2017 Advent Calendar - Day 22

2017 Advent Calendar - Day 22

Today (or, rather, yesterday... oops) we want you to tell us about your favourite Christmas foods!

I'm going to cheat and instead tell you about my favourite birthday foods because, having my birthday the day before Christmas makes the two kinda inextricable and so the food kinda does too (also, I'm sure I already talked about Christmas food last year, so...)

Anyway, there are two things I really like to have on Christmas eve.  The first, is bacon, pancakes and maple syrup for breakfast (with Irish coffee on the side) and  the second (which I've had less often, but we're having again tomorrow for lunch with the in-laws) is bobotie, a South African dish made with minced beef, onions, spices, dried fruit and jam, all under an egg topping.  If it sounds really weird, well, I can assure you it tastes amazing and, to someone from the UK, at least, surprisingly festive!

So, what do you like to eat around Christmastime?  Do you have any particularly unique culinary traditions in your family?  What's your go-to snack on Christmas Day?  Tell us!  Tell us! Tell us!

Christmas Day is basically hell in my family, I'm probably gonna reach for alcohol..

My family's tradition is to have pizza for lunch, then a proper Christmas dinner. My grandparents used to homecook everything, though stopped a few years ago - this year, since I've learnt how to cook, I'm going to help out, making roast potatoes, parsnips and carrots. Homemade roast potatoes are gorgeous, by the way. Add way too much flour before putting them in the pan, and then they are the brownest and crispiest potatoes ever.

Unpopular opinion: I like sprouts.
Popular opinion: Christmas pudding with custard is amazing... and now I'm salivating.
Did some LC, MoRA, CRS stuff in the past. Do a lot of World Census stuff now.

Hot chocolate made by my dad and panettone with chocolate chips instead of raisins/fruits.

Oh, I love chocolate chip panettone! We used to sell one in my old workplace with chocolate cream swirled through it, too! Delicious!

As a fairly atheist family, we tend to have whatever sounds good at the time. Yesterday was a breakfast of pancakes, sandwiches for lunch, and a gnocchi dinner, with a lemon ricotta cake for dessert.
