[PASSED] Legislator Committee Appointment
#31

well... I look around - I notice I am a noob, and what I think would qualify as a "active RMBer":

here are some "poetic waxing's" I am just going to say and then go away for the rest of the day so I don't say anything more that I will regret:

Quite frankly I have not found these forums to be a welcoming place but understand that every online community will develop a "closed to outsiders in group culture".  That's fine and normal, but I'll still continue to poke around seeing what is here.  I follow and read through all the threads, participate where and when I can, and am trying to learn the culture of the forums, which is of course very different from game-side.

and hey guess what???  I am not your enemy!  not every player is a coup waiting to happen.  I am not here to take away your toys!  I came here because I was clearly told that joining the forums and becoming a legislator is the only way to fully participate in the community.

Say it is 10% that stick around... and you would know, you have the experience  I can respect that.  So if 10 or 20 applications are coming in a month, and 10% stick around.  that is one or two additional active people here every month...  that is 18 more contributing, active regulars every year...  would there be as much drudgery tasks if there were another 18 people willing to participate and help do those tasks?   is that a positive thing or a negative thing?  or did you prefer this to be the private playground of say 20 or 30 regulars? (and the occasion person popping back to say hi).

and why do 90% leave.  stop and think about that.  Parties claim to welcome players where they are found...  well they are here, knocking on the door!  Yes, obviously security checks are important, but so is ensuring a prompt respectful process...  you made it clear you hated doing it, that you would stop and you did.  That's your right, and thank you for your service!  Now let the community pick up the slack while it gets the drudge job done:  I really appreciate that Roavin has stepped up and that he at least has shown people the respect of letting them know their applications haven't been forgotten in the app thread - thank-you!

Frankly, most new folks (let's accept the 90% claim) arrive here without anything that resembles a welcome or direction, we stumble around and invariably will post in a wrong thread, or get lost in dead threads...  and they are immediately slapped, chastised for not knowing "the rules" and they back away from the forum side, many probably never return.  How many people here actually "welcome new forum members" -  I will tell you that from my experience the number is 2 or 3.  That is not a "welcoming" effort by any stretch of the imagination.

if I am supposed to go back to my side of the playground then just be honest and tell me and the rest of the "active RMBers" that we are not welcome.   If what you want is a forum side royal family, then hey, great... be that:  just be honest about it:  don't pretend to be a democratic coalition if that is the case.

Anyway, I'll be game side, have a great day folks.

Since I've gotten brought up a few times, I feel like I should address this.

I've largely back-channeled (with some wavering) to the Cabinet that I wasn't interested in the position and have aimed to stay out of this debate. I largely see this whole thing (while well-intentioned) as a boondoggle and the job itself as having high risk of f---ing up and low reward if done properly.

(Most recently, I've been traveling a lot for the holiday and winter break, really limiting my online time.)

All that said, if the Cabinet sees fit to properly appoint me, I will do it since we're having such problems here. In the interest of full disclosure, however, I am toying with the idea of running for delegate again, which, might lead to similar conflicts of interest as Roavin.

I hope this isn't true, Vol. I know things seem disorganized, but we certainly do want new players — and especially RMB active players! — to stick around. Hence this discussion and why Roavin is pushing so hard to get someone active on the committee.

I personally appreciate your input here and think it's important to hear how this is playing to newer players.

Volaworand, let me make my posts easier to understand, because people have gotten the wrong takeaway. If I didn’t think that the 1 out of 10 applicants becoming active members wasn’t important, I’d be saying get rid of applications altogether and we’ll pick and choose who we want to invite.

I do think it’s important to review applications speedily, so that those who will become active long-time members can start. It’s not so important, however, that it’s necessary or wise to open Pandora’s box with emergency appointments, put the Cabinet at risk politically, and burn somebody at the stake for being on vacation and having a busy month.

At the end of the day, it’s *not* a crisis if those applicants forget about TSP and go do other things for fun. It’s not worth it to cause a huge fight, when we’re literally talking about a less than week until my vacation ends. There will be more applicants. Some loss is acceptable. This is just a game.

I want to make a tangential point here that I made to Roavin, as well. I think we put a lot of emphasis on getting the status of legislator ... which, while important, is not (nor should be) and end all be all here. You can still do a remarkable number of things on the forums without being a legislator and — as long as someone is paying attention to the thread to make sure people don't feel like they are being ignored (as Roavin is doing) — I agree that some delay isn't that big of an issue.

Yeah, that was something we consciously wanted to do with the last Charter rewrite, right? Something’s gotten lost in the translation if people are being told on the RMB or through mass TG that becoming a legislator is the primary way to get involved.

I apologies for creating a tangent topic.

Ideally the LC fills a non-political administrative role, similar to the CoA, right (or am I wrong)?  If the only real hold up is a question of security checks just appoint all three LC positions to people already in the CRS and present a slate for vote by the assembly.   Anything that avoids political interference in new applications would be fine with me really.

Anyway, to return to the topic of this thread.  Let's just get the legislator committee up and running.

While I agree having a sitting cabinet member processing new applications as not ideal (since it gives the appearance of a politicians selecting their voters instead of the other way around) if the alternative is applications not being processed, then I will support having Roavin on the job until we have a committee doing it.

Problems is none of the CRS actually want to do it. It's a s*** and thankless job. I only even reluctantly offered because almost no one in the region even wants to do it.
