Resident Spotlight: Unibot
#1

I invited Unibot to the Government House to talk about his career in NationStates. He insisted in attending our meeting dressed as the Fourth Doctor, to make a statement about the awesomeness of Doctor Who. We talked about how we came to NationStates, his involvement here and in the Rejected Realms, and his preferences in books and movies.

1. How did you learn about NationStates? What's the significance behind the name 'Unibot'?

Well, this was seven years ago now. It was High School and Unibot had a lot of acne and issues with… girls… and *wheezes* … and where is my puffer!!? I was involved in a school play (which secretly I only joined because I had a crush on the house manager – shush) called “Humanus Apparatus”. I served as the copy editor (the kind that rewrites most of the script). There was a dystopian suburban world (think “Stepford Wives”) in the play which was central to the story and its name was “Unibot”. “Before you rot, get Unibot!” was the corporate slogan.

Funny thing is I didn’t choose the name. Unibot was selected in a draw of a hat between the cast and crew. In fact, I never even liked Unibot as a choice because it always struck me as a bit too robotic for a community. Anyways, one late night while I was editing the script, I got the idea to try some sort of nation simulation game and input “Unibot” in as the country and possibly incorporate the results into the story. “NationStates” popped up when I googled “nation simulation” and I found out the hard way that NationStates’s statistics were totally useless to me and the creative process. Hah!

That is actually a cool story. Somehow I expected something less interesting, like "I like bots". Tounge

2. What made you stick around?

I think it’s because NationStates has always been something that evolves and changes. As I grow, my contributions to NationStates have grown. It was a fun place for me to hang out with school-friends once in a quiet backwater region. When my school-friends got bored, it was a fun place for me to write resolutions and get involved with the politicking of the World Assembly and think creatively. By that point I was totally … consumed. It was a corner of the Internet where I played a major role in the events of the game.

3. You are involved in several regions. What makes the South Pacific and the Rejected Realms stand out?

Hmmm, The South Pacific was my first region in Gameplay (which a capital G) where I was involved in the government and it was a break from my previous career as a WA Author. I was trying to move away from the World Assembly and branch out into Gameplay, but in The North Pacific I was only ever appointed the WA Minister whenever I ran for office.

At the time there was quite a buzz around The South Pacific – it was emerging from a long nap under Fudgetopia and there had been that coup which had shaken things up. I and Milograd and Belschaft and Topid and .. aha, Hilevile too, good times, were players who joined The South Pacific in the rush. It was the hip place. There was a lot of talk about the potential for The South Pacific to become the first defender Game-Created Region which of course blew over eventually as it always does. Lately, I think The South Pacific has been getting back on its feet but there was a period under Hileville/Belschaft following the Milograd Coup where it wasn’t sure *what* it wanted to be which is a troubling and painful situation for any region because the outcomes are always zero-sum and never please everyone. Change and new blood and a willingness to push forward is what is going to eventually rejuvenate and bring some much needed harmony and coherency to The South Pacific.

As for The Rejected Realms, I suppose its relationship with me is like a girl who treats you really well for years and you don’t ever think about them in a romantic way and then it all just accumulates until you realize, “oh, she liked me!”. I was serving as the Officer of Media Affairs – it was literally the first Gameplay region to trust me with an executive position where I wasn’t “the WA Guy” (no offense to WA Officers, but that would have been my fifth term as a WA Officer). That’s something that is brilliant about The Rejected Realms. It trusts people who deserve that second, third, even fourth chance and I really tried my hardest to make sure that the Media Department was top-notch under my watch. I had a lot to prove and I still have a lot to prove as delegate. Like The South Pacific, I think The Rejected Realms was recently going through a period where we weren’t sure what we wanted to be as a region but since January, we’ve had a very clear idea of who we are. We’re proudly defender. Our region’s army turned eleven this year. We’re proudly open to all. We’re who we want to be and a very fair community, despite being a bit tough at times.

Recently someone asked me “how can you stand all of those hard-asses in TRR?” and my response was (very affectionately) “they elected the King of Hard-Asses, that’s why!”.

When I was having a hard time in The East Pacific and delegate elections were going to open in The Rejected Realms, it just clicked in my brain… why was I spending all of my time trying to find a home in places where I wasn’t liked, when The Rejected Realms had always been open to me? I want to be a really great delegate for The Rejected Realms and I consider it a real privilege to have been given the chance to lead the region.

That's...quite a long answer. Tounge
I guess all that comes down to the fact that they are regions that you can call 'home'. It's always important to have a NS home.

4. What do you like most about being a citizen of the South Pacific?

Well, hah, not being banned from the forums is a start! I think the best part about being a citizen of The South Pacific is I am so spectacularly wrong for The South Pacific! I don’t think I’ve ever fit in The South Pacific. If scientists sat down and decided how to make a citizen who was optimally awful at being a citizen in The South Pacific, they would probably devise me. Honestly, it’s kind of fun being the black sheep. It’s like wearing a full suit and a top hatch to a beach party or something. Your name becomes a political synonym for being some sort of stubborn, independent force. You’re your own “thing”.

In all fairness, you are very stubborn and often drive people crazy. Smile

5. If you could start your NS career all over again, what is one thing that you would do differently?

I’ve made so many mistakes to get where I am. I wouldn’t change a damn thing.

6. What do you enjoy the most about being Delegate of the Rejected Realms? What do you enjoy the least?

I think the best part of being delegate of the Rejected Realms is I have quite a lot of freedom to pursue new ideas and opportunities. My hope is it’ll become known as an innovative region that’s fun and creative. I suppose the thing I like the “least” is I cannot serve as an active defender, but honestly I needed a break from the field and I’ve really enjoyed the job thus far!

7. How do you manage to write so much about NS?

I guess I just have a lot to say! I think the secret is to not stray from controversy. A lot of The Rejected Times’s competitors self-censor a lot. This means they release their newspapers and they get a lot of fanfare from politicians.

“Yay, a newspaper that doesn’t criticize us ….like those slugs over at the Times! Yay!”

But that doesn’t mean they’re building a base of loyal readers or enjoying their work. It just means they’re gaining popularity with people in power. I really enjoy sitting down to write The Rejected Times and I love to put a critical light on people and things that aren’t normally subject to criticism.

The Times is awesome, but often it's just so long...

8. What is your favourite book/movie/song/game?

My favorite book is Catch-22. I don’t have a favorite film but I long for the days where Hollywood brought us original, fresh series with a big scope and a sense of adventure like Indiana Jones, Stars Wars or Back to the Future, which always captivated me as a kid. If I had to choose a favorite film, I’d probably go with a John Hughes film like Planes, Trains and Automobiles. That man wrote every great comedy in the Eighties.

My favorite television show is Doctor Who. I’m a bit nuts as a Whovian. I’m currently in the middle of listening to the “The Power of the Daleks” audiobook and following the spoilers regarding Series 8 like a mad heroin addict. My favorite game is NationStates… duh!

I wonder why haven't you organised a Doctor Who festival yet? It would be awesome to have one.
You are also probably the first or second person in a Resident Spotlight to name NationStates as their favourite game. :s

9. Cake or Pie? (there is only one right answer)

Depends on what kind of cake or pie. If it’s fruit cake, I’d rather eat a pair of old gym socks, but if it’s a succulent chocolate cake, I’m in! I’m not even sure I know what fruit cake is made of...

Obviously we are talking about chocolate cake. That's a given! Tounge

Anything else you would like to add?

Hmm, thanks for having me, Kringalia. It’s been a pleasure! Until next time.

Thanks Uni! I'm thinking we might need a follow up, to ask some other questions I have in mind.

I know right? Tounge

Actually, I was thinking of asking some follow-up questions about his position as High Court Justice.
