Larger states tend to collapse when faced with greedy and often opportunistic individuals in a lower level of government make a power grab, often exploiting weakness or corruption (real or percieved) in the ruling power. In the feudal system this was often in the form of multiple sucessors who typically divided everything for themselves.
It's also really easy to your demand for independence when yoir citizens are walking around with military-grade weapons.

Yes, but the south is a whole region, I don't think any single state gets it worse then NJ.
