How was it political? There wasn't an event named in the lyrics. No nationalities. No people. How would it be political?

The song was an old ballad about the removal of Tatar people from Crimea by the Soviet Union in 1944. The connection to the modern political situation in Crimea is implicit, but not subtle and the singer even said in an interview that it was about 2014 as much as about 1944. It is just about the most political Eurovision song in years.

Everything that was just said. There is no way you can say that it was not political.

You don't need to explicitly mention events for a song to be political. You can talk about something without actually stating what that something is.

I can provide an example like what Sam has said, if people need it.

I would also like to add that I am incredibly fucking happy over Ukraine's victory.

My favorite show! I don't think Ukraine intended on being political this year. I was rooting for Latvia and Lithuania, two parts of my heritage, but also great songs.
