AREBEL SEA BLOCKADED: FARENGETO ON THE BRINK OF WAR?

Atharian destroyer patrolling the blockade line

Tensions between Farengeto and the nearby nation of Athary boiled over today as Athary and Iosal declared a blockade of Farengeto. This latest development comes after Athary's failed embargo of Farengeto last month, aiming to fight alleged "economic imperialism".

The blockade aims to prevent any ships bound to or from Farengeto from crossing the parallel shown below, cutting mainland Farengeto's naval access to the South Pacific Ocean. Large numbers of Atharian and Iosalian ships have already been reported patrolling the blockade line.

Current state of the blockade

While the blockade does not officially cover aerial access, several nations have already redirected flights around the blockade zone and the blockading nation following reports of Iosalian military aircraft patrols. Witnesses report a large-scale mobilization of the Farengeto Navy, but while many ships bound for the blockade line have been recalled a few seem unfazed by these recent developments.

Both sides have sought international support for their cause, and while no with Athary threatening to fully blockade the sea should any nations assist Farengeto. Experts remain uncertain whether this may still be resolved peacefully, with some arguing war between the long-time rivals may be inevitable.

Gimmal, Zarisa, and The Solar System Scope, the other nations within the blockade zone, have not yet released statements regarding the issue.

CONSERVATIVE LEADER KILLED IN CAR ACCIDENT

Emergency responders on the scene

Tragedy rocked the Conservative party today after party leader Ralph Jeanes was killed in a tragic car accident. At approximately 1:57am Jeanes' car ran a red light, where another vehicle collided into the driver's side of his vehicle. Jeanes was killed instantly while the other driver, whose name has not been released, died in the hospital this morning. A memorial is expected to be held later this week.

With the final party debate set to occur this week, the conservative party is scrambling to find an interim leader. Political analysts are expecting MP Murphy Lévêque to take the leadership until a party convention can be held. While controversial his pragmatic and progressive policies have gained him a strong popularity following the war and unrest that has swept the South Pacific.

ORDER RESTORED TO FARENGETO: END OF THE MAY CRISIS

Military parade in Farengeto City celebrating an end to the conflict

Farengeto has declared an end to the violence that has gripped the nation over the past month following intervention by the Forces Armées Farengeto (FAF).

The violence erupted earlier this month following the May 6th coup in Aspey by the terrorist organization Cephio Liberation Front (CLF). The coup sparked a series of rebel attacks across the Cephio Islands and the Farengeto mainland that have killed more than three thousand, including 312 civilians during a bombing in Modia.

Controversy over the future of the Cephio Islands and the inaction of the Larue government resulted in a vote of no confidence, causing the Liberal minority to prorouge Parliament. Protests on the street escalated into violence, and there are reports of armed partisian clashes occurring across the nation.

Paratroopers retook the government buildings of Aspey on June 2, capturing CLF leaders and scoring a decisive victory for Farengeto. Forces under the command of General Maximilien Rey arrested more than a dozen members of Parliament overnight on charges of treason, citing multiple plots including a planned communist coup by pro-SSU radicals. Interim Conservative leader Murphy Lévêque has supported the move, claiming "an end to the Second Farengeto Republic" and the start of a "new era of stronger Farengeto government". Representatives from the Forces Armées Farengeto have declared their support for the drafting of a new constitution and called for an end to the conflict.

FARENGETO ENTERS THE NUCLEAR AGE

The Nuclear Test

Farengeto successfully conducted its first nuclear weapons test today, the first in a series of initiatives to revitalize Farengeto's military power. The test is a culmination of years of efforts started under the Averill government. While the program was nearly scrapped by President Larue, the project continued.

Both General Rey and Acting President Lévêque have supported the test, stating the need for increased militarization amd the nuckear deterrent in the face of rising instability across the South Pacific in recent years.

In a statement today Rey stated "We face a global threat in to international stability and security. These tyrants threaten our people and our society. They know no peace, no diplomacy, only bloodshed! No longer will Farengeto be a third rate power, content to stand aside! No longer will Farengeto tolerate these transgressions! No longer shall we be threatened by rogue states! No longer! For today, Farengeto fights back!"

Farengeto has begun production of its warheads and aims to have a full arsenal by the end of the year.

THE CONSPIRACY DEEPENS: DOZENS ARRESTED

Military Police arresting Ryccian hackers

Another wave of arrests has been made in connection to plots against the former Second Republic.

Numerous individuals, including several Liberal members of Parliament, have been arrested in connection to the death of former Conservative leader Ralph Jeanes, including following the discovery of evidence tying the accident to a hijacking of both vehicles by hackers. The Farengeto Intelligence and Security Agency (FISA) report calls the collision an "assassination", attempting to eliminate the popular conservative leader and throw the party into chaos prior to elections. Former President Percy Larue has not yet been charged, however he has fled the country to an unknown location. The unnamed hacker is a socialist Ryccian living in Farengeto under a false name, they are currently wanted in Ryccia.

Further arrests have been made in connection to a planned socialist coup. The arrests include multiple members of the Democratic Party and the Worker's Party, who attempted to use last month's unrest to incite a socialist rebellion.

All three Members of Parliament from the Cephio Party have also now been arrested for their connections to the Cephio Liberation Front.

PERSPECTIVES: THE PRESIDENT, THE GENERAL, AND THE PRIME MINISTER, PART 1

Farengeto was thrown into a period of crisis on June 7 as General Rey controversially declared an end to the Second Farengeto Republic. As international eyes turned elsewhere Farengeto and its new "Transitional Government" stayed under the radar. Few updates came from the country and when they did multiple accounts often emerged, many telling drastically different tales.

Throughout the crisis three names would come to dominate the headlines:
  • Percy Larue would become leader of the Liberal party in 2008, and under his leadership would be elected President to a majority government on the 2011 elections. He fought to hold the country together in the face of the international crises of the modern age, but his failure to commit a definitive reaction to the CLF rebellion escalated the crisis to a national scale. Faced with a Vote of No Confidence, he prorogued Parliament to prevent it. After the dissolution of the Second Republic he fled the country, and is now hiding in an undisclosed location.
  • Enrolling in the Armed Forces in 1979, Maximilien Rey took command of the military in 2012. He would enter the public spotlight in May, issuing direct military action in the Cephio Islands against the orders of President Larue. After retaking the islands in early June he returned to the capital, where he dissolved the Larue government and the Second Republic. He has served as de facto Head of State for the Transitional Government and with the arrest of PM Lévêque now serves as the sole leader of the Farengeto government. His "dictatorial and militaristic" leadership has drawn international controversy.
  • Murphy Lévêque began his career in the Farengeto Intelligence and Security Service (FISS), serving as its director from 2005 until 2010. He left the Service later that year to enter politics and became an MP for the Conservatives in 2011. Following the death (and alleged murder) of Ralph Jeanes, he became interim leader of the party. With the dissolution of the Second Republic and the numerous MP arrests, Lévêque's support would lead to him being appointed to the newly created position of Prime Minister until his arrest during the Black Sunday incident on August 18th. Lévêque now stands accused of orchestrating the whole crisis and its resulting aftermath.

In this exclusive four-part special we sat down with each of these leaders, and listened to their sides of the Farengeto Crisis. With no independent verification of these claims we warn readers to approach this with an open mind for any one of these tales may be correct, or perhaps none of them are. Stay tuned for our first interview with President-in-exile Percy Larue in the next edition of Perspectives: The President, the General and the Prime Minister.

PERSPECTIVES: THE PRESIDENT, THE GENERAL, AND THE PRIME MINISTER, PART 1

President-in-exile Percy Larue, as he currently stylizes himself, has been a polarizing figure. Even before the Crisis his approval ratings were mixed, and they would decline rapidly in the days leading up to the coup. In recent weeks he has seen a resurgence amidst Rey's "tyrannical" governance, with even some of his critics considering him a "lesser of three evils", despite a lack of appearances since his flight from Farengeto nearly three months ago.

It would be not me but Larue himself that reached out to me for this interview, from his hidden refuge. When asked about his whereabouts and whether he planned to return to Farengeto he declined to answer.

While the start of the crisis is typically considered to be May 5th, Larue explained the true start was April 20th. "There was a lot of confusion after Jeanes died. With the campaign only a couple weeks away, it threw the party into chaos. But by the end of the week it was almost as if someone flipped a switch in Parliament. Half the Conservative party suddenly embraced nationalism, the Cephio representatives rushed home, and many members of both my party and the Democrats - the majority of them now imprisoned - started acting strangely. The then minor Lévêque suddenly became the a frontrunner for the Conservative leadership, his radical stance foreshadowing what was to come. It was then that I received the first letter." He shared a series of anonymous threatening letters he reportedly received at the time with me. Though he was allegedly told there was no danger, he continued to receive then despite claiming to have increased security. They started as simple threats, but as the May Crisis started so did the demands.

"I was told not to intervene, to let the crisis play out on its own. Eventually I almost did; I don't think it's a coincidence the next day was the Modia City bombing." The next letter had a peculiar demand: to dissolve Parliament the next day. The motivations would be made clear the next day, as members of both the government and opposition declared a vote of no confidence. "All hell broke loose that day. Violence erupted in the streets and then Rey went rogue. I had been blackmailed into my own demise. By June 7th it was over for me and for our democracy, replaced by tyranny and fascism. My paranoid escape plan would quickly pay off."

Larue claims that many of the purported "insurgent" leaders were likely in the same situation as him, apparently threatened by Rey and Lévêque. He alleges the arrests of Members of Parliament were systematic attempts to eliminate both opposition to "the new regime" and dissidents within in it. "Throughout his career Rey was always power-hungry; the 'transitional parliament' was always a means to an end, a tool he could abuse in his quest for absolute control. It was inevitable he and Lévêque would turn on each other." He showed supposed inconsistencies and errors in "Black Sunday" casualty figures, and claimed that the alleged terrorists were military forces conducting a false flag operation with the main firefights conducted using blank rounds.

Whether his narrative is the truth or propaganda, I cannot say for certain. But his claim stands in stark contrast to the official narrative presented by the Transitional Government.

ELECTION POLLS: NOVEMBER 23RD

With the launch of their campaign platform the Conservative had made further gains in the polls, closing the gap between the Conservatives and Liberals.

The Cephio Bloc has been losing support, dropping by 7 percent in the Cephio Islands since the start of the campaign, though their seat projections remain unchanged with a projected 3 seats if an election were to be held today.

The Democratic party has seen fluctuations in the polls, but continues to hold around 20% in the polls.

PRIME MINISTER TATHAM SWORN IN

Final results of the January 2nd Parliamentary election

In this morning's historic ceremony President Maximillien Rey met with Christopher Tatham to officially swear him in as Prime Minister. The momentous occasion marked the official start of operations for the new Farengeto Third Republic. The event was celebrated across the nation, and following the swearing in President Rey and the new Executive lead a parade through the capital.

Tatham faces an tough challenges as the newly formed Parliament prepares to begin its sessions. The minority Liberal government continues to hold only a single seat lead over the Conservatives, and with the Liberals still divided and fractured the Prime Minister may face intense opposition from both inside and outside his party in coming months. FIN's political analyst fear these early days of the Third Republic could be fraught with instability.

In his speech this week President Rey promised an increased response to the growing global threats. The General vowed to increased Farengeto's military and security capabilities, and promised to take a direct and forceful response towards any threat to Farengeto. With the growing issues of military aggression, terrorism and nuclear war an increasing number of Farengeto believe the nation to have been underprepared under the Second Republic. In a recent FIN survey 83% of respondents believe Farengeto's military to be underfunded, while 74% believe there to be a risk of a terrorist attack in Farengeto.
