A Drop in the Ocean Flash Writing Competition.
#1

One of the many opportunities that being part of a large region affords you is a chance to improve your writing skills, whether as part of collaborating on a WA proposal, working on your RP nation, or participating in journalism. In the spirit of this, we're opening up a flash writing competition for you to show off your writing skills!

There are several ways you can enter:

1) Write a short article of between 500 and 1,000 words on how you got involved in your region.

2) Write a short piece of flash fiction no longer than 500 words on the theme 'A Drop in the Ocean', interpreting that in whatever way you desire.

3) Write a short piece of poetry, either formal or free verse, on the theme 'A Drop in the Ocean', which you can also interpret as you like.

4) Write a short piece of poetry, either formal or free verse, about your region.

Entries can be posted in this thread and need to be submitted by 21:00 GMT on Thursday 22nd December.

Good luck, and get writing!!

A GIN-TSP-EXCLUSIVE
by Johannes Kirschbaum (intern) for the festival "A Drop in the Ocean"

How is GI-Land ivolved in TSP? A short look on the history of GI-Land

GI-Land - in TSP-canon a nation located in the north-west of TSP in a rainforest-biome, out of TSP-canon a nation with european climate at the Atlantic Ocean.
It was founded around two months ago on NS, but around ten years ago in the real life of GI-Land's Leader Gianluca IV.
In the last ten years, many things happened. As for example the political system, the "dictatorial democracy" was invented or Atlantis was found somewhere in the (TSP-canon) South Pacific Ocean and annexed by GI-Land.

Problems with the Atlantics occured, because they felt opressed after their annexation by the GIs in 2010.
Their language wasn't forbidden, but it was not considered as official language, even though, more than 50% of the GIs could speak Atlantic, but had to learn German.
Maybe you ask yourself: "What is Atlantic?"
Well, Atlantic, or in Atlantic "Atlantig", is the language of the Atlantics, the inhabitants of Atlantis. It's a germanic language and you can even learn it, when clicking here.
The conlang was invented by the player of GI-Land only a few weeks ago, to make his nation a bit more interesting and deepen it, having the older nations of Erinor and Sedunn as a type of "rolemodels".
By the way, Atlantic gets second official language of GI-Land as of the 1st January 2017 now.

Anyway, GI-Land's engagement in TSP isn't only the invention of another conlang though. It has also legislator-status and is a World-Assembly-Member, votes on every poll and answers (almost) every question, that is getting asked by the government, even if he is in discussions about TSP (yet) more a reader, than a participator.
Plus the nation, or more the player of the nation (short as of now: he), is always open for roleplaying. Only a few days ago, he started his first official TSP-roleplay with some other nations, i.a. Seraph (Erinor), Hammerstar (Huawan) and Frost.

TSP's players can newly inform themselves of the current political situation in GI-Land through "GIN Online", a GI-Landian news portal and until now, it got only positive ratings (if we see over the fact, that the thread only contains of one article until now).
If a nation wants to have diplomatic relations with GI-Land, it can engage those via an embassy in GI-Land. This can be done via an embassy program, GI-Land started pretty early in its engagement in TSP.
According to rumours, Erinor and GI-Land want, as they are two neighbouring nations, engage some bilateral relations at some time.

And now imagine, that this is only the start. Everything listed in the text above, was the result of GI-Land’s engagement in TSP in the last two months. Gianluca IV. definitely wants to do more in this region and with his country, wants to show more facettes, try to explain his nation better to the players of TSP or, if you’re already here on the forums, dear TNP’ers, also to the players of TNP (or other regions).
The base of this engagement will always be his ten years of experience in “private roleplaying” and players like Seraph or Qwert, that managed, to build up their nations in a stunning scale.
This is, what GI-Land wants to be too, later on. A nation, you’ll notice, when looking on and thinking about TSP.

Signed
Gianluca IV

A Drop in the ocean 1 - By Rikuchar

A drop in the ocean isn't very big
It doesn't need to be though.
Have you ever thought how big you are
in the big ocean of humanity?
You aren't very big either.
One could say that humans are little drops.
They flow and slide and slip about
not really seeming to follow any natural pattern
yet unlike drops, you can always know
where humans will land.

(this post is horrible ;-; )

A singular drop.

Small, indeed - but how it shakes the seas and trembles the earth.
Whenceforth did this power come from?

How could this tiny insignificant part - one of many, a lone fragment of millions, billions, trillions - command such impact, such influence?

It's in the small details. It's in rain pitter-pattering your windows. It's in shorelines lapping at your heels. It's in the water you drink, the spray of your lawn sprinklers and the splashes of the pool.

It's in the enormities. It's in flash floods swallowing homes. It's in tsunamis breaking cities like playing god. It's in the shipwrecks, the snowstorms, the drownings, the natural forces snuffing out human life like chaff.

It's in the cohesion, the bonds between each individual drop - molecule - atom that pulls them together, sums them up into enough of a force to be reckoned with.

No, it in and of itself is next to nothing, but.

Every little bit adds up and up and up ---

A drop in the ocean, but the shockwaves shape the world.

(-Sankami. I tried, okay.)

Drops
by FrozenTopHat

Simply put;
We are all just drops in the ocean.
Meandering about our fluid lives,
we sway left and right,
oblivious to the hundreds, thousands
millions, billions of
people;
Other people, the same as us,
following the same waves,
not plotting but
Following the course to
distant, wild shores.

Yet, some think that each drop
is unique,
that each drop
follows its own path,
plots its own course,
decides who it is and wants to be.

We are all but drops in the ocean;
all human, yet all unique in
our desires,
our paths,
our lives.

The Inevitable Realization
by Izmedu

Isolated in our shells of life, protected from death
We're born in this intrinsic belief

The world is our oyster
The ocean is limitless
Unbound, untamed, unlimited

As you grow older, all that seemed so pure, so infinite
Was a mere illusion inculcated by self-valorization

The world was my oyster
The ocean was limitless
Unbound, untamed, unlimited

In many ways, you realize you are part of a system
That is larger than you will ever hope to envisage

The world was never mine
The ocean is limitless
Unbound, untamed, unlimited

We're mere parts of a larger symphony of movement
All bound to each other as single droplets
Crashing and colliding with each other
Unbound, untamed, unlimited
To the extent in which we cooperate

You're 'a drop in the ocean' as they say
Not a singular being born out of cloth
But a moving part tethered to a limitless schema
Unbound, untamed, unlimited
To the extent in which you work within

This is a realization that dawns
In the moment you realize you are part of a larger whole
Like those large, sweeping, and majestic oceans
You feel bound, you feel choked, you feel... limited.
But... It's one of those inevitable realizations.

The world is ours
The ocean is limitless
Unbound, untamed, unlimited

Only now was I able to finally, finally reply here. When the contest is finished. So I had to bother Seraph and sent him my piece, but I'm going to post it here too for posterity.

Plink. Plink. Plink.

What’s that sound – yes, that’s right. Be it from the sewer, from the rain, or from the leaky faucet you always swore you’ll fix one day, it is the sound of a drop of water.

Ah, such a nice, gentle, peaceful sound. It is quiet. Tranquil. Unobtrusive. It is so small, so insignificant that we barely pay any attention to it. After all, what is a drop to the gush that we can unleash with a simple turn of the faucet? It is even less special, when compared to the roaring tides that our world contains. What more to the endless amounts of icy comets, soaring around our universe, driven by forces that we bags of meat and water cannot begin to comprehend?

And you would be absolutely right. It is nothing. A mere drop has barely any power. It cannot move on its own, and it must be guided by outside forces. Even then, it is weak, so very, very weak.

Yet, it is the same thing that makes you want to finally stand up from your couch and grab your toolbox to fix that damn faucet. Have you ever wondered why would you spend time trying to repair it just to get rid of some drops? Of course not. Because you already know that you did it because it was grating on your nerves. The tiny drops, guided by gravity, impacted the bottom of the sink enough times to annoy you. They kept at it, never giving up.

Guided by gravity. Huh, haven’t I mentioned something like that? Yes, guided by outside forces. Now you’re probably wondering what is the significance of that phrase. Water is like a baby. It must be given direction, purpose, to do anything of any significance. Only when it has instruction will it act. Up up up! No need to speak. I already know that you’re going to say “But that’s water as a whole, not just drops!”

Well, let me ask you.

What is water made of?

No, don’t give me the snarky answer of hydrogen and oxygen. This isn’t chemistry class!

It’s made... of drops.

Water, one of the most essential, most influential substances in the world, is comprised of those tiny little itty bitty drops, all working together, all doing their same job. In teamwork and utilization of their individual contents, drops can either utterly wipe out an entire city or sustain a mother and her child.

Now tell me.

Do you still feel like a mere drop in the ocean?

After careful consideration of all of the entries, the judges have decided to declare Bluie Gamer the winner!

All of the pieces were excellent in their own way and it's clear that the 'A Drop in the Ocean' theme and poetry were most prominent, but Bluie's stood out through their use of structure and imagery to create the most compelling version of the argument.

Thank you all for participating and here, again, is the winning piece:
