2016 Summer Olympics

Day Eight has ended, so update time!

For Venezuela it was a shitty day, in my opinion. Three boxers competed today. The first one won his bout, but the other two lost. The second one, Gabriel Maestre, was the one with the most chances of bringing a medal, as he needed to win only one fight to progress to the semifinal; he lost to Kazakh Daniyar Yeleussinov. The third one was humiliatingly defeated by TKO in the second round by Uzbek Bakhodir Jalolov.

On the other hand, and I know somebody is waiting to hear this *cough*Ryccia*cough*, tennis player Mónica Puig defeated Angelique Kerber (Germany), to win Puerto Rico its first ever gold medal. She is also the first female Puerto Rican to win a medal. Congratulations to both Mónica and Puerto Rico!

Another Independent Athlete won a medal, this time a bronze. Mohamed "Mo" Farah (UK) successfully defended his gold medal from London in the 10,000 meter race. Jamaican Elaine Thompson defeated her compatriot, the defending champion Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, to win the women's 100 meter race.

Last but not least, Michael Phelps won probably his last Olympic medal, gold in the 4x100 medley event (accompanied by Ryan Murphy, Cody Miller, and Nathan Adrian), with an Olympic record for good measure. Something I forgot to mention is that Phelps had broken an additional record in Rio; most individual Olympic titles won by a single person. The notable thing about this record is that it was set 2,168 freaking years ago, in the Ancient Olympics, by an athlete named Leonidas of Rhodes; he was a runner who won a total of twelve Olympic titles (at the time, the prize being an olive wreath). Phelps has now fourteen individual titles.

I don't know what day we're on now, but Joseph Schooling won Singapore's first gold medal at the Olympics in swimming! We might win another medal in table tennis too.

Did you see that picture of him and Michael Phelps when he was younger? And then he went on to beat him for the gold...

Day Nine has ended, so update time!

This is a day of celebration for my country as Yulimar Rojas won the silver medal in the triple jump, beating the reigning champion, Olga Rypakova from Kazakhstan. The gold was taken by Colombian Caterine Ibarguen, making it the first time that two South American countries take gold and silver in the same event. We won a medal! Woo hoo!

Our basketball team lost to Australia, closing its participation in the games. Gymnast Jessica Brizeida López finished sixth on the uneven bars, with Russian Yulia Mustafina taking the gold.

In other news, Simone Biles won her third gold medal, easily beating her opponents. Great Britain, which had never won gold in gymnastics, won two thanks to Max Whitlock, who won in the pommel horse and floor events, all in a span of an hour and a half. The U.K. also won in tennis, as Andy Murray beat Argentine Juan Martín del Potro in the final.

Kenyan Jemima Jelagat Sunjong won the women's marathon. South African Wayde van Neekerk broke the world record in the 400 meters. Usain Bolt became the first person to win the 100 meters three times in a row.

And lastly, now that we're sharing pictures, this one is of my favorites;

This is South Korean gymnast Lee Eun-Ju, taking a selfie with fellow gymnast Hong Un Jong, from North Korea. This is why we make these Games. For moments like this one.

Not much, it seems.

Now, update time for Day 10!

For Venezuela, nothing really important happened, with the exception of the medal ceremony for yesterday's event (that I fucking missed due to I not knowing at what time it was to be held), and the women's hammer throw final, in which one of our athletes got into tenth place. That final was won by Anita Wlodarczyk from Poland, breaking the world record in the process.

Ruth Jebet from Bahrain won the women's 3000 meters steeplechase. David Rudisha (Kenya) defended his medal in the 800 meters. Shaunae Miller (Bahamas) won the women's 400 meters in a ridiculously close finish. Brazilian Thiago da Silva won the pole vault, in an event where the Olympic record was broken twice; first by his French opponent Renaud Lavillenie (who ended up getting silver) and then by himself minutes later.

In gymnastics, Simone Biles was unable to get her fourth gold medal, as Sanne Wevers (Netherlands) won in the balance beam.

No offense to the Americans here, but I'm legitimately sick of listening to "The Star Spangled Banner". Why the hell does the USA win so much? Geez...

Since my last update, a Venezuelan boxer advanced to the semifinals in his category, ensuring a medal, and just today two people qualified to bronze medal matches, one in taekwondo and the other in wrestling. To our chagrin, both of them lost.
