Coup in Turkey
#1

Within the last hour, the Turkish military declared a "successful coup" and the Turkish PM offered a conflicting statement that there is an "attempted coup underway." I'm hesitant to say that I support the military, but I believe that Erdoğan was a threat to his country and the West. He suppressed human rights and went after the Kurds, not to mention his failure to recognize the Armenian Genocide. Any thoughts?

I'm clearly split over this. Although yes, I hate Erdoğan, a military coup is never, ever the answer to return a country to democracy. On the contrary, it makes it drift from democracy even further.

The Turkish military issued the following statement, "Turkish armed forces, in order to reestablish constitutional order, democracy, rights and freedoms, rule of law, safety and security of the Turkish nation and the state, has taken over all government responsibilities of the Republic of Turkey." If the Turkish military carries out a successful coup and keeps true to its word, it should schedule an election sometime this year.

The Turkish Islamist party has condemned the coup. Looks like it's gonna be an Islamist/Secular split, with Islamists backing Erdogan, and Seculars backing the Military.
An eye for an eye just makes the whole world go blind.

A coup is never the answer. No matter how much of a dick Erdoğan is a military coup is not the solution. This has huge implications.

The USAF conducts air campaigns against ISIS from Incirlik Air Base, and this coup will conflict with the U.S. military policy concerning coups. However, it made an exception for Egypt a few years ago.

We really don't who is in control right now and those involved in the coup do not have full control of the military.

Well, there's no going back. The deed has been done. Erdoğan, his Islamist policies, and authoritarianism have deeply polarized the country.

I'm going to challenge your statements by saying if there was a coup in North Korea, throwing Kim Jong-un out of power, the world will have been done a favor.
