Crisis in Venezuela
#1

Heyo folks. Today, I'd like to talk about a situation that very deeply concerns me.

Over the last year, since the Anti-Maduro opposition took over the Venezuelan National Assembly, tensions between Maduro and the Opposition have come to a head in the last week. The National Assembly voted to declare that Maduro "couped" the government, and attempted to have a petition for a referendum vote. However, The Venezuelan CNE(Consejo Nacional Electoral - National Election Commission) and the Venezuelan Supreme Court declared that the petitions being used by the Opposition were fraudulent, which has led to massive opposition protests in Caracas calling for Maduro to step down.

Maduro, and his government, have fought back against the claims with both force and words, and while claiming to want open dialogue with the opposition, stating that the protests were a part of an attempted coup with the help the United States and compliant foreign media. The #2 of the Socialist Party has said that any companies joining the protests would be promptly seized by workers and the military.

At this point in time, the opposition are holding a political trial for Maduro in the National Assembly, and have most recently called for a 12 hour strike. This puts supporters in a difficult situation, as food prices have spiked since Maduro took over in the wake of Hugo Chavez's death, leaving them with the choice of either feeding their families or staking it out against Maduro. Regardless, the opposition has also promised to march on the presidential palace next week.

Personally, I hope the Opposition wins it out by peaceful means. Maduro and his kind should've been gone a long time ago, there is no question there, but the day-to-day situation for your average Venezuelan is difficult enough as it is, and I'd hate to imagine what would happen if this escalated to a civil war. I think this can end bloodlessly, and I would like to see Venezuela make a return to democracy.

Just an update since: South American Leaders have been talking about the Venezuelan Crisis at the Ibero-American Summit, with UN Secretary General-Elect Antonio Guterres saying that there would not be a solution without some constructive dialogue between The Democratic Unity/Anti-Maduro Opposition and the Government.

Huh, I had forgotten this thread existed.

You should see the "commentators" on State media. They are spinning the issue around to make the Opposition look as the aggressors, and calling them hypocrites for not condemning abuses by their supporters (read as, DEFLECT! DEFLECT!). There was even a dude on TV saying that he had been stabbed and hit by the staff in the Capitol and that he had the right to be there (in a fucking public institution, with the objective of assaulting people! If he was in fact wounded, that bastard deserved it). *sigh*

I love this country, but sometimes I wish I could leave this hellhole and escape to Canada or something. This is a fucking disgrace.

There has been a trend of nationalization in Venezuela since Hugo Chávez came to power. This is very similar to how Vladimir Putin managed to consolidate power.

Quote:
In 1998, there were 24 television channels nationwide, of which only 3 were public (and they were non-biased). In 2014, there were 105 TV channels, but only 46 percent were private. (If one looks at local channels alone, the decline in the share of independent media is less steep, from 50 percent in 1998 to 39 percent in 2014.) State-owned channels now account for 17 percent of all television channels (14 percent if one looks only at local and regional television channels). In addition, under chavismo a new category emerged—"communitarian channels," located mostly in smaller cities, accounting for 37 percent of television stations in 2014. communitarian channels technically are supposed to be independent, and many of them struggle to assert some autonomy vis-á-vis the state. But only pro-government channels receive state funding and support. Given that there are few other funding sources, communitarian channels inevitably end up complying with state directives.

I can tell you that I don't like the current state of affairs in the United States and that I also sometimes wish to move to Canada, mainly because they offer universal healthcare, but I plan on staying to fight every time an election comes around. Assuming there is no change, a presidential election is supposed to occur in October 2018 in Venezuela. If Maduro's government cancels all future elections, revolution is the only option for Venezuela. Hopefully, Trump won't get the U.S. military involved. If any change of government occurs in Venezuela, it must come solely from the Venezuelan people. It must come from you.

Yesterday was the "election" for the Constituent Assembly. If you wonder why did I put it in quotes, the Opposition boycotted the process and pro-government candidates were the only ones on the ballot. Plus, there is no reliable way to see if the vote was fair, or how many voted (Government and Opposition figures are widly different).

And why did the Opposition boycott? Well, the last time this was done, by Chávez on 1999, he did a referendum before starting the process, asking if the people wanted to reform the Constitution. Maduro simply skipped that step, and went straight to nominating candidates, without consulting the legislature (which is mostly symbolic at this point). It is obvious this is a way for Maduro to give more powers to himself while dissolving the National Assembly.

Now, we'll have two rival legislatures (the Assembly has already said it will disregard the vote). Things can only get worse from here.

I swear I'll make a house party the day the Opposition takes the presidency and restores proper democratic order to Venezuela.
