Delegate's Closing Speech
#1

Whilst there are still a few things to wrap up and there's no need to stop the partying just yet, as Delegate of the South Pacific, it is my honour and my privilege to give this last speech to bring our Independence Day Festival to a close and, as is fitting in such a bookending sort of speech, I want to look back a little while...

One of the first things I did in the South Pacific, after crawling out of the primordial soup that is the RMB (just kidding guys), was to help Roavin write a history piece for the Coalition Day festival on which he was working. The period I was to cover was the birth of the Coalition itself and its earliest years. I was still very new to the region and utterly new to the forumside government and all that entails, but I found myself fascinated as I trawled through ancient forum posts and learned about the players that populated the region at the time. It brought the region to life for me in a way I had not imagined possible before and put my experiences into context as part of a continuum of players stretching back over a decade and a half.

One of the events I researched is the very one we’ve been celebrating this week, so it’s been a real pleasure to have LadyRebels here amongst us to give us a fuller picture of that time and share her general insanity with us all. I’m delighted to have learned new things about that summer sixteen years ago and I think I’ve possibly learned new things about the region I love as it is now, as well.

It can be a great thing, looking back over the past. Whilst there can be a temptation to wallow in it, to compare the present unfavourably in its rose-tinted light, it is important to understand where we have come from, sometimes, to truly perceive where we’re going. Given that, in the midst of this festival we have completed one of the most important votes in TSP history, it seems fitting that we’ve been thinking more and more about what makes our region truly independent as we finally move away from the capital I Independence ideology which had for so long been the most prevalent. We’ve taken the decision to redefine ourselves, but in a way that is totally in keeping with the journey we have made thus far, the values we have held strong throughout that journey and the idealised destinations we have had in mind. And, after all, it is that self-determination which has, for so long, been at the very heart of what it means to be a South Pacifican, something LadyRebels exemplified back in 2003.

But now the festival is drawing to a close; our celebrations come to an end. Often that means that we move on to the next exciting event in our calendar, so we’re always looking forward to something, always anticipating.

Perhaps, on this occasion, it would be okay to keep looking back as well as forward. If you’ve enjoyed this week, may I suggest you continue to learn about the past of the South Pacific? Ask questions, read archives, seek to understand and then use what you’ve learned to help shape the still-independent, still-democratic South Pacific of the future. Because I think that would be something truly special to look forward to.
