Executive News

Another electoral cycle came and went, lasting from July 11th-18th, though it was no different to the last. Again, the two candidates for Premier were (redacted PII) of the Progressive Democratic Alliance (PDA) and CGJ of the Orderian People's Alliance (OPA). Many citizens knew that they were both extremely strong candidates. Campaigning was similar to the previous election, with both candidates working day and night to try and win the elections. (redacted PII) again based his campaign around experience and decreased isolationism, whereas CGJ's campaign was again focussed on internal development.

The outcome was the same, too - CGJ won a second term as Premier in an extremely close election, defeating (redacted PII) with 12 vote compared to (redacted PII)'s 9, though (redacted PII) did gain a seat in the Senate as a consolation. The OPA still controls the Executive and has a majority in the Senate.

The Ministries have been making some progress, too:

The Ministry of Culture has set up a Cultural District in what citizens are informally referring to as the "cultural revolution". It has built on some of the plans which Beatrice's administration left unfinished and finally established a Library for the region, as well as an archive section, an Art Gallery and the "Mundus Prize" scheme. The latter is a series of regularly-held contests with varying themes, and the entry which is deemed the best is given an award. (Well, we say award, it's a moral victory more than anything else.)

The Ministry of Foreign and Imperial Affairs has set up an Ambassadorial Corps to help citizens get more involved in the region - though it's mostly so people like the Grand Chancellor and the Minister of Foreign and Imperial Affairs can keep their cushy jobs whilst doing as little work as possible (the lazy sods). As you may have guessed, an ambassador is delivering this update to you right now, after going through the diplomatic visa application process:

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Integration has continued work on the Independent Mentors Corps, and has introduced a "Welcome Package", which will help newcomers hit the ground running. Furthermore, the Independent Mentors Corps is being reformed with the implementation of a newcomers' curriculum and an IMC panel, so this is expected to increase activity in the previously stagnant Ministry.

The Ministry of Defence has, unfortunately, been somewhat inactive due to the RL committments/issues of the Minister. Nevertheless, they have been able to issue promotions to various troops and new recruits are still coming through. All that remains now is to train said recruits. Additionally, both the Independent Dragoons and Independent Militia are now open for hire as film extras.

The Attorney General's Office (a.k.a. the Ministry of Justice) has fortunately had little work to do, though they have tried to ram some judicial experience down everyone's throats by holding a mock trial. The Attorney General is also planning to implement a proper Judiciary and a Prosecution Service, as well as a number of other institutions and schemes. Finally, the Attorney General's Office/Ministry of Justice is getting off its bum and actually doing something.

And the Ministry of Accountability, like the Ministry of Defence, has been inactive due to a combination of the absence of the Minister and a general lack of work. Nevertheless, once a new Minister is brought in, the Ministry of Accountability should be revitalised.

Addtionally, and on a rather sad note, Avakael has chosen to abdicate as Grand Chancellor, leaving Beatrice, his Vice Chancellor, to take the reins. Avakael officially abdicated on 30th July with his signing of His Excellency’s Declaration of Abdication Act into law. Beatrice has now taken over and is establishing a dictatorship gladly leading the Order.

Legislative News

A new Senate was elected during the last elections in July, with the OPA still holding a majority in the Senate and the PDA remaining as the official opposition Party. The new Senators are as follows:

(redacted PII)
DaveIronside
Elpidia
CGJ
KaiserAdolf
Achkaerin
Dijel

Or rather, they were, as Elpidia has been removed from his position as Speaker, as well as his seat in the Senate as a whole as he has gone AWOL. A by-election (the first administrated by new Grand Chancellor Beatrice) was held with Hypothetical Genius winning the empty seat.

In terms of actual legislation, the Senate has passed two Bills this term and is currently voting on a third. His Excellency’s Declaration of Abdication Act and the Judicial Procedures, Sentencing and Evidence Act have already been passed by the Senate this term, with the Succession Act currently being voted upon. The Senate certainly seems to be active this term - hopefully this trend will continue (unless some silly bugger decides to go AWOL again). No more Bills have since been submitted to the Senate Docket but we can guarantee that in time, there will be.

Roleplay News

The new convention centre forum hit the ground running as a huge host of role-players gathered at the Conference for Universal Rights. The nations gathered with the combined aim of working in unison to improve access to inalienable human rights worldwide. Much progress was made though the absence of some of the worst abusers of Human Rights was noted, and it is unsure as to whether they will abide the resolutions of the conference.

The most major event by far was kick-started by a Soviet-lead coup d’état in Themata. A hotspot for international conflict, tensions in Themata had been high and areas such as Sunlit had already been in open rebellion for some time. The USR established Themata as a vassal state, and was supported in doing so by her Warsaw allies. The Cross-Straits Treaty Organisation saw this as a breach of the Ardian Entente and acted by issuing a joint ultimatum to Warsaw states demanding primarily their withdrawal from the continent. This ultimatum was flatly rejected by Warsaw nations Thomradia and the USR as both sides mobilised for war.

As the ultimatum expired Caeledia launched an offensive in Themata, as Warsaw retaliated by attacking the CSTO state of Novincia. Warsaw has mirrored CSTO’s Themata strategy, imposing a naval blockade to render their target isolated and vulnerable. With all the major powers at war, this devastating Mundus-wide conflict could tear the region apart and is being watched intently by all.

In more peaceful role-play there have been a flurry of sporting events in Mundus. The IFFA World Cup came to a dramatic close with (redacted PII) winning with a dominant 4-0 victory. The Formula Mundus tournament got underway, with the East Moreland Grand Prix having took place, with (redacted PII) Racing taking the chequered flag.

On a more concerning note, a plague has been spreading rapidly across Coft Aranye. Not a conventional plague as such, but one with symptoms such as impulsive movement and unsatisfiable urges to dance in time to music. Initially chastised by many nations it has since developed into an major international issue to which many nations have put in place measures to combat.

Executive News

Once again, election fever gripped the Independent Order as the elections returned on 28th August. However, these elections were different, for the first time since elections during Beatrice's tenure as Premier, there was only one candidate - (redacted PII). He'd lost the previous two elections, and clearly wanted to achieve victory, though was still left surprised when no other citizens nominated themselves for Premier. This meant that as soon as the incumbent Premier's term concluded, he would take the reins. There was little opposition to this, apart from jokes calling the saga a "tough election". He soon silenced this opposition, as pictured here:

Though the new term has only just started, progress is already being made.

A new Ministry, the Ministry of Constitutional Review, has been established, with Vinage claiming that "it will give the People a much greater say in Orderian legislation." He went on to say "With the voice of the People dictating where the region should go, we can encourage the tradition of populist governance, where the actions and policies of the government truly represent the needs and will of the People of the Order."

The Ministry of Culture has been active over the past few weeks, with the main focus of the Ministry on planning a joint festival with the Land of Kings and Emperors, a region with which the Independent Order has chosen to develop its relations. Once the festival has concluded, the Ministry will be looking to advance two policies: "Cultural Imperialism" and "Orderstroika". The former focuses on advertising notable contributions to the Independent Order's Cultural District and RP sector, particularly on the NS forums to attract people to the Order, whereas the latter seeks to use a mixture of festivals and open events to attract new citizens. It's all part of our plan to take over NS...

The Ministry of Foreign and Imperial Affairs, as mentioned in the above paragraph, has now started to look into developing the Order's relations with other regions, having fully established the Ambassadorial Corps and expanded the Order's portfolio of embassies. One such region is the LKE - a Treaty of Friendship seems likely.

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Integration has established a new Resource Index for newcomers (basically an update for the first Resource Index), which compiles all of the helpful newcomer's guides and other such things into one topic - you'd think they would've thought about doing this earlier. The Ministry has also continued reforms of the Independent Mentors' Corps, and has plans to update the "Things to do" guide, as well as introducing a Newcomers' Curriculum and an awards scheme for Mentors - because who doesn't like shiny things?

The Ministry of Defence has began its revitalisation by reorganising the Independent Militia, the re-inforcement/non-update division of the Order's military, into two teams - Red and Blue. There are also plans to more rigorously advertise both the Independent Militia and the Independent Dragoons. Training exercises are to begin shortly, and we even have pictures of the latest equipment which will be undergoing trials:

The Attorney General's Office, rather fortunately, hasn't had much work to do in terms of criminal cases and such. However, it has been on the lookout for a new Court Clerk (that's pronounced "clark"). That Court Clerk is Major_Thom, who now also holds the portfolio of Minister of Home Affairs and Integration. Additionally, the Premier wants another mock trial to be held so that some fictional person can be berated for no apparent reason, and also to enlarge the pool of citizens with judicial experience.

The Ministry of Accountability (the Minister of which is soon to become an independently-elected portfolio) has also seen a resurgence over the past few weeks, with the AMA scheme being revitalised and plans for the revitalisation of the Anonymous Questions scheme being put in place. This does not bode well for Ministers as this marks a return to being dragged out of their comfy chairs to be asked questions by the riff-raff.

Legislative News

Senate Elections were held in conjunction with the Premier election, with 9 candidates contesting the positions. Neither party achieved a majority in the Senate, although the OPA won more seats. The newly elected Senate consists of the following:

Avakael - Independent
Major_Thom - PDA
CGJ - OPA
DaveIronside - OPA
Aeviternus - Independent
(redacted PII) - PDA
Achkaerin - OPA

The senate has elected Chancellor Emeritus Avakael to the position of speaker.

Since the previous update, the Succession Act and the Seventh Constitutional Amendment were passed through the senate. Due to elections, there hasn’t been much recent activity, and the new Senate is yet to pass a bill, however the Representation of the People Act is soon to be voted on, and the activity of current senators is promising for the future.

Roleplay News

Borlander separatists in East Moreland made a stir in the international community by claiming what is literally a rock in the middle of international waters. And here we were thinking insanity was limited to the regional government. Other nations seemed sluggish in noticing King Kyle and his... rock, but most flatly refused to recognize Borland's independence while even those who did gradually reversed their stances following intense... *ahem* persuasion by the government of East Moreland.

Meanwhile, Achkaerin is hosting the Independent Order's first Winter Olympics, though they aren't quite calling it that. USR propaganda blundered by claiming to have "won" the games against athletes from Rokkenjima despite the fact that Rokkenjima, um, didn't actually send any. Naturally, Rokkejiman media had a field day.

Not long after the propaganda debacle, the USR's Chairman Stalin died from extreme embarrasment natural causes, leading many to speculate that the USR was going to plunge into civil war. However, it didn't, leaving many in the CSTO feeling somewhat disappointed following the appointment of Stalin's successor, Boris Brezhnev. It remains to be seen whether anything will change in the USR.

The Union of Nordic Peoples successfully defeated a radical Odinist revolt and is now planning a conference on the rules of war. Several nations have already confirmed their attendance, raising hopes of successful talks. Additionally, the UNP has begun shopping for new toys seeking aid in rebuilding their military, turning down an offer from the USR to sell large amounts of weapons, instead choosing to accept a similar offer from a corporation based in the Confederacy of Allied Separatists.

Executive News

Today the Independent Order brings you a special Foreign Update (well, it's no different to the other ones, we just said that so you might actually be bothered to read this) - we are going to tell you about not one, but two elections!

The first of these elections was relatively boring. With then-Premier (redacted PII) choosing not to seek re-election due to RL commitments, the stage was set for somebody else for take the helm. Those expecting a close election would've been disappointed, though, as only one candidate put themselves forward. This meant that said candidate, Achkaerin, became Premier and oversaw a rather successful term. Achkaerin did vie for re-election, and one would've been forgiven for thinking Ach was a shoe-in to win it. However, someone else stepped up to put a spanner in the works. That person was Major_Thom. After a closely fought battle, it was Thom who came out on top, winning the election with nine votes compared to Ach's six. This means that he is only the second non-partisan Premier in the region's history (with Grand Chancellor Beatrice being the first non-partisan Premier for a term or so before founding the Progressive Democratic Alliance).

Achkaerin (left) and a festive Major_Thom fought to the death a close election

But enough about those elections, you probably want to hear what our Ministries have been doing.

The Ministry of Culture has been as active as ever, planning various events over the past couple of months, which have been praised by the general populace. For example, the Ministry put together the region's commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the start of WWI. The Ministry of Culture also launched the "RP on Tour" scheme, the premise of which is to bring Orderian RP to the NS forums in the hope of attracting new victims citizens to TIO. Additionally, as you may already know, the Ministry of Culture put together the Order's successful bid to host the 3rd NS World Fair, which you can check out here: http://s15.zetaboards.com/NSWF3/index/ - you could say the Ministry of Culture is definitely doing its bit to increase the Order's street cred.

The Ministry of Foreign and Imperial Affairs, as you may have noticed, has been a little bit inactive as of late as the previous Minister went AWOL during Achkaerin's term. However, Gadshack was called up by Ach to stand-in until the end of the term and got the Ministry back on track. With long-serving member Tytor now guiding the Ministry of Foreign and Imperial Affairs, many expect the Ministry to return to the levels of success it enjoyed soon after the establishment of the Ambassadorial Corps.

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Integration has seen its role diminish somewhat in the past month or so, mostly due to a lack of applications for mentors from newcomers. However, there are no major problems with the Ministry, particularly since the Independent Mentors' Corps was rebooted, so it is expected that nothing will go terribly wrong with it, though some may be hoping for an increase in activity in the Ministry at some point in the future.

And now for the Ministry of Defence. Its activity in the past has fluctuated, and recently it has been no different. Achkaerin drafted in experienced NSer Hobbes, hoping that his NS military gameplay experience would help to get the Ministry going in the right direction. Unfortunately, Hobbes soon had to resign, due to "responsibilities elsewhere". Nevertheless, Sekkanar was then appointed to replace Hobbes and has so far showed an eagerness to kick-start the Ministry of Defence, already performing a Roll Call (a.k.a. clearing out the deadwood) and organising a long-awaited training mission for the Order's current serving troops. Long may this rejuvenation continue!

Last but not least, the Attorney General's Office. As usual, it is probably a good thing that the Attorney General hasn't had much to do - the Order seems to have a good record in regards to keeping vagabonds, brigands and highwaymen out of the region. Plans for a Mock Trial were put in place but appear to have stalled due to a lack of signups. 'Tis a shame, however there just isn't much work for the Attorney General to do, a problem which is not only felt by the Order, but other regions, we're sure. This, of course, begs the question: what is the bloody point?

Stay tuned for more Executive News in our next update!

Legislative News

Two Senate elections have been held since the previous update. The first, at the beginning of October, saw the following 11 Senators elected into office:

Storm Thurmond

Achkaerin
Major_Thom
DaveIronside
Storm Thurmond
Gadshack
Tytor
James_Ed
Tener
Sekkanar

The Senate elected Gadshack as their speaker.

Unfortunately, Storm Thurmond went inactive around hallway through his term, necessitating a by-election which saw MikeRaven elected to fill his spot in the Senate. The only bill presented before the Senate this term, was the eighth Constitutional Amendment, which made Ministers ineligible to serve as the speaker of the Senate.

The second round of elections was held at the end of October, and saw the Seante elected as follows:

Major_Thom

Tytor
Zachpack11
Achkaerin
DaveIronside
Socialist Capitslists
Gadshack

Gadshack was elected speaker, and appointed Achkaerin his deputy, in a new position created by the eighth constitutional amendment. The new Senate is yet to debate or vote on any legislation, but the activity and commitment of the Senators bodes well for the future.

Roleplay News

Oh have we got some roleplay excitement for you!

First, I must begin by saying that our headline tyrannical carbon copy of the Soviet Union, the United Soviet Russia, is on the verge of total economic collapse, falling to the same fate as the real-life regime it was based on. Its pointless wars and attempt to dominate the world with it's warped communist views have all but failed, leaving the nation in shambles and its government powerless against the publically protesting proletarians on its doorstep. This collapse is a big deal for the RP, as it effectively ends a torrent of recent wars, mostly caused by the USR and its non-existent foreign ministry. In other news, Toshikawa has been in trouble lately, with rebels overthrowing the government and starting a war with the entire CSTO and Illumic Command, but surely it will turn out well for the Toshi's right? Anyway, it seems the newly-proclaimed Toshikawan Empire is about to collapse as well. Meanwhile in southern Cotf Aranye, all hell is breaking loose in Aeternum as the country is overthrown by government challengers and the country is forever changing rapidly. Thomradia has gone the way of the USR's other allies, being swallowed by that country's military while Dyfedia, formerly the south coast of Thomradia, makes its rise to stardom. All around, this month's war RPs have brought interesting situations and new characters as well as engaging storylines and plots.
