Well, that's true. The Cold War never ended. The only thing that changed was the politics of Russia.

The Cold War did end. But a few years later, Cold War 2.0 started.

What was the defining end point?

For me, the First Cold War ended in the fall of the Soviet Union. Cold War 2.0 started when Russia and the West began to bicker again.

^This. After all, Russia and the US had friendly relations during the 90's and early 2000's. I would place the end of the first one in 1989, when the communist bloc fell apart, rather than the fall of the Soviet Union. The second one began after Russia invaded Crimea.

Now, getting back to topic, I'm supporting the Opposition (Free Syrian Army and its allies) and the Kurds. I'm not sure if supporting Assad's government against ISIS is a good idea. Besides the obvious reasons (the fact that it attacks civilians and uses chemical weapons), those "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" alliances usually backfire; for example, the US supported Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq War, and you know how that turned out.

Also, the "soldiers defecting to ISIS" problem affects both the government and the opposition.

The downside is that one member of NATO is not helping the coalition that much, because it is targeting Kurds.
