The default theme is a theme used on random forums throughout the web :p
It's kept the default theme just because it's always going to be maintained by the software developers, it's really easy to edit since it doesn't have a million custom moving parts, and plugin developers don't always take into consideration any other themes when making their plugins (see the notifications on Square). There are customizations we can make to have a more personal touch, but nobody has really put time into doing that yet. It's just important to remember that the more you customize, the more work there is whenever you upgrade the software, install a plugin, etc. So whoever flavors the default theme will need to be willing to update it whenever necessary.
