I think that that is one of the great mysteries of the universe, and perhaps we'll never know until we meet God in person, but until then, there's no reason not to speculate.

Sometimes, the wisest thing to know is that you know nothing. Ultimately, we must rely on faith if we are to believe in the Supernatural. That is after all why we have holy books and religions in the first place, to encourage our faith, and focus on the meaning in a seemingly chaotic universe.

I would, in all appropriate seriousness, point you fine minded individuals to that old chestnut.
Everything we are and perceive is perceptually filtered, thus how can we be said to know anything?
Just because a majority of people agree on what they assume is the same thing and call it a 'fact', does not make it cosmically anything, except palatable.
I would argue a differing viewpoint on the original need for religion however.
