Well judging on the rise and fall of things, Venezula's situation is to be expected.

Empires come and fall within these few steps

Step 1: Start out as a fledgling new middle power with benign intentions

Step 2: Rise up as a potential superpower

Step 3: Get drunk with the power

Step 4: Become too overconfident that you are too big to fail

Step 5: You slowly start to fail

Step 6: If its a democracy at step 1, a dictatorship will be formed. If already dictatorship at step 1, dictator becomes more insane and does stuff he previously would not do

Step 7: Things are good temporarily, you ain't a power, but you are in a good place

Step 8: Sudden unforeseen problem

Step 9: VIVE LA REVOLUCION !!!

Step 10: You are no longer great, just a once proud nation, within the likes of most former European Colonial empires

Step 11: Slowly degrade and rot into the history books

Venezuela's pretty much at that place where Maduro is becoming a dictator...I really can't see the situation going anywhere good in the near future.

I am very scared of Venezuela, any conflict from an area of relevance could affect my mom's paycheck as a middleman trader along the world to Asia trade. Also, muh trip visitng south america this november just got harder. Would applying to be Red cross volunteers be helpful enough ?

As one of TSP's South Americans, I can assure you that the region is very peaceful and stable, and Venezuela is a rather extreme case. South America is a beautiful region, and very much worth the trip.

That gives me and my family much relief. At least I can enjoy Argentinean Roasted meat, Bolivian Salt Flats, Brazillian Futbol and favelas, Columbian Coffee, Ecudorean Premium grade Cocoa, Paraguayan Yerba Mate, Peru's high altitude, Surinamean Violent history, Uruguay's high whiskey consumption, The Falkland Islands' ability to piss off Argentina, French Guiana's ESA Facility & The South Goergia and the South Sandwich Islands' beaches. But as for Venezuelan women and chevism, that might be a problem... considering the Chevism has failed.

Oh, Peru has so much more than just high altitude. It deserves a whole trip just by itself. Smile

We actually have lots of interesting places here. It's sad that the crime rate has scared away any tourists considering making a visit.

Boy, crime no scare me. My country has the third highest bullying rate in the world. I will see them all no matter how many narcos cartels, corrupt policemen or instability there is. I know what to do to avoid getting shot or jailed. Heck even if the whole continent is on rhetorical or literal fire, I will bring a Fire extinguisher or riot armor, a sign supporting the side that I believe in and an AK47 with a thousand clips of rubber bullets.
