Background Press Briefing on the Attempted Assassination of President Bao Nguyen

George E. Goldsmith Press Briefing Room

4:03 P.M. EST

ACTING PRESIDENT DONALD BLYTHE: There has been an attempted assassination of the President. President Bao Nguyen has been shot. It occurred about 15 minutes ago during a campaign event in the University of Belmont. We do not know how severely the President has been wounded. He is en route to the Jefferson Memorial Hospital, we don't know how serious his condition may be. Footage of the assassination is still making its way to us, we expect to have it shortly.

Witnesses are reporting that there was a quick succession of gunshots, 4 or 5, a lone gunman whose identity we are still trying to determine. We've been told the gunman was killed, as well as at least 1 Secret Service agent but we don't have definitive confirmation of that yet. We don't know who the gunman may be and who the agent is. The President received at least 1 gunshot to the abdomen, possibly more, that he clutched his stomach and fell instantly to the ground. President Nguyen has been wounded but still alive.

I, as the Vice President, have taken over as Acting President, assuming the duties of the Presidency under the terms of Article 1 of the Constitution. This is a difficult moment for the country and it is not the first time that a President has been shot in my lifetime or in many of yours.

But even though for those of us who have experienced it before, it is no less of a shock. It is no less terrifying. It is the moment when our nation's resilience, when our collective strength, the moment when all of that is tested the most. And we can only imagine how difficult it must be for the First Lady. Today, I asked all citizens of this nation and the South Pacific to join together, as one people, during this tough time. Thank you.

Statement by the Acting President on the Death of President Bao Nguyen

To the People of Bzerneleg and the South Pacific,

This is a sad time for all people. We have suffered a loss that cannot be weighed.

Bao Gerald Nguyen, 11th President of Bzerneleg, has been taken from us by an act which outrages decent men everywhere.

He upheld the faith of our fathers, which is freedom for all men. He broadened the frontiers of that faith, and backed it with the energy and the courage which are the mark of the Nation he led.

A man of wisdom, strength, and peace, he moulded and moved the power of our Nation in the service of a world of growing liberty and order. All who love freedom will mourn his death.

As he did not shrink from his responsibilities, but welcomed them, so he would not have us shrink from carrying on his work beyond this hour of national tragedy.

He said it himself: "The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it and the glow from that fire can truly light the world."

For me, it is a deep, personal tragedy. I know the world shares the sorrow that Mrs. Nguyen and her family bear. I will do my best, that is all I can do. I ask for your help and God's.

Presidential Inauguration of Donald Blythe

The inauguration of Donald Blythe as the 12th President of the United States was held at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, 26 December in the Cabinet Room at the Élysée Palace in Belmont, Belfort following the death of President Bao G. Nguyen earlier that day.

Blythe had just adjourned a session of the Bzerneleg Senate and was on his way to share a drink with House Majority Leader Frank Underwood, when he was summoned to the Élysée Palace.

Upon his arrival, he was met by First Lady Elizabeth Nguyen, who informed him that President Nguyen was dead. Shocked, Truman asked Mrs. Roosevelt, "Is there anything I can do for you?", to which she replied: "Is there anything we can do for you? For you are the one in trouble now."

Chief Justice of Bzerneleg Catherine Thomas administered the presidential oath of office. Among witnesses of this ceremony were Blythe's wife Marjorie, daughter Margaret, Mrs. Nguyen, House Speaker Claude Dubois, House Majority Leader Frank Underwood, President pro tempore of the Senate Heather Dunbar, and members of the Cabinet.

CHIEF JUSTICE THOMAS: Please raise your right hand and repeat after me.

Donald Blythe put his left hand on the bible and raise his right hand after the Chief Justice raised hers.
