INDIES ESTABLISHES EMBASSY WITH FOREST, HARKENS BACK TO CONIFER ROOTS
AUTHOR: KARTERIA | PUBLISHED: AUGUST 24TH 2020

The foreign affairs of the New West Indies is largely defined by variability and a constant effort to establish a general direction. Once regular foreign players, such as Thaecia and the New Western Empire, are now considered unavailable for diplomatic engagement, and new embassies have taken their places.

One constant has been diplomatic friendship with Conifer, later Evergreen Conifer. Since the ratification of the Evergreen Pact on July 26, 2018, the New West Indies and Conifer has maintained an amicable and lengthy relationship. These ties culminated in the aptly-named Treaty of Conservation in April, aiming to preserve the culture and spirit of Conifer via merging their community with ours.

Several months later, the New West Indies has finally achieved its goal of establishing diplomatic ties with Forest, concluding an effort that began soon after the treaty with Conifer. The embassy was officially established on August 24, alongside an announcement from the Office of the Secretary-General:

“The Embassy will hopefully mark the beginning of a close partnership between our two regions. [...] [Forest is] a large but tight-knit and compassionate community; they uphold principles of democracy and equality between nations.”

Indeed, Forest is a significantly large and well-known region, being a home for over 400 nations and having been commended by Security Council Resolution 219. The region also prominently supports addressing environmental issues, both in real-life society and on NationStates, regularly publishing reports on the environmental statistics of their nations.

This new embassy with Forest was not by sheer coincidence, however. Forest was among Conifer’s few embassy partners – along with the New West Indies – for many years due to their shared interest in the environment. Forest was heavily involved in the merger negotiations between Conifer and the New West Indies, clarifying the Indies’ legitimacy and responsibilities. Through these negotiations, both the New West Indies and representatives from Forest found it suitable to establish embassies.

Unfortunately, this conversation seemed to end quickly after it began. While Secretary-General Karteria proposed an embassy request, it expired, as the government of Forest experienced some fallout due to election delays. It would not be until months later that the embassy – and official ties – were established. This new embassy continues the trend of relations between our region and other prominent communities, such as Osiris, Lazarus, and 10000 Islands.

However, questions remain. How will the New West Indies government act on these new ties? What is the next step for diplomatic engagement? The recently-elected government will need to address these issues and more concerning our place in the world.

As Secretary-General at the time, the author was the primary negotiator for the New West Indies on the Treaty of Conservation and relations with Forest. They also reference themselves on occasion.

Karteria was a journalist for NationStates Today from April through August 2020. They previously served as the 2nd Secretary of Administration and 4th Secretary-General of the New West Indies, in which they and/or signed multiple interregional agreements for the region. They currently serve as Region’s Attorney.
