Resignation
#1

Hello,

This is my resignation notice from the Southern Progress Party (SPP). I do not think that political parties, as they currently function, are conducive to a stronger TSP and will endeavor to provide my reasoning on this decision. This is not meant to offend any individuals but highlight the reasons why parties that function in this manner are to be seen as a threat to independent thought and reason as well as honesty and transparency.

In terms of the SPP, I fear that because it is such a concentrated set of individuals (unlike the APC which was able to add members over time that varieted them more and also had strong leadership that encouraged dissent) that it is much more cliquish and far less transparent. Members within the party have their own secret cabals and plotting and aren’t honest with members outside of the inner clique. Instead of working with or even communicating transparently with each other, they seem to engage in petty theatrics. Rather than apply logic and fairness to all members, they target those that don’t follow the leadership blindly.

A member of SPP proposed some legislation, I tried to engage in healthy debate around the legislation on the forums and felt like I was being silenced with insinuations from another party member of how obvious the wording of the legislation was. I’m glad that the debate then went to the Legislators Lounge and TSPers began to actually discuss and try to improve the legislation instead of forced lemming like obedience. I do fear this type of suppression of discussion meant to clarify and improve things whether in the name of party solidarity or a clique is detrimental to actual change and progress.

While the party has a great platform (the easy part) it seems to lack the leadership and vision to enact the platform. It is pointless to give titles without setting up access for those members to actually learn or develop or enact change.

A trend I’ve seen in political parties is to try to send any warm body to run for positions whether LC or cabinet and not only do the candidates not sometimes know if they want to run, there doesn’t seem to be any sort of support for them to run. I envision a better system where candidates are mentored to become capable of running based on experience and action rather than being part of a clique.

I am troubled by the goal of a party to be to fill all the elected positions with their members regardless of whether or not they believe, read or even question the campaigns of their members. Being told that a party member voted without reading most of the questions and answers does not inspire confidence that the party is anything but a clique. In an ideal world, voters make informed choices not petty ones.

Therefore, to I think break what I see as negative trends in political parties, I’m starting a civic organization. What will it do? For one thing, it’ll actually do stuff and give people the chance to do good work! One thing it will definitely offer is assistance for those wanting to run for positions (honest feedback, advice on how to make oneself a better candidate through service to the region and hopefully mentorship).

Check out the Independent South Pacificans, a civic organization open to all TSPers who’d like to get to work and make some real change!

I'm sorry you feel you needed to resign. Your resignation has been accepted and you'll be removed from party rosters in due course. All the best for the future.
