History Lesson: The Beginnings of the Coalition
brought to you by Erinor

Birth of the Coalition
On the 2nd June 2003, the Game Created Region of the South Pacific did something dramatic and, if not unprecedented, it was certainly uncommon.  Former delegate, Killer Monkeys had been working on a new website and forum for the region which was not part of the NationStates internal forums and though he had been elected delegate through the endorsement system alone, a new delegate was to take the stage having been elected by the nations of the South Pacific.  The new delegate was Goddessness.  The new state her ascendency inaugurated was the Coalition of the South Pacific.

But this fledgling community was not without its demons.  Only the previous month the South Pacific had already experienced its first coup, after the nation of New Ali managed to get enough endorsements to knock Killer Monkeys off the top spot.  New Ali stayed there for three days before order was restored.  It was the first coup, but it was certainly not going to be the last.

Coup de Glitch
Sadly, the exact timing of what happened next does not appear to be recorded in the historical archives of the South Pacific, but sometime after the 2nd June and before the 18th, a NationStates game glitch occurred which caused Goddessness to lose around 400 endorsements (a staggering number compared to today’s figures) and though game mods were contacted, nothing was fixed.  Instead, the nation of The XYZ affair took advantage of the situation and stole the delegacy.  Almost immediately, key members of the Goddessness’ recently formed Coalition government were banned from the region.

Thankfully the nations of the South Pacific were not prepared to put up with this second coup and nations like Tsunamy and Kyoto Likes Qute Boys rallied for help and many new nations joined TSP to oust the usurper, including Desert Rose, who went on to take Tsunamy’s role as editor of the South Pacific Independent News and LadyRebels, who would go on to be the first delegate to last for more than a few months.

The XYZ affair’s coup ended on 18th June with The Fathoms Below taking the delegacy, but stability was a few days off still, as Fathom’s nation was, purportedly, hacked and more ejections followed. Order was only fully restored when Alpha_C claimed the delegacy in late June and managed to hold out until mid July.

It was during this time that the Coalition moved to a new set of forums to help reconstruct the region and from this point onwards our historical records become much more reliable.  In many ways, it seems that this was the first test of the new Coalition’s democratic strengths: a baptism of fire for the region, one which would set the pattern for many years to come.

Legends walked amongst us
Goddessness would go on to be delegate once more, holding it for just over a month in 2006, but her legacy in the region is much stronger than that.  As one nation said in a visitor spotlight interview in 2014, reflecting on the past, “Goddessness … left a huge hole in NationStates when she left”.  She remains one of the legendary figures of TSP history.

LadyRebels also left a huge mark on the region, becoming delegate at the end of July after a few short terms by Garylandia and Gatren and ultimately holding the position until the end of October, then holding it again after the MATT-DUCK from the end of December right through until Sseptember 2004 - an unprecedented feat, especially considering that she encountered a fair amount of distrust during her first delegacy.  She faced accusations that her previous affiliation with the Atlantic Central Command, a group of known raiders, was ongoing and that she was, in fact, making a deal to hand the South Pacific over to them.  The personal attacks failed, however, and LR is remembered with fondness by those who knew her and as the interactions on the old Zetaboards forum show well.

The more things change, the more they stay the same...
Looking back at the old posts, especially as one new to NationStates, I find that the strengths of the community are the same as those I see in the region today, from the defence of LadyRebels to the tributes to MATT-DUCK after his tragic car accident.  The coalition may have been around a long time, as far as internet communities go, and it has seen many changes and many more times as tumultuous as those at its conception, but it retains a character of openness, welcome and democracy that was there right from the start and that, it seems, is as good a reason as any to stand up and celebrate today.

PRAPA Started
26th July, 2003; by Tsunamy

The ‘Pacific Regions Alliance for Protection and Aid’ has been founded. Geomania, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs has announced that the East Pacific and the West Pacific have joined the South Pacific in the PRAPA. No response has been heard from the North Pacific and the Pacific.

Geomania also named Greater Akania as the ambassador to the East Pacific and its delegate, 1 Infinite Loop. Geomania has also named Canate as the ambassador to the West Pacific and its delegate, Norion.

South Pacific Attacked by the Elite Forces
27th July, 2003; by Tsunamy

On July 27, 2003, a minor conflict turned into a major conflict within the South Pacific. Fisheringman was using obscene language on the South Pacific Message Board. After being warned twice by LadyRebels [the delegate - ed], he continued to use much obscene language and a vote was begun to see if he should be ejected.

He claimed that many nations telegrammed him in order to vote for him to stay. When he was told that those nations had to announce this on the message board, nations began to stream in from the Elite Forces [region] to defend him.

Fisheringman was announced as performing voting fraud and ejected immediately. While it is regretful that no accurate vote could be taken, for the security of the region and its ejection process, this needed to be done.

Decision: August
August 17, 2003; by Geomania

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Decision: August. A special edition of SPIN.

As you may know, the August SP elections have rolled into their third and final day. So far, we already have two winners. Desert Rose retained her position as the secretary of Justice, running unopposed. Dick van Dyke became the secretary of Intelligence after Imrie, his predecessor, decided not to run again. I'm happy to congratulate both of them.

The first election on the ballot, which is for the position of secretary of Foreign Affairs, has me, Geomania, who was appointed to the position by Tsunamy after he resigned, running against Greater Arkania, who is currently the South Pacific's Ambassador to the East Pacific. Greater Arkania, who at one point, was only trailing Geomania by one vote, now trails by 9 votes (he currently has 7 votes, or 30% of the vote) while Geomania has 16 votes (70%).

Next up, we have the election for the secretary of Defense. The incumbent, THE MATT-DUCK, is challenged by Katie Miyake of Bejita-sei, who was also his opponent in the July elections for secretary of Defense. At this moment, THE MATT-DUCK holds a 4 vote lead with 14 votes (58% of the vote.) Close behind, with 10 votes (42%), Katie Miyake is holding steady, as was the case in the July elections.

The election for secretary of the Region (State) is in a dead heat. This must be, by far, the most interesting race in the election. The incumbent, KISS FANS, has 10 votes (50% of the vote), while his opponent, political newcomer Coral Islands, also has 10 votes.

Vice President Bistmath and Aurellis are in another political battle for the Vice presidential seat. Unfortunately for Aurellis, Bistmath is winning, with 15 votes (71% of the vote). Aurellis has 6 votes, or 29% of the vote.

Well, that's about it from the SPIN. Tsunamy will be here to announce the winners of the elections later this evening.

History Lesson: Fudgetopia's Legacy
brought to you by Roavin

No history of the South Pacific would be complete without mentioning the longest-running Delegate, who benevolently guided our region for an astounding record of 1276 days. Fudgetopia was Delegate from July 7, 2006 to January 3, 2010. As fate would have it, much information of her reign is lost in the mists of time due to forum crashes, leaving regional archeologists clueless to many details that may shed light on her ascent and historical tenure.

Founded just after the the Coalition, Fudgetopia had long been a well-liked and respected member of the South Pacific. She had been in the DSP (Defence force of the South Pacific), the first military of the region, and had subsequently held several offices, such as Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Secretary of the Region, and Secretary of Intelligence. How she finally came to be Delegate on July 7 of 2006 is unknown. What is known that she declared non-intent to run for delegate on June 4, 2006, just over a month prior to becoming the Delegate afterall. We can assume that she surely didn't expect to become the longest-serving TSP Delegate by far.

Of course, three and a half years of Delegacy aren't without challenges. After nearly 6 months in office, Fudgetopia found herself in a bind. Due to a forum crash, the laws of the region were lost, and the nation Cherque Farm was rapidly gaining endorsements. In an incredibly brave step, Fudgetopia briefly declared martial law in the region, ejected Cherque Farm, enacted an endorsement cap, and prohibited challenges to the Delegacy. In her usual manner of utmost transparency, she clearly laid out exactly what she was doing and why she was doing it, ending her statement with this inspirational message:

Please note that this is a temporary, if extreme measure. This region means a lot to me, and I will do my utmost to protect it, it's laws and my people - especially my friends and those whom I have fought alongside to keep it the free, fun and sage region we know. I've been here a long time, and seen many come and go, but those who know it best are those who have put a piece of themselves in. I am protecting it for you.

Looking back, many might assume that she received some backlash to this measure, but this was not the case. The community fully supported her decision, trusting her to do the right thing (which she did, of course). And it's exactly this that defines her legacy in our region - beyond her generosity, her general kindness, her contrasting capacity for well-meaning sass, her apt sense of sarcastic humor, and her incredible likeability that led the region to celebrate every birthday of hers as well as the 555th and 1001st days of her delegacy, it's trust that stands at the core of what Fudgetopia has meant and continues to mean for the region. Without an immense amount of trust, a nation cannot be the democratically chosen Delegate of a region for well over a thousand days, or receive the full support of the community for decisions made during very trying times. Her legacy of trust continues to this day - in fact, Fudgetopia was the first person Tsunamy contacted during the regional conflict in early 2016, and when asked why, Tsunamy simply stated "Fudgie was — and is — the most trusted person in the region".

Announcement; regarding Martial Law
January 2, 2007; by Fudgie

Dear Nations of the South Pacific,

Last night I found out that a nation called Cherque Farm had slipped through our intelligence net and was amassing endorsement at an extremely fast rate.

He had managed to climb to 275 endorsments, which was 81 % of my own count, so swift action was necessary.

There was no time to question his motivations and wait for his response. Further, he was not eligible for delegacy under the Law of Succession, and there was no other way for him to fall back to an acceptable amount of endorsements in a timely fashion.

Considering the above arguments, I saw no other choice than to eject this nation from the region.

As you are all well aware, the recent invision crash has destroyed many records of our laws and our history. There is no up to date safeguard for the delegate, leaving my position rather vulnerable, as the law we had no longer exists.

Therefore, effective immediately, the following restrictions on endorsements will be in place.

There is now a 50% cap on endorsements. Violators of this cap will be given one chance to either drop below this level or stop gathering before they are ejected to the Rejected Realms. The only exemption will be the Vice Delegate Elect.

There will also be no challenges to the delegacy at this time. Consider your moves carefully, as should it be discovered you are making plans to take the delegacy, you will be ejected.

This interim law will be in place until a full Law of Succession is up and running. Already there is a proposed law up and ready for discussion and vote here. This interim law will be effective IMMEDIATELY, and will be in effect until the new law is ratified by the assembly.

Once the new law is passed, this temporary law will be finished with.

The South Pacific decides...On Half a Government!..
March 27, 2007; by SPOT News

The polling booths have been open now for just over 3 days and a steady trickle of voters have been seen milling around the Town Hall...But they have only been able to vote for 3 candidates out of a possible 5 as there are no candidates for MoR (Minister of the Region) & MoFA (Minister of Foreign Affairs)...

Our exit poll seems to suggest that candidates Geomania (Minister of Security), Eastwales (Minister of Justice) and Kloister (Prime Minister), all seeking re-election, will be successful...SPOTs intrepid reporting team garnered the following comments...

'I really expected a bigger turnout.'
'I almost got knocked over by that tumbleweed over there.'
'Oh! Is that what we were voting for. I thought we were finally going to be rid of Conrad Crooner, the rubbish one from the reality TV show'...

With the results of the election seemingly not in doubt, the attention has turned towards the Delegate and who she will nominate to fill the vacant positions...It is unlikely that Caer Rialis and Tsrill will be tempted to resume their duties, as both have stressed a strong desire to step down from Cabinet for the short while, at least...

Attention will almost surely be on those members that have served in Cabinet before and are currently in a position to accept the call to serve...Mavenu, Htz3, KingJ, DickvanDyke, ParrrrTay and Polkstreet are names heading the list...

The newly formed government will surely have to address the clearly apparent apathy towards politics and democracy in TSP...Will this resurrect the calls for a move away from the constitutional monarchy style of government towards more of an authoritarianist dictatorship...

It's only going to get more interesting...Stay tuned to SPOT for the best news coverage...

Delegacy Challenge Fades... Contenders Withdraw...
March 4, 2008; by SPOT News

The South Pacific has seen two challengers for the Delegacy come and go over the past few days. The DOOP and Thonex (aka Vrtbovska Zahrada) declared their intentions to formally challenge Fudgetopia, the long standing Delegate of the region, with neither seeing their campaigns through to a conclusion.

It is believed that The Ministry of Security became aware of both challengers large number of ‘tarts’, (the common term used for describing the act of eliciting endorsements from fellow UN Nations), and had been under close surveillance for some time.

The DOOP caused some consternation to members of TSP, through citing their wish to postpone their campaign until additional challengers had declared their intent. A failure by The DOOP to fully understand the workings of a Delegacy contest and resulting security implications of such a statement led to a swift end.

Thonex, a far more engaging candidate, certainly stimulated more questioning from the members. To which they responded with energetic riposte. However, the fate as befalls many challengers, Thonex could not adequately convince the members of any clear advantages in them replacing Fudge. Add into the mix concerns over the raider/invader past of Thonex and the fact that they were holding down a Cabinet position in The North Pacific, members were quick to jump on the clear conflict of interest issue.

Both challenger’s UN Nations are no longer in the TSP.

Fudge’s reign as Delegate (607 days) is of course a matter for the members and they ultimately decide on who holds that office, through the time honoured standards of honesty, trust and faithful service. Something that any newcomer harbouring wishes for will have to take on board.

It’s not that TSP are an ‘Old Boys Club’. That could not be further from the truth. Members truly value friendship and the bonds of trust that subsequently develop when time is taken to get to know one another.

Joining TSP and expecting to wield inordinate amounts of power immediately is just something that is not going to happen. The members see the sense in not allowing that to happen to a region they have worked long and hard to forge.

History Lesson: Defeat of Devonitians
brought to you by Roavin, with significant help from Ryccia

Early 2011 was a peaceful time for the region. [nation=short]Southern Bellz[/nation] had been Delegate for a little more than a year, and the South Pacific was earning its positive reputation as the "party region". There hadn't been a coup since 2003, and the last serious attempted coup had taken place in 2007, leading to a relative carelessness with regard to regional security. At the time, Southern Bellz had around 100 endorsements, a dangerously low level for a Feeder Delegate. Many potential invaders took notice of this situation, and soon an unknown nation called [nation-short]Devonitians[/nation] started gathering endorsements by sending a seemingly friendly telegram to the region:

"I've endorsed you as a show of friendship and good faith, and would be grateful if you would endorse me in return."

It was a simple request that many well-meaning residents at the time gladly fulfilled. Within 36 hours, Devonitians succeeded Southern Bellz as Delegate of the South Pacific. After apologising to the region, Southern Bellz swiftly regrouped with [nation=short]Fudgetopia[/nation] and other trusted members to launch a counter-offensive. The first coup in 8 years had begun.

Having seized the delegacy, Devonitians quickly began a massive propaganda campaign to retain his position, which soon arose suspicions that a very experienced and well connected player was behind the operation. At the same time, the West Pacific declared war on the Coalition, claiming that the region was stagnated, going as far as drafting a World Assembly condemnation of Southern Bellz. Residents were caught in the crossfire of the rhetorical war; resident [nation=short]Darakin[/nation] later recalled "logging on to a flood of telegrams and uncertainty".

The Founderless Regions Alliance, a defender organisation then led by Arch-Chancellor Unibot, took issue with the coup and moved troops into the South Pacific, in support of Southern Bellz. At the same time, various raider groups also moved in to the region to support Devonitians. However, his brief reign was not enough time to amass the influence needed to battle influence giants like Southern Bellz and Fudgetopia, so the conflict was brief and victorious - Southern Bellz regained the delegacy, and the region returned to the hands of the Coalition, after a mere 2 days of fighting.

Devonitians had a simple plan for the region. He was to remain delegate for no longer than a week, and in that time he would encourage others to gain endorsements, so that when he left the delegacy, his successor would have been voted in using purely gameside mechanics; a supposedly true representative of the region. However, his talking points differed significantly from reality. RMB posts that were even remotely favourable to the Coalition were suppressed. Nations that endorsed Southern Bellz or other regional leaders were ejected. Those permitted to gain high endorsement counts had been hand-picked by Devonitians. As it was later revealed, Devonitians was none other than [nation=short]Sedgistan[/nation], a leading member of the Founderless Regions Alliance and future NS Game Moderator. Among his hand-picked successors was fellow Moderator and renowned defender [nation=short]Crazy Girl[/nation].

This coup was a wake up call for the region, and soon after several reforms were enacted, based on the lessons that were learned from the experience. Soon after the regional military was revived, the government was reformed, and a new generation of leaders rose, led by the likes of [nation=short]Milograd[/nation], [nation=short]Hileville[/nation] and [nation=short]Belschaft[/nation], to begin the next chapter in our regional history.

Breaking news; Victory Parades held in the Capital!
May 25, 2011; by Fudgie

Chupa Associated Press

Victory parades have been held in the main street of Fudgetopia's capital, celebrating the recent victory of Southern Bellz, the delegate of The South Pacific.

The displacement of our esteemed delegate by hostile invader forces kept our Prime Minister, Stephie Fudge, working long hours into the night to provide troops for reinforcement, as well as contacting numerous friends and allies to show their support.

"Having held the position of Delegate of this region before, it really is a frightening situation to be in. Our South Pacific Assembly voted long ago on the rules and regulations for our region, and for someone to blatantly defy what we believe in and take over in such a manner is frightening.

I am relieved that Southern Bellz was returned to the rightful Delegate's position yesterday morning, our time."

When questioned about her desire to return to the position, our Prime Minister laughed heartily. "I have no desire to return to the delegate's position. I have done my time. I merely drummed up support in case of dire emergency. I have no intentions of leaving The South Pacific - and if I have accrued that much influence, it can be to the advantage of our region to stay put. I will keep my hand in regional politics, and will come forward if help is needed, but a return to any leading position? No."

Plans to extend the victory celebrations into a week long holiday have already begun, with carnivals and public celebrations across the nation in force. Plans have also begun to create a new national holiday, alongside our current holiday celebrating the original independence of The South Pacific on July 4th. The new day will be May 25th, and called Restoration Day. Plans have also started on a new scholarship in Southern Bellz honour at the Chuparian University in the Political Science area.

Reporting from Chupa, Adrian Smith for the Fudgetopian Daily.

Excerpts from Lampshade Edition of SPINN
May 30, 2011; by LadyRebels

I was happy to finally get Our Delegate Southern Bellz in a corner for a few words...

[snip]

When asked...So Delegate of The South Pacific how are you doing this day?
I'm doing fine, thanks for asking. In NS, I think our region is going on the right path, we are talking about sensible reforms, and I think it is going to lead to a better region overall.

If you had one thing to change about the way things go in NS with Delegates of the Feeder Regions what would it be?
I still think it would be a great addition to the game if they allowed players to give their influence to other nations. That way nations like Fudgie and myself can protect other lower influence TSPers when a rogue delegate comes along. On the flip side, if I was overthrown, and people actually wanted me out, they could donate their influence to get me ejected.

Now this is something that maybe someone could bring up on the NS forums...just a thought.

[snip]

Do you even want TSP to become the "Party" Region again?
I think TSP will always be the party region. This region isn't about cut throat politics, its about the community of The South Pacific. I think a lot of people from other regions like to dismiss us as laid back, when I feel it is more of the fact that we put this game into perspective with our real lives.

History Lesson: Defeat of Milograd
brought to you by Roavin

Milograd joined the South Pacific during the Devonitians coup to help liberate the region. He, along with a few others, liked what he saw in our region and decided to stay and become an integral part of the community. Quickly, he rose to be a well-liked and respected member of the community, participating very prominently in roleplay and in the government. After serving as the first Minister of Regional Affairs, in December 2012, Milograd ran for the Delegacy and got the position on Christmas of that year. In early March of 2013, he had some private matters to take care of and resigned his Delegacy, with care and support from the community. A month later, with those issues cleared up, he was reelected to the Delegacy.

On April 20, 2013, Milograd completely blindsided the South Pacific by disavowing the Coalition, instead instating the South Pacific Socialist Republic (SPSR) and beginning to ban massive amounts of nations, including the duly elected cabinet. The Coalition's forum was removed from the World Factbook Entry, replaced with a new forum specifically for the SPSR, and the following statement was posted and sent throughout the region:

The South Pacific marches forward as we attempt to free ourselves from the shackles of oppression that the tyrannical oligarchy has strangled the masses with for far too long. The proletariat has been held hostage by those whom control the means of production: oligarchs who have lopsided "influence". It is time for us to fight for our beliefs and reject this tool of oppression. This is a protest.

With both the Coalition-in-exile and Milograd rallying various allies for support, the stage was set for an epic battle for control of the region.

The Coalition took the lawful steps under our laws to recall Milograd and sue him in the High Court, therefore removing his legal standing as Delegate in its entirety. Long-time trusted member [nation=short]Fudgetopia[/nation] also joined the fight, willingly took a hit to her reputation by acting as a double-agent, gaining the trust of Milograd while having to endure the scorn of natives. The Coalition and its allies established the Southern Allied Command to battle against Milograd and his supporters.

Milograd's nation was controlled by himself as well as John Ashcroft Land and Mall in order to keep watch on any military and civil activities with 24 hour coverage. In the 10 days of the coup, over a thousand nations were banned and ejected from the region. Milograd also started a massive propaganda machine to shore up more support, but his true motives were transparent at a closer glance, as [nation=short]Ryccia[/nation] recalls:

I was founded in April 25th, 2013, in the beautiful tropical land that is the South Pacific. But, in my eyes, it wasn't so beautiful at all. It was civil war.

I aligned with the Commies, as I was a newbie back then. I thought of Milograd as a hero of TSP, establishing justice for minnows from a cruel, oligarchic regime that existed before. While I supported Milograd, I even TGed Torchwood, a guy who was campaigning for the Coalition and isn't active here anymore, to "give it up". I was called legendary by a fellow "comrade" back then.

It all changed, however, when I the banlist. When I saw that list, oh boy was I outraged. I questioned my support, and questioned it in the RMB. Fellow "comrades" back then told me that they were a cancer of the old regime, and that they needed to be eliminated. I stood by that, as I was still a loyal supporter. Then, even though I don't remember it much, and I think it wasn't incriminating at all, a post in the NS Forums made me suspicious. I questioned myself. Is this how Milograd really is? Banjecting TSP natives, and wanting to take over TSP for his own good?

I did what I had to do. Next, I TGed Hileville, and I turned.

After 10 long days of battle, the Coalition, represented by [nation=short]Brutland and Norden[/nation], rightfully took back control of the region. While Milograd's downfall was surely helped along by smart military tactics used by the Coalition and its allies, in the end Milograd was not able to sustain the support of natives, despite massive propaganda campaigns. The core values of our Coalition, the oldest democracy across NationStates, had won again. As with the Devonitians coup two years earlier, the aftermath found the Coalition making changes to strengthen itself, for example by instating a new Bill of Rights, and opened the floor for a new generation of prominent members.

REGIONAL UPDATE: The People's Revolution Continues Unabated
April 22, 2013; by Erusea (South Pacific Socialist Republic)

Three days have passed since the liberation of the region of the South Pacific from the snares of the oligarch regime. Our dear Beloved Chairman Milograd has victoriously repelled wave after wave of both internal insurrections of reactionaries and foreign mercenaries forces under the employ of the revisionists that struggle to retake the South Pacific in chains. By force of the unrelenting will of the now enlightened masses of the South Pacific, the oligarch remnants have undertaken their timely retreat to a new region of enslavement and servitude they deceptively call "Free South Pacific."

In any case, the departure of the oligarch remnant has been seen as a glorious victory for the Revolutionary forces of the South Pacific. With well over 250 endorsements, our Beloved Chairman securely holds the office of the delegacy for the people. Revolutionary Literature is similarly being published by regional minnows once silenced and oppressed by the deposed tyrants which sought to perpetuate their hold over the people. Harmonious Truths: Glorious Tales from the TSP Revolution, anecdotes regarding the experiences of the masses in the era of Revolution is now available online to the Public.

At roughly 23:45, our Glorious Chairman Milograd commenced the forced ejection of a grand multitude of reactionary sympathizers, actively working to destroy what has been gained by Revolution; progress - something the South Pacific has not known under the years of oppression by the oligarchs. We move forward towards a brighter future under the guiding hand of Chairman Milograd.

Statement from the Cabinet of The Coalition of The South Pacific in regards to the end of the Milograd Coup and victory on the home front

April 30, 2013; by Belschaft
As of minor update today The South Pacific is once again free from foreign occupation and oppression, and NationState's oldest and most resilient democratic government has been restored. This victory could not have been achieved without the efforts of dozens, if not hundreds, of people all of whom have played their own parts, big or small. Whilst you will all be hearing more from us over the next few days, we would like to take a moment to thank some of you in particular. Firstly, our allies; The North Pacific, Osiris, Europeia, The New Inquisition, Balder, Lazarus - your assistance will not be forgotten soon. Without your aid and diplomatic support we would still be under foreign occupation. The South Pacific has always been loyal to those who show us friendship, and you can count on our support should you ever find yourselves in need. Secondly, those friends of ours abroad who, though not bound by treaty, still came to our aid; The East Pacific, The Rejected Realms, The United Defenders League, Ten Thousand Islands, Land of Kings and Empires, Equilism, The Commonwealth of Crowns, Spiritus, The Founderless Regions Alliance, Ainur, Kennan, Kantrias, Canada... the list goes on and on. Thank you, you have all proved to be good and true to your word. Know that we are in your debt. Thirdly, the dozens of individual players who offered their support and assistance. You were the margin of the victory. Without your selfless contribution we would still be under occupation, still suffering daily purges of the native community. There is no complete list of everyone who came to our aid - many did so on their own initiative - but you all have our thanks. Fourthly, there are a few names in particular we have to mention; Biyah, Astarial, Eluvatar, Mahaj, McMasterdonia - the Southern Allied Command would not have achieved half as much in twice as long without you all. Fudgie, who volunteered to play the traitor. Your sacrifice was the greatest, to be defamed by those who should have been saluting you. A debt of honor is owed to all of you. Finally, the The South Pacific's native community. Even as hundreds of us were being ejected from our home by one who betrayed our trust, and foreign colonists were poring in by the hundred, you never gave in. You kept fighting. You kept everyone's spirits alive. We salute you. We will have a more detailed update out later, going over our plans for the coming weeks as we rebuild what has been destroyed. For now, we leave you all with our gracious thanks, and a promise; The South will rise again.

TSP Turns 10 and Conviction of Milograd
June 3, 2013; by Hileville

Downtown South Pacific...
SPINN offices were closed yesterday to observe Coalition Day, a day to celebrate the Charter, Coalition, and Government of the South Pacific. On June 2, 2003 the South Pacific passed its first Charter which created the longest running Democracy in NationStates. For the last 10 years the Coalition of the South Pacific has kept a very similar Democratic styling of Government. While changes have been made over the year the Democratic processes have remained. Members of the South Pacific sent out tweets and posted on the regional message message board celebrating the day.

Congratulations to the Coalition of The South Pacific and to its citizens for this decade of democratic example! #NSTSP10â
Kringalia ([nation=short]Kringalia[/nation]) June 2, 2013

New Government business was halted for the day with the exception of the Sentencing of known felon Milograd, who orchestrated a coup of the South Pacific back in April. When the verdict came down from the Jury citizens were delighted when he was found Guilty of Treason and Defamation while being found not-guilty of Fraud. His punishment is an indefinite banning from the region and forums of the South Pacific. Citizens quickly responded with praise to the Jury and the guilt being determined on 10th anniversary of the Coalition made the day even sweeter.

Coalition Day wasn't all excitement as members of the region took a moment to remember two former members who are no longer with us. THE MATT-DUCK and Christie are those members. Both hold a spot in the hearts of South Pacificans and on days like this are remembered for the times we shared with them. While no official events were held today, SPINN has learned that an event is being planned to either happen at the end of June or in early July to celebrate both Coalition Day and the next months Independence Day. SPINN will release details as they become available to us.

In other news...
Voting is underway on the enabling legislation that will allow for a Special Delegate Election beginning next week. The vote has an overwhelming amount of support. While the bill is required before an election can start that hasn't stopped hopefuls from finding running mates and preparing their campaigns. A slew of candidates have already announced and several teams have formed. Teams that have already announced are: Antariel/Helpful Whispers, Southern Bellz/HEM, Hileville/PenguinPies, Liberatia (Natan)/Iro, and Manonia/Ryccia. A plague scientists have coined Twitter is spreading throughout the South Pacific with many members joining. SPINN was the first to come down with the plague last year and it has spread through TSP and all those known to be infected are Hileville, McMasterdonia, Awe, Rebel-topia, Kringalia, and the South Pacific.

History Lesson: Hosting of the 2013 World Fair
brought to you by Kringalia

In its long history…
NationStates has hosted many different communities, each with their own particular way of playing the game. While some may like to play the invasion and defending game, others prefer to draft and debate WA resolutions, others like participating in regional politics, or roleplay as nations or individuals, or debate real life issues. These communities exist, but most of the time they don’t interact with one another, and in some cases they dislike or misunderstand each other.

This changed for the first time in 2005, when the East Pacific organised an event called the NationStates World Faire. In it, regions could apply for their own pavilions, and have exhibits of their culture and other activities. While reasonable successful, this World Faire was focused on gameplay regions, and largely died down after a short while, without anyone picking up the slack in the following years.

Fast forward to 2013…
...And the NationStates World Fair had been revived by Unibot and Todd McCloud. They had first organised it in 2012, and to great success, keeping the familiar pavilion scheme, but also including roleplays and various lectures relevant to the many different communities. For the second edition they aimed at being more inclusive and to mirror real life expos, and so they announced that the 2013 World Fair would be hosted by one region, to be elected through an online poll.

Many regions applied, submitting their own plans for what activities they wanted to organise as hosts, but the contest was eventually narrowed down to a single poll between the Democratic Socialist Assembly and the South Pacific. Minister of Regional Affairs Escade and Minister of Foreign Affairs Kringalia worked together to come up with a detailed plan of activities, under the theme of Friendship and Cooperation. When explaining the theme choice, Escade said the following:
We’d like to host the NS World Fair 2013 with the theme of Friendship and Cooperation this year. Without the cooperation and friendship within our region and amongst our allies we wouldn’t have been able to overthrow a vicious coup in April of this year. We’d like to remind NSers of how important and awesome it is to have allies and make friends across NS as well as how cooperation can lead to improved game experience.
Our region eventually won the poll and went on to host the World Fair. While we were not involved with most organisational aspects, since those had already been handled by the World Fair Committee, Escade did get to offer an opening speech and our regional venue was displayed first, receiving hundreds of visits and great reviews.

As one of the two people from the region with advanced access to the forum that the World Fair used, I still remember how exciting it was to be able to prepare the threads for our venue, which dealt with forum games, displaying our brand new regional map, introducing the military and inviting participants to use a game that QuietDad had coded into an IRC channel.  There was something special about preparing all that so attendees would have the best possible experience.

I readily admit that…
Our hosting of the 2013 World Fair was not a landmark event on the same level as the founding of the Coalition or the Devonitians and Milograd coups. That being said, I think there is an important lesson to be learned about this. At a time where we still were feeling the effects of the latest coup, one that had been devastating to our own perception as a community, we managed to both help organise a world event and also rise to the challenge with our own venue.

In a way, this was one of the first large scale cultural events that we organised in the post-Milograd era, and this experience paved the way for the more elaborate activities that we have organised since then. Beyond that, participating in the NationStates World Fair was really fun, a welcome break from the more serious and political events that had plagued our recent history, and we have made a point to be present in all successive World Fairs.

News from Back Then
In this segment, we are reprinting some noteworthy news article from around the time of our history lesson.

Proposal for the South Pacific
Early November 2013; by Escade

The South Pacific is one of the largest democracies in NationStates. We’re big and bold and like to have fun. We’re also extremely proud of our region’s democratic process and enjoy earth shattering debates on the meaning of life, a quick drink and some grub in the Lampshade Bar and Grill, and a little madness in our mornings.

Escade
Minister of Regional Affairs
The South Pacific

1) Specific Events/Activities/Stuff

- Quiz Show: All participating regions are encouraged to send one of their residents to represent them in the NS World Fair Quiz Show. Question categories range from pop culture, history, science, to NS rules and history. Prizes include the winning finalist and his\her region to be promoted with a sponsored message on the board.
- Debates: NSers love a good debate. We’d like to host a debating event where some of the best NS orators get a chance to debate the finer points of self-determination, the meaning of life, what is going on with Miley Cyrus, and cake or pie.
- Design Contest: Inspired by the 2012 Olympics design contest and the Google artistic contests, NSers are asked to submit a flag or logo representing what they think NS stands for.
- Fantasy NS Gladiator Games: A Hunger Games-esque competition with a twist. Potential combatants are divided into teams that are run by a coach\leader. Teams are pitted against each other (and include players across regions) in a tournament. The last player standing wins.
- Scored Sports Tournament: Football, baseball and hockey (other sports considered based on interest) tournaments.
- Flash Mob: To advertise and create interest in the NS World’s Fair, participants do a “flash mob” routine in various regions that permit it.
- Masked Ball: A roleplay in which “masked” nations enter with a date and intrigue, romance and mystery follow when the host is discovered to have been murdered.
- Warlords: A military roleplay in which players are given ten items to start with and must battle with those items through space and time.
- The World’s Fair Chronicle: NS has its fair share of characters and what better way to identify and highlight them then with a yearbook like chronicle? Awards can be given for many epithets including: Most Likely To Coup a Region, Party Animal, Happiest, Badge-Crazy, Craziest, Best Smile, Most Likely To Be Evil, and others.
- Gossip Girl: A tabloid magazine that covers the world fair from a particularly skewed perspective and even the most innocent seeming events are turned into affairs, conspiracies and alien abductions.
- The Reviews: NSers provide brief reviews of their favorite\least favorite films, books, games, TV shows, and other products.

2) What should this year’s theme for the World Fair be?

- We’d like to host the NS World Fair 2013 with the theme of “Friendship and Cooperation” this year. Without the cooperation and friendship within our region and amongst our allies we wouldn’t have been able to overthrow a vicious coup in April of this year. We’d like to remind NSers of how important and awesome it is to have allies and make friends across NS as well as how cooperation can lead to improved game experience.

BREAKING: South Pacific host for 2013 World Fair
November 17, 2013; by Awesomiasa

South Pacificans in jubilation at announcement of the region hosting World Fair

It's official! The South Pacific will be hosting the 2013 edition of the NationStates World Fair, tentatively from December 8-11. We here at SPINN, on behalf of the rest of the region, would like to extend an invitation to the NationStates community and fellow regional news networks, to join us this coming December.

Built on a theme of 'Friendship and Cooperation', it is hoped that this World Fair will foster stronger relations amongst regions in an atmosphere of fun and enjoyment.

See you there!

COPS II DRAFTING CONVENTION
December 16, 2013; by Unibot

The Convention on Off-Site Property Security treaty was first proposed and ratified by ACCEL and The West Pacific as a law strictly prohibiting forum destruction in response to Addarow's forum destruction of The Praetorian Empire's forum. It is easily one of the most famous interregional laws in history of NationStates Gameplay.

Many have suggested that COPS is in need of reform, therefore the NS World Fair will be hosting a convention to redraft COPS -- although last year produced several drafts, the three days of the celebration were not enough to spur a ratification frenzy. This year we hope to accomplish the goal of redrafting COPS.

Anumia and R3naissanc3r are the event organizers -- they'll be acting as speakers and helping to facilitate dialogue.
