[IC] Eggrarian Civil War
#11

The two stepped out of the vehicle to find the home city of Josua to be a practical ghost town. Nobody was around, not even any patrols. Thousands should be in the area, but instead the buildings, seemingly in worse shape than he remembeted, empty, dark, were towering over them, moreso than the dread that entered Josua's mind.

Soon the two came across Josua's childhood home. It, too, had seemed abandoned. No cars, no people, no signs of life whatsoever. Fear set in almost immediately.

"Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit," Josua pushed from his teeth, almost running into the building. The door was unlocked.

Upon opening the door, all of the lights were off. All of the posessions -- at least, the important things, not the furniture -- were gone. Josua searched the house everywhere.

Alex, following behind, began his search for any signs of life himself. Certainly there had to be some sort of trace of the lance corporal's family, especially if he was in such a hurry.

Upon checking the kitchen counter, he found an unfinished letter.

It’s been over two months. I was in the Thirteenth when the largest push from the insurrectionists were made.

I since managed to find my family in a hideout that was created in a local hospital near my family. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people were in fear. Apparently, the city had not gotten a branch of military security until I had arrived. When the people saw my brown scouting uniform, they were beyond happy to see me.

“Still no word from the Ryccian government”, “Intelligence agencies are out”, “People are safe in the major cities”, all the basic stuff, I had to comfort them. They had been affected most by the end of this blackout, especially considering almost all of the food went bad in the area due to the refridgeration failing. Even backup generators managed to fail in this hospital.

“Alright, now that we’re here, we need to get this place in shape.”

Luckily, training involved defense training and creating sustainable shelters for citizens. I rationed out many of the city’s existing goods, made sure to test for any signs of pathogens, and carefully taught citizens who were assigned ration management how to disinfect and properly tend for food.

However, within a week, the defensive line reached the city.

“Josua, I’ve got really bad news.”

I turned to find my associate Alex running in from a scouting mission.

“What is it-“

“It’s the insurrectionists. They’re lying dormant in cities. They’ve been planning this attack for a month, people can’t move, the defense line can be attacked from both sides, and-“

“Slow down-“

“Rain Point Armories. They’re getting weapons from an extremely deadly arms dealer.”

He dropped a fully automatic on a table. Not even Eggrarian soldiers were granted these things.

“How..? They shouldn’t have communication outside the peninsula.”

“Intel agencies have a theory. Right now, we need to get the citizens to the safest point in the shelter.”

“Alex, you take care of that. I’ll telegram for a scouting mission around the city.”

“Yes sir.”

He moved out from the front doors of the hospital and looked over to the tower they had built outside. He climbed up it hastily, watching his back for anything dangerous.

Once up, he wired a telegram to the nearest city’s defensive line.

It took a while, but eventually the Thirteenth was deemed secure by the area. Due to political angst in the districts occupied by war, Eggrarian militias started rising to try to assist the military proper in pushing back against the insurrectionists. It was working for a time, and we even got a well-armed paramilitary group in the Thirteenth. The insurrectionists were eventually pushed back by people in the northern Third who siezed the illegal weapons the insurrectionists gained and pushed back their front successfully.

Eventually, pardons were granted to a lot of these groups. I heard even the leader of the group in the Third got an honourary leader of the people title. Things were finally beginning to look up, and definitely couldn't be finished soon enough. People at home were getting restless.

Episode II
To What End?

I would be lying if I said things looked extremely hopeful.

There was still the dread about what was going on in the Fourteenth. The Fourteenth itself was a mystery altogether, and the fully automatic from Rain Point Armories did nothing to assist in solving it. Our intelligence agencies looked everywhere for any ways they could have been assisted through overseas shipments and turned up empty handed. There’s always the possibility they made discrete imports, but national customs would have found the shipments prior...

Upon all of this, Alex returned with the Captain stationed at the Thirteenth.

The captain spoke up. “Josua Promethui?”

“Sir. A pleasure to see you here.” I stood up and saluted him.

“I’ve been told to give you orders from higher command. You’re moving to the Third.”

I hesitated. “If I may ask, who gave these-“

“The General, Promethui.”

A small second of silence.

“There’s something important he wants you to do.”

I stood, somewhat shocked, because I had never been ordered directly from the General to do anything. Even as a lance corporal, I was several ranks under even the local members of leadership. As I saw the captain turn away, I instinctively spoke up:

“May Alex accompany me, sir?”

He sat silent. “You understand the only way an accompanying member of any solider stationed to move must be the exact rank under the individual and must also be considered for military-sponsored educational apprenticeship, correct?”

He was right. I wasn’t sure why I wanted him to accompany me, but I felt his importance would assist me greatly. He fully turned around to the door, and spoke: “Alex will be promoted to Private First Class. If you can manage to complete an engineering certification, he can come along with you as an engineer’s assistant.”

Soundtrack.

I made my way before the captains and the Aunginui General*, surrounded by the peers who would evaluate my certification exam. Dozens stood in attention as the Aunginui General approached the desk by which I would have to face one of nearly forty-five different exams, all of which I was expected to be able to master in order to be certified. My time spent in childhood, pursuing an engineering degree would not be lost on me.

"Josua Promethui," the ironclad engineer said. "Step forward."

"You are expected to perform one of forty-five different tasks for me today. Are you understanding of the general requirements of your exam?"

I nodded.

He placed the engine of a tank, clearly dilapidated and worn from battle upon my desk, with the help of three other men. In the event that I needed to move the engine, the three men would assist me.

"Diagnose and repair the given tank engine in under an hour. You are expected to inform me of the model of this tank and the proper procedure of returning it to the tank that it belongs to. Your overall grade will be determined by both the speed and quality of the repair as well as the certainty of your response."

I stood, cold, collected, analyzing my tools and what I would need to.

"Begin."

*lit. "General Engineer-man", a high ranking military officer that oversees a Colonel's engineer corps, as well as their certifications. These are assigned by the General of the Eggrarian Military and often have extremely high ranking degrees in their fields. Most are expected to fully understand the inner workings of all machines on the battlefield as well as experimental technology regarding theoretical physics.
