Any Ice Fishers out there?
#11

OOoooooooh.

Ok.

Well no, I haven't Ice fished and I would want to. I've been to a frozen river in the Chinese city of Tianjin, and saw people ice fish, but never did it.

As Huawan however, we do ice fish in the rivers and lakes of the country, especially in the northern region of the country where the elevation reaches heights of over 7800m and other than farming and animal husbandry, the people fish in the icy waters that often froze. However, the variety of fished fish are not as diverse as your nation

I'd have thought GI-land would have some possibilities? I'm close by in Hungary land and it doesn't happen every year. I was on a side arm of the great Danube. Even the Danube has 30% ice cover so far and we haven't gone above 0C all month. In fact, the other fisherman I went with is German, he has all the tools and equipment. The ice drill, sled, ice rods, ice rod rests, he always has all the gadgets

Come with me, my VP has shown a marked improvement and I will faithfully leave my Republic in her hands as I go forth and try to tempt something a little bigger, about 20 times bigger would still not be big! If i were to find one of the lurking catfish it would be amazing, 10,000 times bigger than what i caught last weekend. Though the chance of me hooking it is very slim and the chance to land it if i hooked it... it would be a titanic struggle

It is with a worry that my Republic of FreeFishers needs such a guiding hand from myself and my wish would be that the more mundane and crackpot ideas were thinned before being placed on my desk. But it is with relish that I answer to them all, to build the republic as I see fit. Perhaps in time the history books will not be kind but it is not for them that i judge the issues. It is for my people and my people's people!

Is this RP IC or are you saying that the place you're living in, in the south pacific islands, have mountains with snow peaks which enables you to icefish?

Well, in the map of TSP i tried to claim 146 which does have a mountain up to 4658m, with a river going up to the top. There'd be snow there and some ice covered lakes Smile
In reality, I'm in Europe, Hungary and we haven't seen positive Celsius all January so the lakes are frozen over.
In the post, I'm mixing it  up. I did go real ice fishing and thought it was cool. I just tried to link it into my nation. National animal is a Salmon and my user name is free fishers... i kinda have a fishy theme going on.
Whereabouts in Hungary do you live? I've visited there annually for the last seven years and, whisky I haven't seen much outside of Budapest and the Szatmár/Szabolcs/Bereg regions, I'm very fond of it. I keep meaning to work on my Hungarian (hence a recent nation using Hungarian as its language to make me learn more) but never seem to have the time. Sad

I've done it a few times, but I haven't done it in years now. I can't remember ever getting any fish Tounge

I especially remember one time when it was around -25°C. The fish weren't biting, and we were getting rather cold. It couldn't get much worse, so we decided to start a campfire by the holes. It felt strange, but worked just fine. Luckily, ice is a very poor heat conductor Happywide

Attached is a picture of the biggest of the three round goby that were caught, I have really big hands! They are a sea species that got sucked into some barge's ballast tanks and is now spreading invasively up and down the Danube and other rivers that transport barges are using. Wikipedia has some about it and the spots the fish have been found. They only grow to a few cm so never going to be bigger than this one. Funny eyes as they live on the bottom. In Hungarian they are géb and Spanish they are babosa, i caught them there in the sea.

Qert! A fire on the ice, you've more courage than me! I do agree technically it should work, but then fire, ice, water, splash, wet just doesn't make sense. I'm happy just trying to keep warm with food and a good suit. It's -2 to -10 at the moment, had a little -15 and one day of -21. If you've not caught you've got to try again, mind over matter, man over nature. Well, big fan of nature but to use it for myself and try to make it better than it was before I came. I usually take home a bag of rubbish I've collected while waiting for a bite.

Seraph - I'm in Budapest too, but was fishing on the Danube just north of Vac. I've been here 6 years and had a few weekends exploring West, East, North. Rarely been to the south. You've really been upper farthest NE, I've not been out that way. What's it like? I'm mostly surprised if you haven't been to Balaton, that's where everyone goes and gets sent in the summer. Hungary's little sea. The language is tough to learn, i can understand a lot but i miss any nuances and me speaking is very poor. I've just started looking for a teacher but dont have much free time to learn and can't really go to a school, want someone at my house or work or their house near where i am.Of course, I'll never be leader of Hungary whatever my level of Hungarian. And let's not talk about Hungary's politics at the moment, of Britain's or America or Russia. Ha, I'm gonna keep my head down and do my best as a tiny little human being here on Earth.

Hammerstar - It's true higher up the fish are less varied, but they're my favourites. Beautiful scenery, fresh mountain streams, clear bubbling water. It's magic up there.

Still ice fish. One of the few activities my wife doesn't need to "share"
