1st Great Council of 2016

With the current vote count at 17-1 in favor of the Working Group's draft SPN is ready to call the election for the Working Group Draft. Voting is expected to close in less than 3 days. This coming week's SOR will be looking at this new charter in detail as well as the upcoming elections.
Above all else, I hope to be a decent person.

Voting has Opened

The election has truly begun in earnest now as voting opened in the small hours of the morning (GMT) and many citizen-legislators of the South Pacific have already placed their vote for each of the six positions.

At the time of writing, the visible count (bearing in mind that legislators may choose to PM the Vote Collector, instead) looks as follows:

Prime Minister:

Drugged Monkeys - 3
Farengeto - 8
Abstentions - 0

Minister of Regional Affairs:

Roavin - 11
Sam111 - 1
Zak6858 - 1
Abstentions - 0

Minister of Foreign Affairs:

Punchwood - 2
Sandaoguo - 11
Abstentions - 0

Minister of Military Affairs:

Imkihca - 11
Abstentions - 2

Chair of the Assembly:

Awe - 7
Belschaft - 6
Abstentions - 0

Craziest Person in TSP:

Gordon Freeman - 2
Qvait - 3
Resentine - 2
Abstentions - 1
Other - 2

As the above results show, there are some interesting trends.  Roavin, Sandaoguo and (unsurprisingly) Imkihca all have clear leads in their respective elections.  Farengeto also has a strong lead in the vote for Prime Minister, but the gap is much narrower here than with the other three.  The closest races so far are for Chair of the Assembly, with Awe in the lead by only one point, and for Craziest Person, with Qvait in the lead by one point and a range of only three points in total.

Currently, only thirteen legislators have voted publicly: less than half of the usual number of active participants in any TSP election, so it's much too early to call any of these.  There really is everything to play for and, as voting does not close until 20:00 (EDT) on 14th June, there is plenty of time for candidates to make one last push in their campaigns to secure the pivotal votes they need.

LC Election Vote - End of Day One

As we near the end of the first day of voting, Belschaft is still the clear frontrunner with a running total of nine (9) votes.  Second place is now tied between The Derpy Democratic Republic of Herp/Gordon Freeman and Aramanchovia who have received five (5) votes, whilst third place is tied between Punchwood and [nation]Erinor/Seraph, both on four (4) votes.  This, after an interesting day with a number of votes switched, an endorsement for Aramanchovia and Erinor/Seraph from Belschaft and what appears to have been a bloc vote for Punchwood by members of the forum-side political party, the Alliance for the Preservation of the Coalition (APC).

Two more days of voting remain, during which time a number of nations are likely to join the World Assembly and try to achieve the necessary influence to allow them to vote.  Whether more existing WA nations are likely to vote is hard to tell, but a request has been made for a region telegram informing all nations of the current poll and the requirements to vote in it.  If that telegram goes ahead and a substantial number of nations become involved as a result, the current picture could change radically overnight.

Breaking: SPN now projects that Belschaft will win one of the LC seats. More analysis from Seraph tonight.

LC Election Vote - End of Day Two

Once again it has been an eventful day in the gameside poll for the Local Council election.  As reported earlier by Omega, Belschaft has a clear lead with twenty-three (23) votes and we are confident that he will secure a place on the Council.  Who will join him, however, is far too difficult to call at this stage.

Currently, second place is tied between four candidates, each with eight (8) votes: Aramanchovia, The Derpy Democratic Republic of Herp, Erinor and Punchwood.  Two of these candidates will probably make it onto the Local Council, but just which two remains to be seen.

This situation has arisen after another day of fresh voting and tactical vote switching and it is likely that a clear result will only be had once another round of vote switching has taken place.  Another interesting feature of this election has been the extent to which it has galvanised new nations to join the World Assembly - a requirement for voting - and the resultant endorsement sharing spurred on by current delegate Tsunamy's regular shoutouts for new WA members.  Many of these new nations seem to have flocked to Belschaft, a side of effect of his strong reputation, perhaps, or his frequent Regional Message Board (RMB) activity.  Equally the focus of candidates like Belschaft and others on increased democracy and democratic engagement for gameside nations is likely to have been a big part of his success.

SPN would like to be able to make predictions about how this last day of voting will go, but with the current results, anything is possible.  The only certainty is that it will be a closely fought battle and that tactical vote switching may be the key to success.

At this point in the election, with less than three hours to go, SPN would normally want to have called at least one more successful candidate. With Belschaft still miles ahead with twenty-eight votes and Erinor/Seraph and Punchwood tied with twelve votes each, that simply isn't possible.

There was some talk between a few nations of engineering a tie so that a second poll might take place and so that a kind of reverse 'instant-run off voting' (IRV) system might effectively be implemented If this believe it would allow those nations who vote in both polls a greater democratic stake in the Local Council as a whole. It's not perfect, but some see it as an acceptable solution until the game allows the possibility of multiple votes in one poll.

APC chair, Omega was nonetheless pleased with the efforts of his party to boost support for Punchwood, an APC member and the candidate endorsed by the party.

With all this going on, this is going to be down to the wire...
