TSP Government Approval Survey: November 2020 Edition

By Farengeto.

From November 24th to 30th 2020, the Ministry of Media's Bureau of Statistics conducted its first monthly TSP governmental approval survey.

The survey received 55 responses. Of the respondents, 31 identified themselves as Legislators, 22 as non-Legislator Citizens, and two as non-residents of TSP. This iteration of the survey was conducted fully anonymously, and the Bureau of Statistics has no way of identifying the respondents. All questions except for the citizenship and legislator status questions were optional, and as such, the number of responses per question may vary slightly.

Summary

Despite some mixed opinions, respondents overall expressed confidence in the region. Approximately three-quarters of respondents agreed with the direction, compared to a tenth who disagreed. This general approval was displayed by all Citizens, regardless of Legislator status.

Cabinet

Support for the Cabinet is relatively mixed but leaning positive, both overall and in regards to individual ministers and ministries. Overall support for the Cabinet is relatively consistent between Legislators and non-Legislators, though approval of individual ministries was more divided. Respondents showed a high level of undecided votes on the direction of Cabinet and its ministries, averaging 30-40% undecided in all categories, among both Legislators and non-Legislators. Approval of the Prime Minister appears to be roughly the same as the Cabinet overall.

Almost all commenters raised concerns about the communication from Cabinet overall, and amongst individual ministries. Commenters frequently expressed confusion about what most of Cabinet has done this term, and its agenda.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs slightly outperformed Cabinet overall in all categories, but not beyond the margin of error.

The Ministry of Engagement had the highest overall approval among Cabinet ministries, with around 60% approving of its direction compared to 10% against.

The Minstries of Media and Culture were both received critically by the region; particularly among Legislators, where for both ministries the Yes and No votes on their direction were almost equal. Commenters expressed concerns about a lack of activity from these ministries.

The Ministry of Defence and the South Pacific Special Forces were marked by a notable divide between legislators and non-Legislator respondents. While it was the Ministry with the highest level of approval among Legislators, it received some of the lowest scores among non-Legislators. The comments did not provide any further information as to the cause of this gap.

Gameside Governance

Approval of gameside governance is marked by a notable contrast between Legislators and non-Legislators. While 80% of Legislator respondents expressed approval of the direction of the gameside government, nearly 60% of non-Legislator respondents were undecided.

This contrast continues with the approval of government officials. The gap is most stark in the approval ratings of Delegate Amerion. Legislators displayed clear support for the Delegate, with 90% of respondents ranking him 4/5 or higher, giving him the second-highest approval score among all of the officials and institutions surveyed. However, non-Legislators were highly divided on the Delegate, giving him their second-lowest individual approval score. This gap of 1.12 points is the largest of any group on this survey. The comments did not provide any further information as to the cause of this gap.

The Local Council has a lower but still statistically significant divide. Support for the current Local Council - both individually and as a collective - is generally positive among both Legislators and non-Legislators. The notable exception to this is Local Councilor Drystar, who received an average rating of 2.91 from non-Legislators, the only category to receive a rating below 3/5.

The Assembly

Approval of the Assembly is positive, though with a notable divide between Legislators and non-Legislators. While 80% of Legislator respondents expressed approval of the direction of the gameside government, nearly 60% of non-Legislator respondents were undecided. The more mixed ratings among non-Legislator mostly came from these undecided voters.

Chair of the Assembly Hycanith had the highest overall approval rating by a significant margin, indicating strong support for their performance this term. This reaction was shared in the comments.
