2016 Peruvian Presidential Election
#11

A candidate with 1.9% of the vote intention will be allowed to leave prison (*sighs*) to attend the debate tonight.

Oh man, you guys would've laughed so much with some parts of tonight's debate. Some of the candidates were so over the top. Tounge

Gregorio Santos kept talking about how he would reclaim Peru's electromagnetic spectrum. As Res told me, maybe he plans to claim part of the Van Allen Belts. Tounge

He and Veronika Mendoza were in favour of a greater state intervention in the economy and expressed their intentions to make a new constitution, Santos explicitly saying he intended to eliminate the constitutional mandate for a free market economy. Miguel Hilario and Ántero Flores-Aráoz claimed to be "pro-family" and "pro-life" and Flores-Aráoz said same-sex couples already had access to wills and insurances, so there was no need for greater protections. Alejandro Toledo had really bad preparation, so he always talked way beyond his two minutes, and was always cut off by the moderators.

Keiko Fujimori was alright, and clarified she didn't approve of her father's crimes. Alan García was very calm and focused on his proposals, in the face of Fernando Olivera, who spent his entire debate time criticising him, instead of talking about his own proposals (literally, he only spoke 3 minutes about his proposals). Kuczynski spoke clearly, stayed on the message and felt confident with what he was saying. His only mistake was reading his introductory remarks.

Overall, the debate was rather boring in terms of ideas. It did have some incredibly funny moments with Santos' electromagnetic comments, Toledo being cut off and Olivera wasting his entire debate time. If you speak Spanish, please waste some time and watch this video. xD

Both Fernando and Alan are horrible, as I see in that video.

I'm curious, why do you say Alan is horrible? I'm not judging (most Peruvians will agree with you), I'm just curious about your reasoning.

Just look at his proposals! Army in the streets?! Death penalty?! Accused of crime by Fernando?! Sure, he might have some meh-ish-almost-to-good proposals like that one of the taxi drivers and such, but he's too extreme!

The other guy is very conservative, or so I think. I think his party is christian democratic(maybe against secularism), will have to search that, and he was very repetitive. His education spending proposal is good, however.

Ah, I see where you're going. I wouldn't go as far as saying Alan is horrible, since he had a rather good government in 2006-2011, but I definitely share some of your concerns. I disagree with using the military for law enforcement (there is a very serious case of organised crime in Peru) and reinstating the death penalty. Personally I'm still voting for Kuczynski.

Election Day!

Voting starts at 8AM EST (-5) and closes at 4PM. As is already traditional, presidential candidates organize breakfasts with their families, campaign teams or particular groups of people, with the press showing part of the breakfasts. Since polling is banned in the week before the election, the first polls will be shown at 4PM, as soon as voting closes.

Keiko Fujimori is the frontrunner with over 40% of the vote, below the 50%+1 needed to avoid a runoff. Pedro Pablo Kuczynski is second with around 20%, closely followed by Verónika Mendoza with a difference of less than 1%. Many Peruvians are worried Mendoza will follow the Venezuelan model and the state-driven model of the 1970s, while opposition to Fujimori has grown fiercer, with many claiming that her hypothetical victory would be a return to the corruption and authoritarianism of the 1990s. Many say Kuczynski is the only able to beat Fujimori.

I'll keep updating as the day goes on.
