Coup in Turkey

Well, yes, I do have to agree with you. There are exceptions. Sorry, my bad!

I'm going to challenge your statements by saying if there was a coup in North Korea, throwing Kim Jong-un out of power, the world will have been done a favor.

Going to have to disagree with you there. Unless the world knows who replaces Kim Jong Un it's more than likely someone more radical could replace him.

Plus we can't exactly trust the military considering what happened in Egypt and Thailand so I don't trust their announcement that they'll restore democracy in a timely manner.

It couldn't get much worse.

Last time I checked North Korea was not a democracy and Erdogan was not a mad dictator threatening to use nuclear missiles.

I think he's just saying that a coup can be an answer sometimes.

It may be a little late, but here's my opinion anyway.

Even if Erdogan is a power hungry a-hole, a coup is never the answer when there are democratic means available. Unlike places like Russia and Syria, Turkey is still a democracy, albeit one under threat and with numerous problems, and the government does not fully control all aspects of the country. When the country is a full dictatorship and the autocrat/autocrats in power control absolutely everything, that's when a coup can be an answer.

However, military coups are another matter. As someone who lives in a region (Latin America) that has seen countless military or military-led coups (my own country, Venezuela, has had at least 3), I can tell that when the military deposes a government, they usually keep power for themselves. I can only think of one time when the military of a country overthrew a government in order to restore democracy (my own country in 1958, when a faction in the military deposed dictator Marcos Pérez Jiménez, himself a general).

PD: Even if Erdogan's government is legitimate, purging tens of thousands of alleged opposition supporters from the civil service is still a bad thing.

Honestly, I'm inclined to at least hear out the people who say that this is something Erdogan's government helped along through the works, because the trend of his accumulation of power is fitting pretty neatly with it.

Yeah, this reminds me of the 1933 Reichstag fire. Just like Hitler did, Erdogan is using this incident, which he blamed on a convenient scapegoat, to purge his political opponents and eliminate threats to his power.
