Brexit
#21

It's very rare that a country votes to commit national suicide, but that's what Brexit it.

You have to admit, many didn't think of the results. Most voted because they want to restrict immigration. My dad supported it, but he could't vote, because he has been out of the UK for too long (still a citizen). He thought the economic and political troubles would be worth it. I believe that immigration needs tightening, but Brexit was dangerous. Hopefully it doesn't kickstart Scottish independence or a new version of the troubles, though.

Ausstan that's literally the most ironic thing I've heard. Your dad supports it (and ports supports the immigration tightening) but has immigrated to another country himself.

My cousin was in the same position, posting anti-immigration memes throughout the campaign, oblivious to the irony that he was a migrant working living in the UAE. (Oh, but of course he's British, so he's not a migrant worker, he's an ex-pat. Important distinction that...)

Expat is the correct term Smile . He also argues that Australia is effectively part of the empire, while Iraq, Syria and Sudan are not.

That is a joke, of course.

His main argument is that he came the legal way, with a passport, etc. He waited a year to get into the country, delaying his marriage and other plans. He doesn't like the idea that these people can get immediately into "his" country, without any documentation. My dad wasn't a strong Leave supporter, he only wants restrictions for Asylum seekers/refugees etc.

A past friend of mine is very right wing and opposes immigration, despite the fact both his parents are immigrants and basically his only friends are as well.

I think Australia should sort it's own people out before accepting new people. We have almost 1 million homeless people. Get them houses first. We have plenty of people who are poor, or with low living standards. Unemployment is rife. Indigenous people living in the Northern Territory have shocking living standards. Solve these problems before allowing others to enter.

P.S. Almost 1 million homeless may be an incorrect statistic. It was from a radical-left wing teacher I had, who was known for her "tweaking" of statistics. E.g. Oh, yeah 11% of Australians fall into LGBTIQ. The actual number is 1.1%. Also, according to her, 50% of teens have depression. I have nothing against LGBTIQ rights, or mental health issues, they are just examples of her tendency to give bad statistics. Seeing as 1 million is almost 4-5% of Australia's population, well, I doubt it.
