not been unity throughout Campaign 2016, where one candidate is an imperialist and the other is anti-imperialist. From time to time, Governor Nicole Chancellor (Conservative) has said that she envisioned a "New Qvaitican Empire," which Julia Burns (Labor), Congresswoman Margaret Harrison's running mate, called a "nostalgia trip."

Opposing Governor Chancellor in the Conservative primary is Giovanni Giletti, the incumbent Secretary of State. During his campaign, the Secretary of State said, "We are living in a time where empires cannot survive. If we elect someone like Nicole Chancellor, this country is bound to die. Instead, I will pursue a healthy relationship with our allies and ameliorate our relationship with the Southern Cooperation Organization and Sporaltryus."

On the Left, Congresswoman Harrison (Labor) no longer has to engage with Governor Cruz, whose isolationist policy led to her downfall in this year's presidential campaign, but instead has to fight House Minority Leader Alexandra Peters until the 3 November primary election. However, the media's top political analysts are predicting that the Labor nomination campaign is over because the Labor primary election will be a landslide in Congresswoman Harrison's favor.

On the sidelines, Victor Cutter, the inaugural President of Qvait and incumbent Secretary of Intelligence and Security, has dropped his endorsement of Governor Chancellor. Surprisingly enough, Cutter, who was a Conservative as President, has decided to defect to the Labor Party, citing division in the UCP and its decision to move towards imperialism. The Secretary of Intelligence and Security said, "The party that I knew a few years ago is gone. I do not recognize it anymore. For many years, Qvait has advocated peace, but the militaristic and imperialist movement has took over the Conservative Party. I know that my best friend MacArthur Knight, would have never wanted this."

Since its formation in April 2013, the United Conservative Party has advocated peace much like its then-Democratic and now-Labor Party counterpart. However, with the party's members divided between an imperialistic Governor Chancellor and an anti-imperialistic Secretary Giletti, it is hard to determine the future of a party that was once united under the late conservative icon MacArthur Knight who won the 2013 presidential election by garnering the support of the then-Republican and Constitutionalist Parties, which merged to become the United Conservative Party that same year.

With uncertainty of the future of the UCP looming, the media's political analysts are predicting that the Labor nominee, whether it be Harrison or Peters, will win the general election due to the divide in the UCP, setting the country up for its first left-wing President of the Second Republic.

Major Hammerstarian cities by been plagued by the white haze

Broadsword, Hammerstar - A dense haze has plagued the southern cities of Hammerstar since the morning of September 27. Thought it was initially thought to be fog, Hammerstar authorities have proclaimed it to be carbon-based haze.

Airports have been temporarily closed, though train stations are operating as usual. Hammerstar authorities are currently investigation the matter, trying to figure out a way to get rid of the smoke. Valiant Governor has issued a statement saying that while local authorities are looking into the matter, citizens and foreign tourists in Hammerstar should wear necessary equipment, such as masks and goggles, until further notice.

Though Hammerstar has been clouded by this haze, it has yet to reach neighbouring countries. Believing that such an event is imminent. Hammerstar will seek the neighbouring governments of Qvait, Rebeltopia and Kringalia to help it in getting rid of the haze before it reaches them.

A Mathematical Man, Part 1
A Biography of Connor Walsh, President of Kringalia

Connor Walsh is the 40th President of Kringalia

Connor Walsh is a man of contradictions, but he prefers to describe himself as a mathematical man. He was born in Jacqueline, a small town in Crowns Summits, on 12 September 1947, the only son of renowned physicist Matthew Young and chemist-turned-activist Frances Walsh. His childhood was characterised as quiet, since his parents insisted on homeschooling him throughout his elementary school years. He learned to love knowledge and developed a fondness for mathematics, which he later described as a perfect way of understanding the marvelous randomness of our world.

Once Walsh finished his elementary homeschooling, his parents decided to enrol him at the Jacqueline Royal School, a private school for children whose parents wanted to avoid the disastrous quality of public education at the time. He excelled at all his mathematics and physics classes, but also developed a skill for public speaking, serving as a founding member of the school debate society. Though several of his classmates and teachers insisted, he always refused to run for the Student Council, something he regretted in later years.

Having spent his teenage years bombared with news from the ongoing Great War and the subsequent Miller Reformation, he developed a sense of duty that left him conflicted: should he pursue his passion in mathematics or serve his country in a more direct way? He eventually chose the former out of a sense of responsibility to his parents, since he felt he owed them a legacy of science and knowledge. He decided to study mathematics at the prestigious Crownsville University; there he met Rachel Woods, a psychology major and his future wife. They started dating late in his second year.

By 1967 Walsh was the top of his class and had been offered a research internship at the Institute for Theoretical Studies, a think tank founded by King Eric I. However, his mathematical career was not meant to be, since he abruptly decided to drop out of Crownsville University and enlist in the Kringalian Army at age 21. It is unclear what made him change the course of his life so radically, though some say he had attended the farewell address of President Joseph Walton, who had portrayed enlistment in the military as the ultimate show of respect for the nation.

It was thus that Connor Walsh began the rest of his life.
