Brexit

Quite a number of those signatures are fraudulent, but I think even once those are removed there will be a sizable number.  Also, a majority of MPs were not in favour of Brexit and since the referendum result was only advisory they could rebel when any legislation has to be passed on this.  The Liberal Democrats are already saying that they'll campaign for the next General Election (which could happen a lot sooner than 2020 now) on the basis of getting Britain back into the EU (when we haven't actually left yet).  The SNP are threatening to block it in Holyrood, although, in fact, nothing they do in Holyrood could technically block something the UK passes as a whole.  And people are talking about the possibility that Article 50 of the Lisbon treaty, which states how a member state might secede from the EU, might never actually be triggered and that it's a poison chalice for anyone who takes up the Conservative leadership.

As I said, a trainwreck.

Well, they already removed 77,000 signatures when it had about 2.5 million, so it'll end up with with millions of signatures. As of this post, the FTSE is down 0.82% and the trend might continue in New York. Brexit is having a major impact in global markets.

Yeah, sorry about that folks. Perhaps all us Remain voters should have done more campaigning...

The entire thing has the potential to become a mess of history-textbook proportions.

It's too late now, but tomorrow I'll give my feelings on the subject.

So both houses of Parliament have finally passed the Brexit bill, meaning that the government now has the power to trigger article 50, which was supposed to happen tomorrow. It's not, however. The government are delaying until the end of the month now... More annoying, this means that the House of Lords has capitulated with respect to their amendments designed to protect the rights of EU citizens living in the UK. There is now no guarantee for them when the UK finally leaves.

And when the UK leaves it might remain the UK for only a little bit longer, as Nicola Sturgeon has begun the process of calling for a second Scottish independence referendum, and though I don't actually want Scottish independence, I can't really blame them either. Besides, the issues the Brexit vote brings about in Ireland already pose a risk to the Union, so I'm not expecting there to be a United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland for very much longer...

Maybe Ireland could finally be reunited once more.

You make it sound easy.

I mean, if Northern Ireland splits from the UK, that would be the logical step, because I very much doubt it could survive on its own, but I fear more bloodshed before any such action could take place.  That's the real danger, that the details of the Brexit negotiations will raise tensions in both the North and the South and the somewhat fragile peace we've enjoyed since 1995 will be broken.

I'm old enough to remember the end of the troubles, to have experienced a bomb scare and heard scarier encounters from others (including my brother, who had just driven to the top of a hill when a bomb went off at the bottom of it).  I've also seen how much the province has progressed, especially in the last decade or so, and I really don't want to see it fall backwards, but even now, before the real damage is done, things are getting less stable.  Sad
