Promoting the SPSF
#1

I was talking to Crimson earlier and he reiterated what the RMB poll has been saying: the SPSF needs a higher profile.

I'm wondering if we can get some communication between RA -- especially the Southern Journal staff -- and the SPSF?

Admittedly, I'm not fully up-to-date on our organization on either ... but Feir, Henn -- do we think we can work something out?

Oh yes.

We can work something out indeed.

Please keep in mind that I never intended for the Southern Journal to be a newspaper following a government line or promoting government activities. In that sense, the Journal would not be an appropriate outlet to increase SPSF visibility, since publishing activity geared towards that would violate its editorial independence.

That is not to say that the Communications Bureau cannot coordinate with the SPSF, since some steps could definitely be taken, but the Journal is not ideal for that.

There's a way to embed journalists in the coverage of a news story without making it propaganda. That said, if we find this inappropriate, perhaps the Communications Bureau is a better situation.

It might also be prudent is discuss having someone post updates to our friends and allies to keep them abreast of our regional affairs.

What I meant to say was that it would be counterproductive to use the Journal as an outlet for SPSF reporting if our mindset is to highlight its profile. That is a perfectly legitimate objective, but the Journal was envisioned as an autonomous news source whose reporting was not to be guided by government priorities. In that sense, we would not want it to report about the SPSF simply because it might be in the interests of the government to have more reporting about it.

To clarify, the Southern Journal is part of the Communications Bureau. Though I said that the Journal would not be adequate, the Bureau has other projects that would be more fit for our objective, and could certainly develop other projects along that line. We could consider something as simple as the Bureau assessing the SPSF on communication and image, and going all the way to post-mission live discussions on IRC.

On the latter, I'm thinking of something like Talking Bad or Talking Dead. We could also do my newsletter idea, for distribution to the RMB and Forum communities, like I told Henn and posted in the review thread. So yes, while the Journal would not be adequate for constant reporting, the Bureau could definitely accommodate something.

That sounds like the Foreign Update which must be done by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as the Charter mandates.

I'll be honest -- I'm not really interested in getting into the nitty gritty of which aspects of the Ministry of Regional Affairs does what. I started this thread with the pure intention of initiating conversation between the departments, not attempting to say how this should work. Feir, Kris, Henn -- if ya'll could connect in some way, that would be awesome.

Regarding the Foreign Updates, we haven't done updates in several months now. While it *technically* falls under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs given that the ministry has no interest in conducting such, I don't see how it would be inappropriate to reassign this.

Moreover, it would be less an update on the region and more advertisements. If we are creating some form of communication anyway, including a process to pass the info onto our allies would seem like a simple extension.

I really don't mind getting in touch with Henn and writing an update. I'm a little backlogged right now with some IRL stuff; but I have a long weekend ahead of me and can get something out by Monday for the update. I really don't mind Smile
