Welcome to the South Pacific!

If you are interested in helping to shape our government, then you will want to apply to become a Legislator. Being a Legislator allows you to propose, debate, and vote on laws which govern the Coalition of the South Pacific in the Assembly (Our legislature), participate in the private assembly halls, and vote and run for offices in our government!

Note that you do not need to be a Legislator to contribute and you can participate in other ways (such as roleplay, journalism, event planning, military, or simply hanging around and enjoying our fine South Pacifican culture) (Read this for more information)

Requirements

You need to have a nation in the South Pacific (Any nation is sufficient, it does not need to be your main nation or a member of the World Assembly although we strongly recommend that)

There are some additional requirements for special cases but it is very unlikely that you'll need to meet them.

How to apply for Legislatorship
  1. Make a new thread in this place with a title of your choosing.
  2. Introduce yourself! Say hi, or hello, or guten Tag, or 你好, or whatever else strikes your fancy at that moment.
  3. Copy and paste the contents of the Application Form box below, and fill out the questions there.
  4. Make sure you've read through our Community Standards.
  5. Post it in the thread - and done! It's that easy!
Usually, applications will be processed within two to four days or less by a dedicated government institution known as the Legislator Committee (it consists of @Roavin, @Penguin, @Moonstar, and @Witchcraft and Sorcery). You will receive both a telegram to your nation(s) and a reply post on your application thread with the result.

  • Read this guide to learn about our politics and this guide to know how to participate in the Assembly.
  • Read and contribute to the Assembly Hall and the Private Assembly Hall by proposing and debating on laws that govern the South Pacific.
  • Wield your democratic voice and vote on legislation in The Voting Chamber
  • If you're on our Discord server, you will get access to the #legislators-lounge channel to discuss all the things that legislators discuss in a chat setting.
Staying as legislator

If you want to keep your legislator status, you must:
  • Keep your nation in the South Pacific!

  • Vote on legislation! We require that you vote on half of all assembly matters a month to keep your Legislator status.

  • Have fun! Well, that isn't strictly a requirement, but we're sure you will either way.
Happy legislating! Let your voice be heard.

If you have any question, please read the FAQ below or contact members of the Legislator Committee (@Roavin, @Penguin, @Moonstar, @Witchcraft and Sorcery) for answers.

Frequently Asked Questions about Applying for Legislatorship

I'm new and the application form is confusing!

If you are a new player in NationStates, you won't have anything to fill out except the name of your nation in the South Pacific and your Discord handle. If you have a question, feel free to state where you're unsure in your application and we'll get back to you quickly.

Discord handle? What is that?

Discord is a free chat service (akin to Skype or IRC) that many regions in NationStates use for its members to communicate in real-time, via text or voice. The South Pacific has its own Discord server as well, which you can join by clicking here. With your Discord handle, the Legislator Committee can give you access to the private legislator's lounge on our Discord server. We encourage you to register an account on Discord and join; your handle can be found on the bottom right corner and looks something like Roavin#5410.

I've been playing for a while. My super detailed curriculum vitae on NationStates detailing all past and current involvement in other regions is only 241 pages long, but the forum won't let me post it! What do I do?

The list doesn't have to be that exhaustive! We're not looking for a full dossier on you, but rather just key facets. A list of names will do just fine, and the Legislator Committee will for ask more details if necessary.

I am a member of a NationStates military, and my World Assembly membership is floating. What do I give as my World Assembly nation?

In that case, list which nation is currently admitted to the World Assembly, and name the puppet set that you intend to be using. Usually, this will not be much of an issue, and the Legislator Committee will reach out to you about it if necessary.

I'm not comfortable sharing some of the information asked of me.

No problem - just mention that this is the case in the application, and the Legislator Committee will reach out to you privately.

I've submitted my application. What now?

Usually, your application will be processed within 1-2 days; sometimes the Legislator Committee will ask you for more detail and in rare cases it can take up to a week (but that's very rare). But while you wait, there are many things you can do.
  • Take a look at our laws in the MATT-DUCK Law Archive(1)
  • Read through, and contribute in, our public Assembly Halls!
  • Explore the rest of the South Pacific! We are very multi-faceted and there is something for everyone.
Okay, I'm a Legislator. What now?

Now that you're a legislator, here are the perks:
  • Read and contribute to the Assembly Hall and the Private Assembly Hall by proposing and debating on laws that govern the South Pacific.
  • Wield your democratic voice and vote on legislation in The Voting Chamber
  • If you're on our Discord server, you will get access to the #legislators-lounge channel to discuss all the things that legislators discuss in a chat setting.

Note that there are a few requirements for staying a legislator.
  • Keep your nation in the South Pacific! If you must move it out, you can move in another nation as long as you tell the Legislator Committee about it.
  • Vote on legislation! We require that you vote on half of all assembly matters a month to keep your Legislator status. If you're not sure what to vote for, you can always vote to abstain, which will count towards your monthly quota. And if you're going on vacation, that's not a problem - just let the Chair of the Assembly know in the Leave of Absence thread.
  • Have fun! Well, that isn't strictly a requirement, but we're sure you will either way.

If you're not keeping up with your requirements, the Legislator Committee will reach out to you about it.

For everything else, read the wonderful Legislator FAQ here!
