[OOC SIGN-IN] TSP 1116 (alt. history fantasy RP)
#1

The year is 1116 and the world sits, unknowing, on a knife-edge.  For nearly a century, magic, once the preserve of court magicians and untamed sorcerers, has been strictly controlled by the Order of Magi.  The Order has maintained their neutrality from all the powers and principalities of the world so that neither rulers nor mad men might twist magic to their will and thus subject Pacifica to a sorcerous reign of terror. Throughout their existence they have taught all the neophytes of the Order that magic is a tool to be used for the good of all people, and thus they have offered their services to all the powers of the world, asking only a small fee from those who could afford it, and other services or goods from those who could not.

Apart from their duties, they keep themselves separate from the world, living in a castle on Archon Island, at the very centre of the known world, but the life of an acolyte of the Order has never been easy and following the charitable intentions of their founder, Archmagus Bela I, has meant that they have usually been only a little better off than impoverished.  The poverty and isolation has led to some discontent within the Order over the years and minor acolyte rebellions have had to be quashed more than once.  This has led, in turn, to a growing sense of entitlement and resentment amongst a portion of the order and to the founding of a secret suborder, those who call themselves the Potestates, the rightful powers.

For the last three decades, the Potestates have plotted and schemed from the shadows of the Order, using the politics of intrigue and assassination as much as their more arcane talents.  With the election of Phytonius, leader of the Potestates, to the position of Archmagus of the Order, their plans are finally coming to fruition and the future of every nation in Pacifica is at stake.

As far as the nations are concerned, however, all is as it always has been. There is war and peace, politics and intrigue, heroes still quest for glory and villains still plot for power. That the very basis by which so many of these things now operate is ready crumble beneath them could not be farther from the minds of the rich and powerful, whilst the poor and subjected have other things to worry about in their meagre lives.

This is both a character and a nation RP. Principally, you will play the leader or leaders of your nation, although you are certainly not restricted from playing more minor characters to help flesh out your story.

As this is an alt. history RP, well be using the TSP map and you may choose to be your current nation, just 900 years earlier. This may fit with your existing history or perhaps the magical nature of the world means things are very different for you. It's your choice.

To begin with, at least, magic will be limited to neutral actions, serving everyone equally. Misuse of the Order (who will remain NPCs) whilst they are still ostensibly serving the region will be considered godmodding. What constitutes misuse in any given situation will be determined by your peers.

Non-human races are allowed, but should be limited to ethnic minorities unless you can make a good argument for them being your nation's primary race. Any social powers and abilities for such races need to be agreed by other players.

There are dragons, ‘cos dragons are always cool, but they are not common and no nation can lay any claim to them at the start of the RP.

The intent is that this will be a story-driven RP for which I will serve as DM as well as RPing my own nation. My plans are very loose, however, and will be flexible to the natural developments of your interactions. If you have any ideas on things you think would be cool to happen, please PM me here or catch me on Discord.

Nations

Nation: The Holy Revaran Kingdom of Erinor
Form of government: Absolute Monarchy.
Location on TSP map (if not your existing nation): Taking up about two-thirds of modern-day Erinor.
Brief description of nation’s current situation and culture: The Kingdom is still young, having been formed less than a decade ago when King Syarkho Qenarid united the warring Erinoran tribes by strength of arms, after his triumphal return from a southern war with an army of foreign mercenaries.  The tensions between the King's Marcorar (warriors, or the lords made from tribal leaders) have been growing ever since and the possibility of wars breaking out between them, or of a full rebellion against the King himself grows ever stronger.
There are three things that keep them in check.  Firstly there is the Revaran temple, which, having always sought a united Erinor, has allied itself most strongly with the King and so any Marcoro who would speak against him risks being seen as a heretic; secondly there is the King’s agreement to pay for the necessary services of the Order out of his own pocket; and, thirdly, there is the risk of war with the neighbouring state of Sereva.

Nation: The Serevan Confederacy
Form of government: Tribal Confederacy
Location on TSP map (if not  your existing nation): The coastal regions of mainland Erinor and the island of Sereva.
Brief description of nation’s current situation and culture: The Serevan Confederacy, whilst not the power it was in the aftermath of the fall of Khera Varsad, is still a thriving nation, independent of, but frequently at war with (and gradually losing territory to) the neighbouring Erinoran tribes.  There has been a tenuous peace since the foundation of the Kingdom of Erinor, during which time the elders of the Serevan tribes have decided to rebuild their forces in preparation for a war to take back their inland cities.

Character

Main Character: Syarkho Qenarid, the first of his name, Aruto Erinead (King of Erinor)
Description:  Quasi-legendary warrior king.
Bio:  Syarkho Qenarid, born Feoldo Ratyanod, was a prince of one of the southern Erinoran tribal nations who, tired of the squabbling Erinorans, left over the mountains with a few noble friends and a small army of peasants, intending to offer their services to whomever they encountered.  He returned decades later with a massive army of foreigners and the first ever horses in the Erinoran basin, and used his learned skills as a warlord in the winters of the south (where he had earned the name Syarkho Qenarid, or the Dragon of Winter) to begin rounding up the Erinoran tribes under his leadership, forming the Kingdom of Erinor.  He has ruled for less than ten years and has not yet fully stabilised his kingdom.

Nation

Name: Karnetian Empire
Type of nation/form of government: Absolute monarchy/empire
Location on TSP map (if not your existing nation): Same as Karnetvor, plus some areas to the south.
Brief description of nation’s current situation and culture: A future superpower, the nascent Empire, led by the Petrović dynasty, has consolidated its rule over present-day Karnetvor, having conquered the last independent kingdom in the area 20 years before. A Christian nation, it has given itself the mission of extending the Christian religion to the neighboring kingdoms, by force if necessary. To that end, it has a well organized, professional army capable of responding to any threat. However, the Empire doesn't have the capacity to administer its entire territory; as such, a number of lords and nobles reign in the Emperor's name at the regional level, some of them waiting for a chance to take his place. Most of the inhabitants are ethnic Karnetians, but there are a number of Austral (English) speakers. For more information, see here.

Main character

Name: Emperor Julien II of Karnetia
Description:
Brief Bio: The first Emperor of Karnetia; he assumed the title (his predecessors used the title of King) after conquering most of present-day Karnetvor twenty years before, and has spent the rest of his reign consolitating his rule and establishing laws to govern the Empire after he is gone. His health has been declining, so he believes that date will come soon. Ambitious even with his increasingly frail health and old age, he still has intentions to expand, and will eliminate anybody who opposes him.

Name: Prince Vladimir Petrović
Description:
Brief bio: Son of Julien II and heir apparent to the throne, he commands the army. As such, he leads the numerous expeditions against the Empire's enemies; however, he distrusts his father, thinking he has become paranoid. He is also against "needless" territorial expansion. However, he is still loyal to his father.

Nation

Name: Ryccian Kingdom
Type of nation/form of government: Feudal Hederitary Absolute Monarchy
Location on TSP map (if not your existing nation): Part of existing location
Brief description of nation’s current situation and culture: Existing since 600 AD, the Ryccian Kingdom has since then conquered kingdoms in its wake. Allies with the Kingdom of Mindonia, the Kingdom of Shalour, the Principality of Xerneas, the Grand Duchy of Nishu and the Kingdom of Morrs, all Ryccian kingdoms except Mindonia, the Ryccian Kingdom is currently waging war against the Tal Principality, a primarily Ukrainian-speaking country.

Like many medieval nations, Ryccia is primarily agricultural, but it has many cities, some considered big in the era.

As a fervant, christian nation, Ryccia has banned all magic, calling it "the tools of the devil". As such, nations who allow and even sponsor magic are immediate enemies of the Kingdom. The Ryccian Kingdom will also soon embark on a christian crusade against magic along with its ally, Morrs, to destroy the Tsardom of Oberus, a kingdom that allows magic, despite having little to no contact with it. However, it will fail.

Ryccian society in this era is ardently christian. The christian calendars are the only ones allowed, any else is heresy, only christian festivities can be celebrated, the Catholic (Western Ryccia) and Orthodox (Eastern Ryccia) Churches hold massive influence in their respective territories, wars are done "in the name of God", secularism is punishable by the death penalty, and so on.

Main character

Name: King Herbert I of the House of Gitilo
Description: The King of Ryccia, he obtained power in 1103 after the War of Bloodworth (1101-1103), taking the throne from the Terrone Dynasty.
Brief Bio: Being born in the then-noble House of Gitilo in the year 1045, the then-noble Herbert of Gitilo joined the Castinia Military Academy, the most prestigious academy for nobility, at the age of 22. Graduating from the academy 3 years later, he got a job as a Captain of the Ryccian Royal Army, in which he would lead a successful campaign in the french-speaking Kingdom of Tigon. Being the most efficient commander of the invasion, he was honoured with the title of General and Duke of Kiann, a province rich in grain. He then led the conquest of the Moonlight Empire, in the Moonlight War (1095-1100), in which he and his forces decimated the enemy.

Greedy for power, and because the ruling monarch was purging the feudal nobility, Herbert of Gitilo rallied his armies in the military, and, along with many nobles, waged a two-year war against the Terrone Dynasty. After capturing Castinia, the capital, in late 1103, the Terrone forces surrendered, making him the ruler of the Ryccian Kingdom.

In the present day, Herbert I of the House of Gitilo has been the monarch of Ryccia for over 13 years, and his rule never seems to end.

Nation

Name: Empire of Sei-Tenna
Type of nation (form of government): Dual Monarchical Empire

Location on TSP map (if not your existing nation): The Empire will be located in plot 062.

Brief description of nation’s current situation and culture:

Main character(s)

Name:  King Tayal

Brief Bio:  The second king of the post-unification empire, King Tayal is an aging man who many see as the central figure holding the empire together.  Throughout his reign he has pursued policies to both bring the empire more into the international community and to make the two kingdoms of the empire more dependent upon each other in order to encourage stability.  Through his efforts, he has made a civil war less likely, but has thus far failed to heal the wounds of the past.  Like all Tenna kings, he is seen as semi-divine by his people and is a practicing shaman within the strictures of the Order.

Name: Advisor Jia

Brief Bio:  Jia zai’she came into the service of the royal court from the humble background as the son of a stone smith through his exemplary performance on his civil service exams.  While in the service of the old king, he quickly came to hold the most power in the court, and was given the title of designated regent.  Soon after this appointment, the old king died with only his twelve year old daughter to succeed him, thus making Advisor Jia the most powerful man in the kingdom and the power behind the throne.

How do the Yi steal sight? And how'd you get away with summoning demons and spirits when magic is strictly controlled by the order.

Through their inherent magical ability they are able to do this when they come into physical contact with whatever they are stealing sight from.  This is also how the bond is created.  It is has to be an active attempt, it does not happen at random.  Most people are safe from having their sight stolen given that stealing a human's sight (except under certain circumstances) will result in execution.

The summoning magic used by the Tenna kings under this system would be limited only to use in certain ceremonies and other events where it is required by tradition, they cannot just summon whatever they want willy-nilly.  They would also probably be required to study under the Order like the rest of the religious caste while still princes.  In other words, outside of ceremonial functions or the explicit permission of the Order, the kings have ceased the use of their magic.
