2017 Advent Calendar - Day 14

South Pacific Advent Calendar - Day 14

Hey, last year we asked you what Christmas was like in your NS nation and this year we want to hear if it's changed at all (or just about Christmas there in general, if you haven't told us before).

So, has anything significant happened in your nation to shape the way it celebrates Christmas? Does it celebrate Christmas at all? Perhaps you have some really novel traditions, or perhaps there's some heated religious tension that turns Christmas into riot night? Who knows? You do! Tell us!

Last year I told you about Vamapin Siread sutaciraduinea, the Erinoran midsummer Feast of Created Light, celebrating the long days of summer and the glory of creation, particularly according to the Erinoran religion of Revara. I also included how some Christmas traditions have become increasingly common in the middle of this two week festival, but that they aren't the main attraction.

In many respects, nothing has changed. This is a tradition dating back centuries and it's not going away anytime soon. What does make this year different, however, is that Erinor is in the middle of a civil war which has escalated into a worrying international conflict. The Erinoran island of Sereva, home to the minority Serevan people, has tried to become independent this year and, despite some government concessions, did not succeed in reaching an agreed threshold in a public referendum. What happened next, however, could not have been predicted.

A little known militant far-left group known as Bafuto Serevai took the post referendum tensions and violence and moulded it to it's own agenda, with the aim of turning Sereva into an independent socialist state. They rebelled against the government and, with the help of the nearby island nation of Bruuma, began to push the Erinoran forces out of the Serevan capital of Ramica.

Now, Bruuma has invaded, neighbouring GI-Land has sent troops, Ryccia has sent troopsa and the Frost Federation has supplied its navy. Everyone is converging on Sereva and that is going to be the political focus this Christmas. As a result, the Vamapin festivities (which started today!) might be a little muted, but then, people need these kinds of events to keep up their spirits during the darkest hours (even in the middle of summer) and so, perhaps, there'll be a renewed fervour to some of the ancient rites and rituals? Time will tell.

Volaworand a very secular nation, so Chistams is celebrated along the lines of Valentines, Mothers day, etc and recognized as a time of thankfulness and giving to others.
