Myanmar/Burma Historic 2015 Elections
#1

You might or not heard it in the news: it is a historic time for Myanmar, also known as Burma.

The Southeast Asian nation is holding its first fair elections after 50 years of almost uninterrupted dictatorship- either by Ne Win or the military(I wouldn't call the 1990 elections fair because the military did not recognize the results, and established another dictatorship).

The NLD is expected to make huge advances in this election, and maybe even sweep the floor with the ruling, military-backed USDP in Parliament.

What is your opinion on this?

I am very excited. Even though I had heard almost nothing from Myanmar/Burma, the NLD can be the key to a new nation for them. I want the NLD to win.

And, maybe, who knows? Maybe now the Rohingya will get citizenship! And a fair nation will be Myanmar's/Burma's future!

If the NLD wins, the military will just declare martial law again. They know they can get away with it, so they'll just keep doing it.

I don't think so, although it is a possibility. They have 25% of the seats for them, they control key government ministries and Im sure they don't want that yummy investing to go away, neither they want the West to isolate Myanmar again.

But then again, what do they care?

Still, I have hope. And Im sure millions of Burmese hope for a bright future too.

Nope as I am aware of, but I am aware of that 40% of all seats in Myanmar's/Burma's Parliament have been claimed, mostly by the NLD. As I said, the NLD is sweeping the floor with the USDP.

I still don't believe that an authoritarian government is going to give up its power without a fight. I can't think of a time when that has ever happened.

Maybe, just somehow, this will be the first time such an event happens.

I still hope.

Are you talking about just Myanmar or any authoritarian government?

In Myanmar it has definitely never happened, but authoritarian governments willingly gave up power in Chile, Argentina, and every eastern bloc country except Romania (those are the ones that I remember).

I was thinking of Myanmar and the rest of the world, but RandomGuy just gave some countries in where it happened.
