TOP STORY: INTERNATIONAL COALITION INVADES RYCCIA AND SPORALTRYUS

Kringalian Army troops occupying a town near the Resentine-Sporaltryus border

Sovranon - What many deemed unthinkable happened on October 11 when rebel forces in Sporaltryus and Ryccia launched nuclear missiles on the former capitals of each other. While several nations raised their readiness levels, Farengeto and Resentine forces unsuccessfully tried to intercept the missiles. Both hit their intended targets less than an hour after being launched, causing thousands of immediate deaths and contaminating nearby areas.

Following a brief period of confusion, Kringalian Ambassador Michael Stork introduced a draft resolution before the Southern Council on the morning of October 12, authorising the formation of an International Security Command to occupy Sporaltryus and Ryccia and dismantle their entire nuclear arsenals. While the resolution was still being voted on, the Resentinian Army began crossing the border into Sporaltryus, to dismantle the remaining nuclear missiles. One hour later Kringalia placed its 6th Army and the KNS Oscar Hansen aricraft carrier under the orders of Resentinian General Braddock, while the Farengeto Navy assembled near the Ryccian coast.

In response to an invitation by the Southern Cooperation Organisation, the Qvaitican Army has also began an invasion of Sporaltryus and Ryccia, asking other members of the United Front to join in this effort. Operations have consisted of ground armies and infantry divisions, with aerial support from the Air Force and amphibious support from the Marine Corps.

Positions of all forces in Sporaltryus as of October 15

Despite initial advances by the combined forces of the Resentinian and Kringalian militaries and the additional help of the Karnetvorian and Sedunnic militaries, the Sporaltryan line has reached a stalemate. In contrast, the fight has been considerably more influential and fiercer in the Ryccian theatre, where Farengeto and Qvaitican forces have been joined by incursions from Zadiner and Liberum Hominus in Terra, following an attack by Ryccian rebels on the former. It has been reported that an operation from Hammerstar is underway to protect historial sites in territories controlled by the Ryccian rebels.

With overwhelming military force from the Southern Cooperation Organisation and the United Front, Ryccian rebels under the banner of a National Coalition have expressed a willingness of transfer control of their nuclear arsenal to the Organisation, though they still appear to be very much committed to fighting Qvait. In turn, the Resentinian Royal Army is negotiating the peaceful transfer of nuclear warheads from Sporaltryan rebels.

Feranth is the legendary dragon that gave origin to the Ave

Sydney, Qvait - Hammerstar Paladin of Tourism and Circumnavigation Domenico Rucci has announced that all tourists arriving to Hammerstar will be given an Ave, a white cloth legendary for its symbolism. It is an invitation to leave greed and ego aside and instead embrace the culture and beliefs of Hammerstar.

Multiple stories explain the origin of the Ave, but Paladin Rucci referred to the story of Feranth and the Farmer. It is about a white dragon that terrorised a village, until a young farmer confronted it. When he accidentaly splashed it with special water, Feranth turned into a beautiful woman called Fermelitthique. In order to keep her in human form, the farmer strapped a piece of white cloth with the water to Fermelitthique.

While enjoying herself in the village, she did not notice that the knot holding the cloth was slowly undone, and so villagers where horrified when she turned back into Feranth. Both her and the farmer were hit by arrows, but she made sure to cure him by placing the cloth soaked in water on his wound. Though different endings abound, Paladin Rucci said he likes to think that the essence of Fermelittique was revived and eventually found the farmer, both living happy for the rest of their lives.

Paladin Rucci has not yet clarified who would provide the Aves or when they would begin to be distributed at airports and seaports. However, recent reports indicate that Kringalian company Green Textiles has made an offer to the Hammerstarian Government. Details surrounding the offer are unknown at this time.

Kringalia and Hammerstar aim to Maxima

Mission Control in Castle Air Force Base

Broadside, Kringalia - Director Clara Stokes of the Kringalian Space Exploration Agency sent on October 12 an offer to the Hammerstar Space Programme for both agencies to cooperate in matters of deep space exploration. Since Hammerstar had recently placed into orbit the Penne Space Telescope, Director Stokes requested access to it in exchange for the placement of Hammerstar-designed scientific instruments in a probe to be sent to either Maxima or Minima.

Paladin of Astronomy Amurritum Hunabatum responded favourably to the request and expressed hope that both nations would exercise reciprocity with all findings made as a result of space exploration. In a subsequent communication, Director Stokes invited Paladin Hunabatum to attend the first stone laying ceremony of the new agency headquarters at Castle Air Force Base.

Kringalia has recently sent two unmanned probes to Maxima. Pioneer 1 was designed to fly by Maxima and immediately return to Pacifica and was primarily meant to test the ability of rockets to launch probes beyond low orbit. Hermes 1 was subsequently launched and contained a greater amount of scientific instruments, including a medium-range imager and radiation detectors. It was set on a deliberate course against the surface of Maxima after conducting five orbits around it.

While little is known about the recent progress of the Hammerstar Space Programme, it is known that it has plans for deep space exploration, and recently proposed to KSEA that planning begin for manned missions to Maxima.

A Mathematical Man, Part 2
A Biography of Connor Walsh, President of Kringalia

Connor Walsh is the 40th President of Kringalia

Private Connor Walsh hated his early years at the Oscar Hansen Military Academy. He had enlisted right at the end of the economic boom and his classmates resented his privileged upbringing in Crown Summits, always the richest and most exclusive of all twelve states. He would later say that he spent night after night wondering what he had got himself into, seeing the loathing from his classmates and most of his instructors. He was found trying to desert several times in his first year and he even succeeded half of the time, meeting with his girlfriend or simply wandering on the road.

Things changed in 1969, when he met Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Casey, recently appointed to oversee discipline at the Academy. After a few detentions, Casey saw the potential in the young recruit and instead decided to take him under his wing, giving him assignments instead of detentions. Walsh began seeing the military as an opportunity to serve like he always wanted without giving up his passion for mathematics. He sumerged himself in the theory and practice of military strategy, becoming the youngest recruit ever to have a thesis accepted. He wrote on possible strategies to combat the growing nationalist militias in Tolsen, the same strategies that were used a decade later to defeat them.

Walsh eventually graduated fourth in his class with the rank of Lieutenant, but was quickly promoted to Captain after his squad received the top scores in the annual evaluations. He served in that position for two years and then received the routine promotion to Major. It was during this time that President Sebastiano Moretti reluctantly decided to deploy the military to fight the Forza Nazionale terrorist group, and Major Walsh found himself serving on the frontlines at Centro dello Stato, where the most gruesome battles took place. In 1976 he was given a temporary commission as Lieutenant Colonel, where he spent the better part of the next five years.

In June of 1981 he wrote an exasperated letter to Lieutenant General Casey, now the head of all forces in Tolsen, criticising the ineffective fight against the terrorists. Ever his mentor, General Casey chose not to discipline the Lieutenant Colonel and instead invited him to present proposals for more effective strategies. Colonel Walsh submitted his old thesis, which made its way to the desk of President Scott Fowler. Impressed with the tenacity of the young soldier, President Fowler commissioned Walsh as full Colonel and made him head strategist for the 5th Army, which was assigned to Centro dello Stato.

Colonel Walsh implemented his military strategy and expelled all nazionales from Centro dello Stato in six months. He spent the next three years implementing his strategies in all cities of Tolsen, until President Christopher Johnson declared victory in 1984 and publicly commended his contributions. Walsh was promoted to Brigadier General and named Head of Recruitment for the prestigious 5th Army. Inspired by his mentor, Walsh earned a reputation for detecting promising new recruits and ensuring they found a way to exploit their own potential, being responsible for recruiting the three most recent Commanding Generals of the 5th Army.

He was promoted to Major General in 1988 while serving at the Combined Strategic Command and reassigned as Executive House Military Liaison, becoming very close to the outgoing President Johnson. Following her inauguration in 1991, President Elizabeth Rodgers named Walsh the Commander of the 5th Army with the rank of Lieutenant General and three years later reassigned him to Head of the Combined Strategic Command, tasked with coordinating military strategy and war scenarios between all three armed services.

General Walsh went on to become the longest serving Head of the Combined Strategic Command, serving for four years and completely reviewing military strategy, which had been kept since the times of the terrorism wars. He issued a directive mandating that strategy be reviewed every two years and updated if necessary and is credited with being the driving force behind the easing of relations between the Army and the Navy.

By 1998 Lieutenant General Walsh was recognised in most government circles as a war hero and applauded for his genius at military strategy. Following the retirement of the Commanding General of the Army, President Rodgers received hundreds of letters from both the Army and the Congress to appoint Walsh to the position, and she eventually agreed.

A full General now, Walsh felt at the top of his career. He had the prestige and the time to follow his passions. In 2000 he decided to finish what he had started and amazed everyone by becoming the most senior military officer to attend Crownsville University, finally earning his degree in mathematics. He also took a course on software engineering and pushed for greater funding to enable recruits to receive technical education beyond simple military training. Under his watch, the Army became a more professional institution, moving away from the years of the terrorism wars and spearheading technological innovation.

General Walsh was an open-minded man, but he was wary of Tolsian-born politicians, due to the previous unwillingness of President Moretti to commit troops to fight the nazionales at a time when they would have been easily defeated. President Stefano Vannelli was aware of that and therefore had a tense relationship with General Walsh. However, the latter was still very popular among the military, and so once again there were repeated calls to give him the ultimate promotion.

Connor Walsh was appointed Chairman of the Joint Chiefs on 12 May 2004. His parents attended his promotion ceremony and were visibly proud of his accomplishments. As further proof that he was not any ordinary general, he famously broke protocol and went to hug them right after shaking hands with President Vannelli. Still, his success was destined to be cut short.
