Independence Day in TSP is one of our holidays that most modern TSPers don’t really know the history behind. I’ll admit I don’t know much about that point in our history, either. But more important than the specifics of the LadyRebels defying the ACC is the spirit the holiday represents.

I’ve been a member of TSP for many years now and have served in our government for almost as long. Over that time, I’ve noticed that one of the key characteristics most of us share is a strong commitment to keeping the Coalition independent of foreign control. In 2014, when I served my first term as Minister of Foreign Affairs, TSP’s independence was front and center of the Cabinet’s agenda. Following a horrible coup that fractured our region, we let our fear led us down a dark path. We allied with UCR imperialists – The New Inquisition, and by association the United Imperial Armed Forces – and let them dictate our foreign policy and military alignment through the backdoor, because we feared both what would happen if we angered them and what would happen if we didn’t have their protection.

The spirit of independence prevailed. We confronted the imperialists about their overbearing and controlling influence in our region, and ultimately, we unchained ourselves from those bonds. Ever since, TSP has flourished on a path we built ourselves. We no longer let foreign influences dictate what we do and what we’re allowed to believe in. That’s the spirit LadyRebels had and it’s the spirit that keeps TSP independent today.

As we chart further along our path, Independence Day reminds us of the times we strayed and the how we righted our course. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs plays a vital role in protecting TSP’s independence. Our Foreign Ministers, deputies, advisors, and diplomats are responsible for building alliances that make us stronger, but not subservient. They’re responsible for standing up against our foes and protecting our friends. And they’re responsible for recognizing the red flags and sounding the alarm when nefarious forces may be threatening our region.

On this Independence Day, let’s celebrate TSP being brave enough to openly call ourselves defender. Let’s celebrate our new diplomatic corps, which will be enrolling its first class in the coming days. But most of all, let’s celebrate our common values of being fiercely independent and protective of our region’s democracy.
