[Discussion] Actions of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Regarding NationStates
#1

Minister Jay Coop, Minister of Foreign Affairs, The Coalition of the South Pacific

Your decision to issue a stern press release against NationStates' closure of embassies with the South Pacific makes little sense. Considering that this decision in accordance with NationStates' policy to not have in-game embassies with regions tagged with 'Invader' or 'Defender' and that NationStates has also moved to close embassies with Osiris, why have you taken this course of action?

Why is the South Pacific issuing negative press releases against meaningless, irrelevant regions? Will this be our ongoing foreign policy? Since when has it become the practice of the South Pacific Government to concern itself so superficially with the closure of one single UCR that lacks influence on the world stage?

Where's the issue with it? You can probably make a reasonable argument that it wasn't necessary, but it's not like this is in any way a bad thing or detrimental or anything - quite the contrary, it outlines TSP's position on it, something that too many regions are loathe to do these days, unfortunately.

So - no, this isn't some huge important thing, but it's saying something in the first place.

As I said in #lampshade-bar yesterday, I'm not sure if Mikeswill's behavior necessitated/warranted an official response, meaning, I wouldn't be mad or bothered if Jay had elected to not say anything.

That said, nothing in Jay's statement was wrong or unreasonable. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released an accurate and sensible statement pointing out what was, at the time blatant hypocrisy on the form of the NationStates region, and asked a question about timing. There's nothing wrong there.

The way I see it, we either called them out, leading him to close the Osiris embassy, or we simply directed his attention to another lapse in his policy. Though given Mikeswill's history, I don't care to waste time giving him too much benefit of the doubt.

This is an odd framing of the issue. We had an embassy with the region, whether you believe they are relevant or not, it certainly did concern us, especially since they made their own brief statement about it on their own regional message board.

I don't see the issue with the action taken by our government on this.

(It's worth noting that Langburn's legislator access has been removed and they will not be able to see these responses since they're in the private halls)

I signed off on the statement and I stand by that - ultimately it was bound to be noticed by the broader community and since Mikeswill has friends in certain circles, whether we like it or not, we ultimately decided to release the statement, in part to see how he acted. He has a history of hypocritical and self-serving behavior. I admit I was surprised he closed the Osiris embassy too; he is a known raider sympathizer and provided logistical aid to raiders for many years through Ile de France.

In some ways it was a test, in other ways it was drawing a line in the sand, ultimately it matters little.
