World War Z: An Oral History of the South Pacific Zombie War
#1

East Coral, Republic of Kringalia

[This is an account from Katherine Travers, current Governor of South Sea. Mrs Travers owned a carpentry business prior to the Outbreak and was present when the undead first spread out of the country and into the suburbs. She assumed a leadership role during the Reconstruction and was elected Governor in the first election after the Outbreak. Under her governorship South Sea was the first state to declare itself free of the undead and is now the economic powerhouse of Kringalia.]

I suppose that we never think of ourselves as important in the grand scheme of things, until we are suddenly thrust in the arena and found out not only that the circumstances make it necessary for us to do the job, but also that leadership suits us. I am often told that South Sea would never have prospered had I not been there to lead, but we were a prosperous state long before the Outbreak; perhaps not the most developed, but at the very least our people were well educated, had plenty of opportunities and had more than enough resources to make ends meet. What I did was channel the potential that was already there, and make sure that everyone did their part.

Could we talk about the day when the Outbreak was first noticed?

Certainly. I remember that as if it had happened yesterday. It was the middle of the winter, but strangely enough it had been a rather warm day, to the point that I didn’t even need to wear my coat until later in the afternoon. I had been very busy visiting clients and had even met with a potential investor, who was interested in exporting our products to nearby nations in the Western Continent. I had closed the office and was heading to the suburbs, where my sister lived with her family. That night I was going to help them build a tree house for Kevin, my nephew.

Though I hadn’t done actual carpentry in quite a few years, instead focusing on the administrative aspects of the business, I had agreed to help that night to make a tree house for my nephew. Kevin was the youngest in the family, and the only one who shared my passion for carpentry. It was always a pleasure to visit him and talk about my latest projects at the office. I was driving through Coral Street and it was more active than ever, with people going out to the clubs and to celebrate the weekend, even through the police had instituted a curfew earlier that week. Some police cars passed next to me, driving towards downtown, I assumed to control the usual disturbances in the entertainment district. I just kept driving towards the suburbs, though feeling a bit less comfortable and more nervous, for some reason I couldn’t really explain.

When I made that last turn towards the street where my sister lived, I lost my breath. The house was surrounded by police tanks and the armed squadron was getting ready to go inside. I made a full stop, got out of the car and started running towards the house. Just as I saw Kevin inside an ambulance, I felt a set of strong arms holding me back, a police offer that wanted to talk to me. He took me aside and tried to calm me down, explaining that Kevin was fine and that I could talk to him if only I answered a few questions. He asked about my relationship with my sister, what places I had been to recently, any recent diseases and my eating habits. I answered without really thinking about how strange those questions were, mostly focused on getting back to my family.

That was when I first heard it. Just when finished answering the last question, I heard this supernatural growl behind me, coming from the house. I recognised the voice of my sister, but it wasn’t really her. It felt like a wild animal imitating her voice, turning it into something that couldn’t possibly be human. The police offer rushed me inside a car, while more members of the armed squadron entered the house. I heard another of those growls, and then the unmistakable sound of gunshots…

I assume you were held in quarantine afterwards, as per the procedure that the police used at the time?

Yes, that is correct. Kevin and I were both held in quarantine for two days, after which I was told that my sister and her husband had been killed that night. I cried, and then cried a bit more, until I had no more tears to drop. Carol was more than family, she was the person I trusted the most, and she was gone. I was given temporary custody of Kevin, and took him on a long drive, leaving everything behind and going with him to one of the towns in the Bordian Peninsula. I only found out later that my sister and her husband had been bit by a man that appeared out of nowhere. They in turn gave injuries to most members of the armed squadron, but since they didn't know how the disease was transmitted, the Outbreak spread from there and into the nearby states of Kringalia. I was lucky, since I later found out that the officer that questioned me turned into the undead about twenty minutes after letting me go.

[The Governor then received a call and excused herself, saying that we would have to continue the interview at a later time. To this day she has not been informed of the real way in which her sister and the armed squadron got infected.]

The following is a website found to have been written from the point of view of one of the survivors of the Zombie War. The website in question has been completely archived and the posts made by the survivor will be released one, coinciding with the dates and times they were posted.

The Website.

The website was found after someone placed a piece of paper with the website's URL in the inbox of the President, Jasper Henn. It is unknown who the person that placed the paper is.

After the disease had been contained, then-President Angelina Joel had requested that a Commission of Inquiry regarding the incident. The following testimonies are extracted from the report of Federal Commission of Inquiry on the Zombie Disease Outbreak in the South Pacific, chaired by then-Health Minister, Thomas Wilks.

World War Z

No one knows for sure when the Virals hit Farengeto. Some claim we were one of the last ones hit, others like me know we were one of the first. All that's certain was that once Farengeto's airlines and shipping was infected, the world was in doomed.

If I had to guess when, it would be October 19th. A cargo ship had rammed into the harbour of Farengeto City, allegedly out of control. The media had been swarming it that morning. Then it all stopped. Even later when that destroyer opened fire on it there was no word from anyone. I think you can guess how it went from there.

By the time we knew about the virus they had enacted the quarantine and had sent troops to reinforce our borders. At the time they claimed Farengeto had only isolated cases, a claim quickly dropped after it was Farengeto City, not a border town, that was the first to fall to the Viral horde.

It was a few days before an outbreak made it as far south as Vulcer. A force from the southern border attempted to make a stand from the south bank of the Farnella river, just south of Vulcer. Like similar defensives the Battle of Vulcer was a massacre. Even a nuclear strike on the city did little to stall the horde.

They closed in on us from the north and south, and locally reports of an "isolated case" became more frequent. In the final days of October we prepared to evacuate the city. Many fled to the east while those of us who could attempted to flee by boat. I was separated from my family as the Virals overran the harbour. I never saw them again. I ater learned that many of those who had flee inland learned too late that Stinoes too had fallen to the Virals.

The few thousand of us on uninfected ships would meet up with the Flotilla, a fleet of surviving military and civilian ships headed by the remaining government and military leaders, including the Chancellor, calling themselves a "Government-in-exile". While life in the fleet wasn't great even by the standards of the time, it was a safe one free from the constant fear of infection and the military defended us from raiders and Virals.

For a time we survived by raiding what we could from the coasts of the Arebel Sea, giving us enough to get by. When spring came we claimed an island within the sea, siezing it by force from the Virals, which ultimately proved to be our greatest mistake.

Three weeks after we colonized the island a horde emerged from the sea in the middle of the night, catching us off-guard. The colony was overrun and though the Flotilla tried to flee, all but a few ships were infected. Of the thousands of us, less than two hundred escaped. We landed somewhere south of Farengeto City with few supplies. We found the entire coast cratered and lifeless, not even a single living viral.

It was three days before we started coming across intact settlements. Alomg the way we would meet survivors; some friendly, many hostile, a few even joined us. We heard rumours of a free state in the former province of Modia. Between supply shortages, Virals amd other survivors nearly half of us didn't make it. Of the thousands aboard the Flotilla, only 112 managed to make it here to New Modia.

My personal story of World War Z
From President Josh Winters of the Life States
It was just a normal October day, October 19, to be exact. I got up in the morning, showered, dressed in my nice suit for work, put on my nice jacket, and was out the door. My mom bade me goodbye, but I didn't realize that I wouldn't see her for another month. it was a normal day at work, but something didn't quite feel right. I left my office, after a long day of cases and issues. I was tired, and just wanted to go home, no more protests, people begging for change, angry defense ministers to deal with today. Only zombies, but I didn't realize that then. So I got in my car, left my office, and was headed towards my house, and then I saw it, what looked like a corpse, but it was walking along the road. It had blood dripping from it's face and from in between it's teeth. I swerved to avoid it as it crossed the road. Then, I saw more ov them. I hit the gas, to say the least. I was barreling down main street at over 100 kilometers an hour, but the speed limit is only 60 in that area. I reached my house, and by that time the hords were all over. I was afraid to get out of my car so I wouldn't get bitten and infected. So I grabbed my gun from the back seat, and opened fire. I killed all of them, but more were coming. I searched my house, but could not find my mom anywere. I got so scared. I remembered all that I had read and heard about zombies. These had to be zombies, that's the only explanation. I knew what I had to do. I got on my miniature radio, and told the public about everything that was happening. Luckily I knew what was happening, and managed to get most of the population of Life City under quarantine quickly. But some weren't so fortunate. Millions of people died in the nnext week, and the infection spread to other border towns of Life City. The infection spread all the way out to some of the smallest towns in The Life States. I had a small group of people with me, which became bigger as we traveled throughout the country. We found survivers few and far between, and we convinced who we could to join our cause. Finally we went out to sea to try to seak refuge on a small island nation, our ally, Itatium. But they had major infections too. We finally traveled to the only island of The Life States, Deadland, and it was indeed, dead. Not a single living thing, no plants, not even zombies. So, we took refuge with what little supplies we had. We had guns an amo, food, and things to build a shelter, but not very much of any of that. We made a shelter big eough to hold us. We slept peacefully that night, until about 4 AM, hords of zombies swormed the island and caught us off guard. Out of about 50 of us, 20 were made into zombies, 2 were killed. We had lost 22 of our members, and only had 28 left. We pulled it together though, and destroyed the hords of zombies. We also burned their bodies, so they would no longer be a risk to human lives. Whether you guys know it or not, zombies can still turn you into a zombie. It's the bodily fluids that make you zombified. That's why when they bite, you turn into a zombie. It's their saliva and blood from between their teeth. So, when you burn a body, you destroy the virus from the blood and bodily fluids. By the 30th, zombies had overrun most of the life states. Lucky for us, though, a small group of scientists had put themselves under quarantine in their lab, and had developed a cure in the form of bullets and mistles that could be shot at the zombies. They had some robots on hand, so they armed them with these bullets and mistles, rogrammed them to zombies, and sent them out. Slowly, but surely, the zombie population started becoming normal humans again. By Thanksgiving day, there were no more zombies. Actually that's not true, I found one in my house. I shot it. Nothing was left of the zombie population, but my house was one of many millions in the life states, and it wasn't destroyed. It was one of not ery many buildings still standing, though there was significant damage. That was fixed up within a week. I was soon reunited with my mom later that day. She had survived the apocalypse too! There have only been some cases of zombies lately, and that was from a much more recent outbreak in TSP. We've quarantined them, and the situation was completely handled.
