Top Story: Union becomes a Monarchy - Albert Hoxe crowned as Emperor Albert I, first nation-wide Constitution to be drafted

The Imperial Union of Kyrini, Irykia, the Siculite Islands, Valivory and the Ryccian Republics- A new era for the Union dawns.

[Image: WjAydDek8KVB_ajTMS0VjoMahESnkIzjJv_FroyE...9X4vYjSbfh]
Albert Hoxe, now Emperor Albert I of the Imperial Union.

After much campaigning and a referendum, all member states of the Union have decided that the Union shall become a Monarchy. And it did.

The Federal Congress chose it to be an Empire, symbolizing the strength of the now Imperial Union and befitting the fact that its territories are spread far and wide, or so many Congressmen say.

As a result of the new status, many royalist movements have disbanded, as they believe they have fulfilled their purpose. The few small groups that remain wish for an absolute monarchy.

The Monarchic Fever, as it is called, began when Qvait began to develop a monarchy. Somehow, the idea spread, possibly because many believe a monarch could bring more stability and a sense of unity among the territories of the Union, as many people in the Union don't even think of others outside their territory as fellow citizens. Rather, many treat them more like foreigners , since many view the Union as "an artificial country, poorly constructed and heavily patched with bureaucracy to cover the poor infrastructure"

The Republican opposition, however, was not happy. Some have taken to the streets to protest what they allege was a "sham, a fraud" of a vote. The Republican Party has also been founded, and its main goal is to restore the republican past of the Union.

The Royalists, however, argue that "if we didn't get a unifying symbol soon, we would fall. We have one now in Emperor Albert I" They have also pointed out that "democracy is still a core value to the new Empire"

In other news, the Emperor has called for a new constitution to be drafted, and to "stop relying on each other's constitutions, as we are one Empire, not separate countries".

A Grand Assembly has been called, to will last for as long as required. All people will be able to participate in the Assembly and bring forth their ideas via the Federal Congress or the internet, where they can either speak on the Grand Assembly or send their ideas via an e-mail account to be read out. It will be the Federal Congress, however, who retain final approval of the Constitution.

Chancellor Margaret Harrison | Defense Secretary Julia Burns | Foreign Secretary Avianna Aldridge

STOCKHOLM, UNITED KINGDOM — After being elected on the campaign promise of ushering in "an era of peace and prosperity," President (now Chancellor) Margaret Harrison is coming close to doing exactly what she had promised. Initially, she said that Qvait would see this era, but since then, she has extended that promise to the world, and has come closer with the unification of Qvait and Winston Island. However, the Chancellor is not alone in this venture. On 1 April, 2016, then-President Harrison officially enlisted the help of Vice President Julia Burns and Secretary of State Avianna Aldridge when the two were sworn into office one after another. After 1 August, Burns became the Secretary of Defense for the new United Kingdom.

Avianna Aldridge, Secretary of State
In terms of calmness, Secretary Avianna Aldridge leads the "Big Three" of Stockholm. Elected at the age of 27 in 2006 to serve as a member of Qvaitican House of Representatives, she spent her ten-year congressional career on the foreign affairs committee, always advocating a peaceful approach to conflicts. Furthermore, she was chosen by the Labor congressional leadership to be the ranking member of the subcommittee concerned with the country's relationship with Sporaltryus.

Several members of the House of Representatives, Labor and Conservative, have said that, if it were not for Aldridge, Qvait would have decided to "permanently destroy Sporaltryus" in the winter of 2014. Thomas Dee, the former Conservative Chairman of the Sporaltryus subcommittee, said that he would have allowed the Qvaitican Defense Forces to "burn Sporaltryus to the ground," but Aldridge was insistent on salvaging Qvait's relationship with Sporaltryus.

Before she was sworn in as the youngest Secretary of State in Qvaitican history, Aldridge promised that she would bring back then-Secretary of State Giovanni Giletti as one of her advisors. As of 1 April, Giletti is the Deputy Secretary of State, subordinate only to Aldridge in the Department of State. Despite being on opposite ends of the political spectrum, Aldridge (Labor) and Giletti (Conservative) agree that the country should exercise soft power to influence other countries rather than resorting to coercion and other forms of hard power.

Julia Burns, Secretary of Defense
Of the three most powerful women in Qvait, Secretary Julia Burns is, at first glance, the least likely person to be expected to be diplomatic. Secretary Burns became a controversial figure during the 2016 presidential election when she was selected by then-Congresswoman Margaret Harrison to be her running mate. Before she became a politician a few years ago, she was the first and, to this day, only female to be a Neptune operative. Arguably the most secretive contingent of the Qvaitican Defense Forces, Neptune Group was the special operations branch of the Qvaitican Navy, but is now part of the Royal Defense Forces.

Chief Warrant Officer Burns participated in numerous highly-secret special operations, many of which have yet to be declassified. However, the only known aspect of her military career was her involvement in bombing Sporaltryan warships during the War in the South Pacific in the fall of 2014, which sparked concern from Conservative congressional leadership, some of whom called for the declassification of her entire military career.

Despite this, Vice President Burns showed her skills as a diplomat when outgoing President Aaron McBane selected her to replace former Southern Cooperation Organization (SCO) Representative Jonathan Brennan in the effort to persuade the organization to repeal certain provisions of Resolution 003, which expelled Qvait and barred the country from rejoining the organization after the Carlson leak. A month and a half later, the SCO voted 5–0 in favor of repealing the provision that barred Qvait from rejoining the organization.

Margaret Harrison, Chancellor
The central figure of the "Big Three of Stockholm" is none other than the Chancellor herself. She became the country's first-ever female President on the promise of ushering in an "era of peace and prosperity," and she continues to pursue this vision. However, Chancellor Harrison's vision draws a stark contrast from that of her father's foreign policy. In the 1970's, her father, Jonathan Ambrose, was the President of Qvait, and his foreign policy was driven by hard power.

Even though both Ambrose and Harrison received high marks in their times, they did so for different reasons. In the 1970's, Qvaiticans had little care for the interests of other people and had only looked out for themselves. When Ambrose was President, he had looked to neighboring leaders and militaries to remain loyal to South Qvait instead of supporting the communist North Qvait. It was an open secret back then that the Ambrose government would bribe foreign leaders and military generals so they would continue to support South Qvait.

Instead of being like her father in terms of foreign policy, Harrison took a softer, more peaceful route. Chancellor Harrison studied her father's foreign policy and decided that exercising hard power was "a dangerous game," and so takes a friendly approach in managing international relations. Her father said in an interview in December 2015 that "[she] would look at the map and say which country is an ally and which is a non-ally." Instead of using the word, enemy, Chancellor Harrison would describe particular nations as "non-allies."

Chancellor Harrison holds the belief that when someone considers another to be an enemy, it is hard for the two parties to "look each other in the eye and say that something has to change." However, when one considers another as a non-ally, that non-ally can either be a neutral party or an enemy, and that is what makes her willing to sit across a table from people who are not particularly friendly.

The Big Three of Stockholm
As one unit, Chancellor Harrison, and Secretaries Burns, and Aldridge form the "Big Three of Stockholm," a nickname given to them by the media. In the executive branch of the government, they are the three most powerful office holders (excluding the office of Vice Chancellor, held by Elena Reese). Separately, fellow Labor and Conservative politicians and, in Secretary Burns' case, soldiers, have said that each member of the "Big Three" is benevolent. Admiral Daniel-Beckham Cutter, the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff who has had the opportunity to get to know all three women on the political stage, says that they are "gentle, caring women, yet strong at the same time."

Articles from La Rapière, Hammerstar’s National Newspaper

Steampunk Day.
Aisyah Lombardi, La Rapière.

Vinci, Hammerstar - On the 17th of May 2016, the Technocracy marked the start of Steampunk Day, a Hammerstarian national holiday in honor of a legendary republic which existed in the first century AD, Steamlannde. The day was started by the nationwide playing of the tune in the City of Vinci, followed by various city fairs, which were erected to mark the celebration.

The largest celebration was held in the city of Vinci itself, which used to stand as the capital of Steamlannde. The festivities in Vinci were coupled with performances and parades from the famous Hammerstarian circus troupe, Cirque du Soleil. A group of steam engines and steam-powered vehicles also paraded through the streets, including the Neo-Steamlanndian military.  The former Steamlanndian colony had flown in various unique steam-powered vehicles from giant spiders to giant humanoid robots. Blimps and dirigibles also graced the skies and there was a performance by Steam-powered airplanes overhead.

Street sellers also graced the streets of Vinci, mostly selling leather goods, weapons, cigars, cheese and steampunk mechanical equipment. Various Neo-Steamlanndian meals have also been sold in the city at a reasonable price and the visitors of the festival leave laden with leather clothing and mechanical equipment. The holiday festivities have increased tourist influx by 20%.

His majesty King Byron Brunel VIII of Neo-Steamlannde had also attended this event in honor of his ancestors.  With him were his two royal children, Prince Aro Brunel and Princess Mona Brunel. The Technocracy of Hammerstar remarked that, with this event, the alliance between Neo-Steamlannde and Hammerstar shall grow forever sweeter.

Swirijaya Opens its Doors.

Anastasia, Sriwijaya - The Nautical Emirate of Sriwijaya has officially opened its doors to the foreign world. Experts have agreed that though it is a bold move, the language barrier, as well as the conservative stance of Sriwijaya has made them quite defensive in communicating with foreign nations. Instead, they have constructed a well-built communication with its Protector, The Anarcho-Pacifist Technocracy of Hammerstar.

The Emir of Sriwijaya and The Hammerstarian High Ambassador to Sriwijaya, Rupert Van De Fjord.

The Emir has also recently ordered the application to observer status in the Southern Cooperation Organization, though some people in the assembly halls expressed their discomfort because the Emir had chosen a non-English speaker as its representative. The Amirah as the current Foreign Emissary of Sriwijaya, has expressed that Malay and Arabic interpreters appointed by the Emirate shall be provided until an official interpreter is supplied by the SCO.

Other than the introduction of the Emirate to international politics, travel is also open for foreign tourists with a monthly quota until a more sophisticated airport can be provided. Moreover, placements of battleships and military factories have been built in the territory of Sriwijaya with the aid of Hammerstar. The Hammerstarian navy will place several of their military assets in Sriwijaya, whilst attempting to mediate between Sriwijaya and neighbouring nations as they negotiate further military contracts.

New Nation, Ancient Heritage: An Introduction to the Democratic Republic of Erinor

The last few months have been a tumultuous time for the South Pacific, but amidst the chaos, the civil war, the suffering and the aggression, we have also seen a new nation enter the world of large-scale international politics.  With the inauguration of progressive leader Yena Yamera-Hyudo as Ura’sia, or First, the Democratic Republic of Erinor has made the bold move of stepping out from her relative isolation to make herself known to the larger powers of the region.  New Embassies have been opening up in Erinor’s historic capital of Ciria and Erinoran embassies are cropping up in major capitals across the South Pacific.  There have been important international meetings held behind closed doors and a successful request has been made to the Southern Cooperation Organisation for the Democratic Republic of Erinor to be admitted as a member.

This may make it seem like Erinor is truly a new nation, one which has just popped up out of nowhere, but this could hardly be further from the truth.  Not only is Erinor no stranger to international politics, having dealt with close neighbours and distant allies in trade agreements and minor diplomatic issues for centuries, but the nation itself has been around on the Western Continent since ancient times.  Arutyarca Erinead, the Kingdom of Erinor, which became the Democratic Republic in 1927, can trace its origins back to the 12th Century and the rule of quasi-legendary king Syarkho Qenarid, but the Erinoran people, and the Serevan minority who live mostly in the Autonomous Region on the Island of Sereva, can trace their history back much further than that, with evidence, dotted across the beautiful landscape, pointing to some of the oldest civilisations in the South Pacific.

The Mena Parlid, Erinor's parliament building, with the Khardar Tyavod mountains behind.

Consequently Erinor has a rich culture with many myths and legends which have in turn inspired many works of literature and poetry written in the rich and beautiful language of Erinor, Syaqin aren. These have, in turn, inspired symphonies, tone poems, operas and oratorios as well as many great works of art.  Their history has also gifted them with a unique architectural heritage, with the capital city of Ciria, in particular, full of splendid works fusing the Neo-Gothic and Neo-Varsan styles adopted by the Kingdom in the 19th Century, with older gothic and traditional Erinoran architecture also common in the Old Town (Cata vanyea).

The Democratic Republic of Erinor has much to offer the South Pacific and with a new progressive government willing to bring the country out of the shadow of a long period of conservative rule - the legacy of internal struggles during the 20th Century - she is a nation with a bold future ahead of her, perhaps best summed up by the Erinoran national motto, attributed to Syarkho Qenarid himself, ‘Aras, Vrassas ir, khur Tyisici, Erineas cujide’, ‘We will build Beauty, Truth and, above everything, Hope’.

And Finally...
A Brief Editorial from the South Pacific Journal of Science

In last month’s issue, we published a thought-provoking article by Syarkha Hyuda-Avero, Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Akhorn, Erinor, entitled: The Many Worlds Hypothesis, or How to Alternate History.  The article proved particularly popular and its contents were reported in popular science magazines across the region.  The resulting influx of correspondence, however, has forced us to make the following, brief statement.

For those who have read too much science fiction, and who had questions pertaining to conspiracy theories about the nature of the universe, we have the following answers:

Time travel is not possible.  Neither can one transport oneself between worlds via a wormhole.  There exists no screen that can let you see a parallel universe.  We have not encountered any walk-ins from other realities.  The many worlds hypothesis is not held together by a paint-speckled rose in an abandoned lot.  You will never wake up in another reality when you bang your head.  Yes, it was almost certainly just a dream.

[Image: 9baUq1_tfmWVj1AEAKd-nFNGt2VqCGY5vAsEWMrf...VWmHnOal-j]
No.

For those, however, who asked questions of a more practical nature, we can only say this:

There is no limit to your imagination.  If you believe there are other worlds than these, then we suggest you write them.  Indeed, as fans of counterfactual thinking here at the South Pacific Journal of Science, we could even recommend a group that’s starting up soon that you might like to join.  It’s called the South Pacific Alternate Fantasy History Society and they hope to encourage imaginative young writers like yourselves to come up with alternative, fantastic histories for our fine region.  You should be able to find them in a place called ‘Treasure Island’ sometime soon.  Why not look them up and see if you can add something exciting into the mix?

Finally, to the man who sent us a picture of his pet cat and claimed that it was an alien from outer-space, sent to take over the world and use us all as slaves to burrow into another reality where cats are gods and we live in glass cages as their pets, we can only say this:

You’re probably right, but keep taking the pills, just in case.

The note for the Qvaitican article is unnecessary as it still applies to canon.

I've shared the link on the RMB, since,to the best of my knowledge, no one needs to be registered on the forums to see this.  I did intend to make it a dispatch also, but the amount of formatting involved rather put me off in the short term.  If I have time later in the weekend I'll give it a try.

Anyway, I'm hoping it might encourage some new people to join in roleplaying.
