TSP Does NaNoWriMo: 2020 Edition

By Farengeto.

As November approaches, so too does National Novel Writing Month. National Novel Writing Month (often abbreviated as NaNoWriMo, or simply NaNo) is a global writing challenge that takes place throughout the month of November.

Our region is home to a number of writers, and to showcase their amazing talent, throughout the month The Southern Journal will be running a series of special articles to spotlight that talent, and encourage the writers of the South Pacific – past, present, and future.

What is NaNoWriMo?
Running every year during the month of November, NaNoWriMo has one simple challenge: to write 50,000 words in a single month. A novel is traditionally defined as being at minimum 50,000 words, and if you can reach that mark you may be almost done with the first step of creating your very own novel.

But the challenge is about more than just getting those 50,000 words. It may seem daunting, and you're not wrong if it does. You may not reach it your first time, and you still may not make it your second time. But that's okay. I didn't either. The 50,000 mark is not what is important. What matters is that when the month is over, you'll have something. Maybe not a finished book, but partway to one. You'll have more than when you started, and more than if you hadn't tried.

If you've ever thought about writing, I encourage you to try. Grab a pen or a keyboard or whatever method you prefer, and on November 1 come join us in writing.

For information about NaNoWriMo, check out their website.

The Ministry of Media, in collaboration with The Silicon Pens, will be running activities in November in celebration of NaNo. If you're a member of the South Pacific's regional Discord server, you can chat with us about NaNoWriMo in #nano-hangout.

Here at The Southern Journal, every week – starting November 1 – we will be posting new articles about NaNoWriMo. Included in each issue will be a new writing challenge for everyone to do that week - the results of which we'll share in the next issue, as well as places to share your progress so far. We'll also offer some writing advice and words of encouragement for NaNoWriMo participants.

Each week, we will also be showcasing a different writer in the South Pacific. Whether you're a new writer or have already published a book, this space is for you. These will give you a place to share your experiences as a writer, and to show off your work to the world.

If you're interested in appearing in our author showcase, just fill out the attached form.
