As in to get one or to live with them? Getting one is an interesting experience, one that's never quite what anyone expects their first time. It isn't agonisingly painful or anything like that, I personally really enjoy the experience. I love working with the artists to get a really cool idea and usually just chat with them about stuff when I'm getting tattooed. They're always really interesting people with some really great stories which really helps the time go by and take your mind off the bit of pain of actually getting tattooed but the sensation is more like being scratched than stabbed or anything else your mind jumps too when you think about the needle part. If you actually look at the equipment it's very, very fine, much smaller than the hypodermic needles used by doctors and they're actually not going below the very first few layers of skin so they're not penetrating deeply. I can't deny, especially after my last session, that some areas hurt more than others. I had my whole upper arm tattooed in 7 hours and had no problems at all but I'm currently working on a very large piece and so far I've had 4 hours for it on my side/stomach/rib area and had to clench my teeth through some bits. It got pretty sharp after a while but determination drives me on. The artist is fantastic and I love his vision for the finished piece, it's better than I could have ever imagined! Really that's why I do it, I love being a living canvas. Paper is flat and boring, good tattoos work with the shape of the body, following the natural lines and tell a story about the wearer. I just absolutely adore them.
Living with them can be interesting, I've kept mine in places I can cover but there is still definitely a difference in how people treat me based on if they're on display or not even though I have nothing offensive.
